View Full Version : 12' Schiada Father / Son Project

This has been sitting out back of Schiada underneath a tarp for a few years.. Lee was going to build it for himself, but he has so much going on he just doesn't have the time to do it. I.E. it sitting there for a few years. ;) So with a little coaxing he finally caved in and sold it to me.
We bought the boat sight unseen, just becuase 12'ers are EXTREMELY rare (point in fact I think they only built 3 or 4 of them?) so getting a new unrigged hull is a gem in itself.
Andy01 went by Schiada when they pulled the tarp off of it and took some pics for me. :)
This is one of 2 "mini" Schiada's that I'll be building. The 2nd one is currently at Dana boats being prepared to regel coat it. That thread will be up over the weekend sometime I expect. :)

They cleaned the boat up a little bit to prepare to it to goto Long Beach, where the boat will be wetsanded and buffed (it never was, it was just popped out of the mold and stored from what I understand) and reconditioned a bit, to make sure it's a "new" Schiada.. ;)
Currently the boat is in Long Beach, I haven't seen it since these pics were taken. After it's buffed and ready to go, we'll start the build process, on the boat.. I expect it will take a year to 2 years before it hits water..

The gel looks good. Will this be the surface drive boat? Are you going to change the OB section of the deck?
Cav plates too?:thumbsup

I might change the OB section of the deck.. That is already being done on the 10'er to make it a "flat deck" ;)
My dad wants to do a surface drive. I want to do an Outboard.
Today's argument was "CG" of the boat.. He is opposed to sticking the fuel tank in the front of it because the "CG" changes as the fuel empties..
He wants a belly tank (not an option) or saddle tanks in the center of the boat.
The only thing I know for certain at this point, is we'll be bypassing the little "compartment" behind the seat, and pushing the seat all the way back, with an extended steering column (ski race style), and manual cav plates / foot throttle etc..
After it's all cleaned up we'll take a drive up to Schiada to see it in person and measure somethings and decide which route to take. My bank roll can't keep up with his though, so this will be a long process.

You could always do twin surface drives or twin jets and couple them together to a Hayabusa motor located up under the deck. :skull Imagine a 12' boat with 185h.p. in it. :D

Dave can you clarify for me that there was a 10`er and now there`s a 12`er. When did Lee make the mold for this one. Hard to tell from the pics that if in fact this is a true 12`er that would be pretty, a better proportioned boat I think.

Very cool...I like the twin option...lots of twin jets sitting out there from broken down Sea Doo boats...and you could go with some cool motorcycle motors to get some power out of them...also a twin jet would be a blast for turning and navigating...
Heck just searched and found this...you could have your engine/drives for 2800 and sell the hull for $1000...

Is seadoo making a single engine twin jet deal? Or was this 2 engines 2 jets?
Truthfully I think just a normal Sea Doo jet with some HP behind it would do the job.. That is if I liked Jetboats. :D

The Sea Doo's are usually twin engine twin jet boats. Most of them have built in place diverters on the jets too. :) If it were me, I would put a street bike engine in it with twin jets coupled together. :)

Nebb, I like that motor!
RD
the one we ran has dry stack pipes coming right off the head. They look like big mega phones. It was the coolest engine I've ever had my hands on.
I used to play around with small boats a lot. GW Invaders were the hot deal where I lived. But I had a home built lil 8' "Class A" jobbie with a 15 HP Johnny. Then I scored a 1950 Mark 10 merc for it (i cleaned the bottom of a very nasty pontoon in trade). It ran way faster with that old 10 then it ever did with the newer 15.
I loved that old Mark 10 and wish I still had if for sure.
Here is a sweet Mark 10 on youtube. scootin right along for 2 adults in the boat too. No way would a new 10hp (9.8) push it that fast. Of course I ditched the cover on mine for a sleaker / racier look. lol

The difference between the 10 and 12' is in the cockpit lenght.
aRDy, if you put a jet in one of those things, you are a fool.
Not just the cockpit length. The 12'er is I think 4 inches wider as well, which would make it a different boat all together?

The odds are 99.9% it's a 10'er.. They only built 4 12'ers.. and I know where 3 of them are. Not saying it's impossible, just very improbable.

So I was the owner of the 1st 12' Schiada..... you could even say that without me there might not be a 12' Schiada
Lee actually built the 12' mold from our 10 footer that I had all but torn the bottom off of while driving it (just a little hard maybe??) on Havasu!!
The 10' boat was a huge amount of fun (especially 20 years ago before the invasion of the huge boats on Havasu) but one too many "Mega Air" flights finally took it's toll, One day it was sitting in the water tied up at the back of our house in Havasu Palms.....after a little rough water fun and found that the last 3' of the outer hull was well...............missing :swear
So................I took it to Lee and after the insurance settlement I want back up there (when he was still in Gardena) and saw for the first time a new 12' mold made from the remnants of my by then totaled 10 footer which had been "Sacrificed" for a good cause!!
Well the challenge was on.......Lee told me that he was going to lay this one up extra tough and he said "There is no way you are going to break this one":skull
So we put everything on it......it twas freaking awesome (in the day), had very nice interior with a hatch behind the seat, ski pole, built in fuel talk (that was a great foot rest BTW), all the cool blue anodized hardware with Speedo, Tach, Fuel Gage and an engine instrument or 2 and even the then brand new "Pop up Cleats".....can't remember all the goodies.
On the back was a Tohatsu 40HP motor with electric trim on a custom "Dana" bracket....also Blue anodized. Needless to say it was very fun I even have pictures somewhere (pre digital cameras) showing it hanging on the prop with everything out of the water.....including the Skeg!!
The challenge was on and remember Lee said "There's no way you are going to break this one"........so I was invincible in that little guy....until I broke it:D........we had a bit of an issue with the stringer delaminating a bit but Lee was awesome and took care of it, laying it up even more stout and again the challenge was on and back to Havasu we went:champagne:
Well I was younger then and managed to do a little more damage and by now Lee was a little less confident that "there was no way you are going to break this one"....at least ME breaking it:rolleyes:
Lee was amazing throughout the whole thing and we eventually worked a deal on a 21RC that I NEVER Broke :rotflmao:
As a matter of fact my boat was in his brochure for a number of years we actually showed it as a very cool package hooked up to the GMC Typhoon that I used to pull it back and forth to the River ......that was cool!
So...........while Lee was certainly the Father of the 12 footer I DO feel responsible for making the whole thing possible:D:D:D

Schiada only built 4 of them. Lee has one, I have one, the flyingvees have one and the other I have no idea where it is. Probably be a 75-90 hp motor.
Lynch, that is Alexis motor in the background.
Linder, if it wasn't a brand new never been rigged hull I'd gel it.. I will do the custom glass work (flat deck the back) and some gel work but not regel the whole boat. Now that it's washed I'm debating on whether I even want to change the lift blue on it. I originally wanted to change that to greys.

I assume the 12 is a stretched 10.
Is it just an additional 2 feet added to the stern both hull and deck or does it involve a new mold, stretched bow section etc..???

I assume the 12 is a stretched 10.
Is it just an additional 2 feet added to the stern both hull and deck or does it involve a new mold, stretched bow section etc..???I can tell you EXACTLY what it is......it is exactly the 10' front end of the boat with 2' added to the back in a stretch and extension of the "V".
How would I know this with such certainty you might ask??? Because I was singularly responsible for the 12'er coming into existence.
In September of 1991 after a long day of jumping wakes in my 10' Schiada with a 30 horse OB as I did on a regular basis.....this was before the days when you had to stay at least 50' behind a boat under way.
I came down the stairs to get in the boat and do some more of the same to see that is was sitting pretty low in the water.....Hmmmm I wonder what's going on here:headscratch:....the back of the boat was full of water....Hmmmm. I looked down and saw some fiberglass strands on the back of the boat and holy crap when I reached under there was no bottom......at least the outside hull:eek:. I jumped in, managed to get it started and drove it (Plowed is more like it) to the boat ramp around the other side of the place, managed to get it on the trailer and found that the back 16 - 18" of the hull was freaking gone.....it must have cracked (can't imagine how that happened) and under pressure was "Hydraulic-ed" right off the boat.
So..........Insurance settlement in hand I took the boat to Lee (in Gardena at the time) and said can you fix it???? he said let me see what I can do.......fast forward a month or so and he said come by.....I got something to show you.....when I got there he had taken my 10'er and used it make a mold of what was to become the 12'er....we rigged it with a Tohatsu 40hp, with electric trim, Dana Bracket, internal fuel tank and a full set of gauges.....and the 12'er was born!!
Lee and I had a chance to talk about this at this year's DS Street Fair, he told me that he think they made about 10 of them over the years....I thought I heard 4 once but Lee said 10.
Wish I had that boat today.......it is still running according to RD and it belongs to his neighbor in Parker.......I'd like to get a look at it again some day....that was a very cool boat in it's day!

Cool story. As of a year and a half ago, the number was still at 4 when I talked to Lee. Saw pictures of another 1 that they recently built a few months ago on RDP, all red I believe. So maybe Lee has built 6 recently? If so, I'd love to see some pics. I tried to get just a bare hull 12'er, it aint cheap! Still hoping to get one, as of a year and a half ago when Lee and I talked, we knew where all 4 were. Hopefully one pops up for sale.

Is it Yellow and White ?
No actually it was white (Base) with Blues and Gray Fades in the Gel with a matching upholstry and Blue Anodized Bezels, Dana Bracket for the engine and pop-up cleat trim. It had lights as well.
