What is everyone doing? What works?

I'm just cutting back on portions, eating way lighter and going to the gym 3-5 times per week.

I just started this yesterday, but that's my game plan so far. We are doing a biggest loser here at work.

I started at 206 and would love to be under 170

I have had great success by just cutting down on carbs. Not eliminating them, but reducing the amount I eat per day. I also only have carbs for breakfast. Also, I typically eat 5-6 small portions throughout the day. Couple that with a good exercise program and I have done well. :)

That's exactly what I did to lose all 31lbs last year. I needed the breakfast carbs just to make it through the day. Slightly less carbs for lunch and almost nothing for dinner. I made sure to eat hours before going to sleep also.

That is exactly what I am doing. :) So far down 18lbs and loosing more by the day. My only problem is that I crave carbs later in the day. Just have to wrap my head around it that I can't have them. :o I love breads and items with a lot of carbs, but that is not in the diet plans. Once I hit my goal weight of 170, I will start caving in a little more and cheating. Hopefully by that point in time, my metabolism will be able to support the added load. :thumbsup

Just be careful with that thought process. I assumed the same when we ended the last contest. DS was about 3 weeks after we were done and I gained about 6 lbs. Still ate healthy I just relaxed a little.

I think I will be just fine as long as I maintain my gym routine. 45 min of swimming 3-4x per week should hopefully burn it off. :)

I'm not in this competition but I think through my own situation I can possibly provide some good advice.

You don't have to completely cut the carbs, if I have carbs I do it for breakfast or lunch, never for dinner. Don't eat anything 2hours prior to going to bed. Green vegggies are freebies, you can eat all that you want, corn and carrots are not as good for you on a diet as you would think. Fruits are loaded with sugar, but, it is a good natural sugar, if you can cut out the snicker bars and oreos and pick up an apple or some grapes you will be better off. Cut back on the amount of alcohol you put in your body, it is empty calories and most of it is loaded with Sugar, Miller Lite and Michelob Ultra are the only beers that are accepted on a low carb diet, if you drink hard liquor I suggest Bacardi and Diet with a squeeze of Lime. Also, to help speed up your metabolism, eat 6 times a day, small meals this is the absolute key, IMO.

Get active, whether you are hitting the gym or walking on the beach, you need to get that heart pumping, I hit the gym 5 days a week when I am in town, evry time I am there I do a minimum of 20 minutes of cardio, I have one day a week that is all cardio, an hour at least, 30 minutes on the treadmill and 30 minutes on the eliptical.

The biggest thing for me was educating myself, the internet is a great place to read up on what to put in your body, I actually found most of my info on the ADA (American Diabetes Assoc) website, take the time to read the stuff that is out there...

good stuff there barrymac. the only thing i would change is eating before bed. i highly recommend some type of casein. either a shake or some cottage cheese. also, the only carbs i have with dinner are veggies or a little bit of brown rice or quinoa. veggies are unlimited unless they are drenched with cheese or something like that. aside from that, i agree.:thumbsup

I agree with the shake or other protien before bed for us, sounds like you are working out and aren't really trying to lose weight, sounds like we are maintaining and building muscle? For these peeps they are in weight loss mode and they shouldn't consume anything prior to bedtime. Just the findings in my research.

well, i am in the process of trying to burn off some weight but at the same time build up my frame a little better. that is one of the reasons why i didn't get into the contest. my weight loss # would have been significantly less than someone who is just trying to lose as much as possible.

when i am in a bulking or cutting phase, i still consume some casein before bed to try and preserve my muscle. it has always worked for me, but i know that it doesn't work for everybody.:beer

lean type of meat (chicken breast, turkey breast, pork tenderloin, etc. but go easy on the seasonings) and as many veggies as you want. also, you can have a side salad with a little bit of dressing.

I do, but it has been a while since I have done peddle power. ;) Normally everything that I ride with two wheels has a motor attached.

Thats cool. It has been a while since i have ridden Whiting. Never rode any of the other places. My family has a bunch of property out in Williams Canyon (between Silverado & Modjeska). I used to ride out there all the time. Ride the fire trails into Silverado, Modjeska, Trabucco, etc... It has probably been 3-4 years since I have gotten on a mountain bike. :(

It's never too late to start up again. I took about 12 years off. It took me about 3-4 rides to clean mustard hill again at Whiting. The first time I thought I was going to vomit my sack out my eyeballs.

If you have any time available in the afternoons we are starting to hit up the day light savings rides starting next week. If you're interested, we're going to ride something somewhere this weekend.

you have plateaued!

you need to change something, like i told jim, switch up your routine. your body can get adapted real easily to the same routine. although you have a great job not cheating, it is good to do it once a week or once every other week just to confuse your body and it's metabolism.

with that said, good job ... keep it up:beer

I pretty much do change things up constantly. :( I get bored doing the same thing over and over. :( For workouts, I rotate between free weights & machines. For Cardio, I always change it up. Spin classes, swimming, eliptical machines, etc...

I really don't know what to change up on the diet. :hmm Could cut carbs out completely, but if I do, I get lathargic. Don't want to go adding a bunch of carbs because I know that I blow up when I eat too much.

It just gets frustrating. I have always said that my goal is to be about 185lbs, but be solid. I can tell I am getting there, but still want to loose the buddah.

one thing to try is to throw in a higher carb day once every five days. your body will think everythings back to normal. then you go back onto your diet and it will turn to fat storages for energy. it might be worth a shot.

how is the swimming working for you? the gym i go to doesn't have a pool, but i have been wanting to swim. it might be easier on the joints.

I might just try the higher carb thing every couple of days and see how it goes.

I love swimming. I think that it is the best total body workout. The LA Fitness I go to has a heated pool so I go swimming when I am done lifting. Good way to cool down the muscles too.

By far the best total body work out is Water Polo. Played back in high school and was 10x more physically challenging than football. If I played right now, I would be dead! Extreme cardio and your legs are on fire when you get out.

Trust me, eating is not the problem. I eat between 6-7x per day. Last thing that I am doing is starving myself. I just try to eat the right things. Carbs only in the morning and not a lot of them. No complex carbs after breakfast. Still eat Veggies with dinner (which have some carbs), but no breads, pastas, etc...

I know that feeling, im trying the opposite and doing less a little harder.I still can't get the hard core diet down no matter how hard i try i slip at least once a day. But i know im not eating near as much as i normally do plus working out and im in a holding pattern so i would say i have hit the wall also.Good luck with your weigh in....if its good go celebrate with some outback cheese fries and the 2400 calories that go with it.:D

I believe you mobldj, since i couldn't make the comittment you have i understand how hard it has been.what is a normal day of food for you?I have ate pretty good but for instance the last 3 nights i had steak@crab one night.....pork chops and chicken/rice one night with almost a whole box of girl scout cookies and last night spaghetti and garlic bread and a bag of popcorn and still have lost 40+ so i know 60-65 could of been reached by me with some hard core diet.

Well, changed up my routine a little bit. Have been doing a TON of cardio (1-2 hours per day) for the past two weeks. Been lifting 6x per week. Finally broke through the wall and now it is coming off easier. Got on the scale this morning and weighed in at 176. :)

Well i hate to say it but i haven't hit the gym in almost 2 weeks, plan on starting back on the first of may. Going to mexico friday so may try and work out a little there but doubt it.sso i weighed today for my final weight of the contest came in at 268 so i know this isn't close to the winner but for some chance it is i will get a picture or meet someone at the gym before this thursday. i lost almost 50 for the contest and 63 overall so that is a win for me.Good job to the winner whoever it is i will celebrate your victory in cabo.
