I've mentioned I was going to give it a whirl. If anyone is not familiar with the system it's basically a home based workout program, follow along to instructional DVD's.

2 weeks prior to my daughter being born (exactly 19 months ago) I stopped going to the gym. I work a lot and having a child...well, I worked a whole lot more. One thing I have noticed....since I haven't been to the gym I haven't been sick once. Weird.

At any rate, the P90X system has proven to work pretty damn well. I mounted a rigid threaded pipe pull-up bar to my ceiling, got some dumbells, resistance bands and padded flooring. It's basically a mixture of push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, tricep dips, curls and shoulder press exercises mixed in with some high intensity cardio and even some yoga (I f'n hate yoga). There's not one thing that I can't do at home. The kicker is that it's circuit training. Bascially, work work work rest.....work work work rest. About 3 30 second breaks in a 50 minute work out. 3 days a week is a 15 minute, constantly moving stomach program. Baby Jesus, it's brutal. It's 339 movements in 15 minutes. Just the stomach workout has me dripping sweat.

When I first started, getting my fatass up on the pull-up bar was almost non-existent. Now I'm banging out 8 or so sets of 7-8 reps. I was able to do about 30 push-ups and now I'm doing a total of about 300. At first I was able to complete about 10% of the stomach exercise and now I'm about 75%.

When it's not raining I've been mixing in some rough mountain bike rides.

I've only lost 10lbs but I've gained muscle in areas that were originally designated for fat storage.

Since I made the rules I'll play along.
Here's where I started, 230lbs.....(let's keep the gay tribal arm band comments to ourselves, I'm not proud...mmm'kay).

At the 24 Hour Express I go to in Corona by my house they recently installed 4 liquid anti bacteria dispensers. I've been really impressed with how many people actually use them. I use it before I get started on my workout and also when I'm done and ready to leave. I think we aren't the only ones concerned about it anymore. This used to royally bug the crap outta me. I would see people rub their snotty nose, butt, crotch, etc and then use the weights or machines. GROSS!!!!

You think that tribal is gay...what till you see my 69'ing dolphins on my back. If that doesn't scream "shoot your load my way cowboy" I don't know what does. Ahh to be 18 again. I made such great decisions.

You really think I look great? FYI....those are my "before" pics. I hope you still have words of encouragement when you see my after pics.

How is the progress going? I'm going to start p90x tomorrow. I'm what some would call skinny fat, so i've decided to hit this for a while to lean up. I can lift all day, but cardio is a nightmare for me. Hopefully this will solve my problem of getting bored.:beer

It's been great specifically for cardio. I've noticed that just p90x is making a huge difference when I go mountain biking. Hills that used to beat my ass are absolutely nothing now. The guy I go riding with used to be able to dose off while waiting for me...last week I was waiting for him, got some emails sent from my phone and still had time to snack before he got to the top.

Also, in the past 5 weeks I've lost 2" off my waist and gained 2" on each of my legs. After having a few knee surgeries a few years back I was on crutches for 18 months total and had a lot of muscle loss in both legs. That's all a thing of the past.

So it is something that you think is worth the $$$? I know some workout videos suck ass. I would love to get something that works for the house. Finding time to get into the gym is a pain.

What do you need, accessory wise, for the P90X system?

I did a little more than half of the plyometrics workout last night and just about threw up.:thumbsup I had to stop because I was so beat.

As for equipment BB572 you will need:
1. A pull up bar "I already had one that expands into a doorway"
2. Set of free weights "I already had some powerblocks that go up to 85lbs, and am so glad I got these back in the day"

I think that is it for the bare necessities, but I also bought a yoga mat for the yoga stuff to come and sit ups. I also already had some push up bars, but those aren't really needed unless you want to get the full range of motion.
Umm so far they use a stool, and a chair also.

How long are the workouts?

I spent $120 on the DVD's. Based on the fact that I've given 24hr fitness thousands over the years it didn't bother me too much.

I got the pull up bar that goes in the doorway...complete POS compared to the 3/4 rigid threaded pipe I used with flanges and some 90's bolted to my ceiling of my garage.

I also got the resistance bands. They work good for when I'm spent on pull-ups but need to bang out a few more reps. So I'll do about 7-10 pull-ups and then grab a band and do 10 more. Nice burn.

For the tricep dip they recommend using a chair...I use a flat bench. Before that I used a stair in my garage and even my washing machine with my feet propped up on a chair.

I bought a few dumbell sets from wallmart. They are 5-25lbs per each. I got 2 sets (4 total) for $40 and I'm able to go from 5-40lbs now. It's not enough weight for me on certain exercises but I'm able to improvise.

The yoga sucks ass. It does nothing for me. It's the only workout I now refuse to do. My wife hates it too. She'll do everything else except the yoga.

Danny, if you want to get a feel for what the workouts consist of just search on youtube for p90x videos...there are tons. In fact, a bunch of people have recorded the full workout so you can do exactly what they're doing and get the same thing (but you didn't hear that from me).

Each workout is about 1 hr. It's a breeze and so much easier than dealing with sweaty nutbags at the gym.

Just popping in on your thread here because I saw that you are doing P90X also. We don't have a gym close enough to our house and after a friend recommended the program, I bought it. I started 30 days ago and I LOVE it. I already see some great results. It's funny you said that you hate the yoga, because so do I. I skip that one and sub in Plyo because that is my favorite of all the workouts. Some of the workouts still kick my butt and there have been several times that I have yelled obscenities at Tony Horton! It is well worth the money in my opinion!!!

BRING IT!!!

LOL...Bring it! My wife has been doing the workouts with me so we jab each other all the time. The other night she finished up dinner and asked if I wanted some veggies. I made my arms into an X and said "bring it". Good times.

Horton drives me nuts. I just turn it to mute now. I have everything pretty much down but I still use the dvd for the cues. Horton is a too much eye make-up, work-out fruitcake but he gets it done.

Damn, I came home tonight and did Kenpo X with just the cues and music, as you suggested, and somehow I was kicking way more butt than usual, even doing extra reps. I guess it is better without him talking. Threw in a bonus round of Ab Ripper X (I hate it, but I love it:rolleyes:) because I was so fired up!

I have not been able to apply it to anything real world yet but I think Kempo is going to help my baseball swing and golf swing tremendously because of the fast reaction twisting movements. We'll see...

Recently we've been keeping the remote near by. When cookie horton wants to take a break we fast forward his ass....stop talking and start working, cookie!

That's awesome you're doing it too poon. "Time for crunchy frog" I have to agree with the guy...I hate it, but I love it.

After reading this thread and researching it. I did the test and ended up with the power 90 system as ti seemed like P90x was geared more for people already in good shape. Im kind of wondering if maybe I should have gone with P90x instead. My plan was to start with Power 90 then move up to P90x afterwards. I guess we will see.

I just ordered the P90X Tuesday. Partially because of this thread.
Picking up a set of adjustable dumbbells today. Maybe ordering them if I can't find a set I like locally.
Still trying to find a good joist mounted pull up bar for the 10 foot ceilings in the garage.

<-- Not in the challenge but its time for a change.

You'll love it-- its a great program. I got my pullup bar at Target:rolleyes: It was only $30 and works great. You can also use it for pushups. :thumbsup

I thought about getting one for the doorway but I am planning on this being in the garage. I want it to hang from the ceiling.

If you want my door mounted one I'll give it to you. If not, get some 3/4 threaded rigid pipe, 2 36" mounted to flanges bolted to the ceiling, 2 90's and a 48" for the "handle". It works like a charm.

I think it's extremely gay but some people have taken video of themselves and tossed it onto youtube. Here is a guy doing some ab ripper. It sucked ass the first couple times but it's becoming fun.

Did you mount the flanges straight to the ceiling / joists or did you use a 2x6 and lag bolt it to the ceilng?

I don't really think I'll like look of a 2x6 on on the ceiling. I can paint it and add some molding to make it look like it belongs I guess.

I have a support beam that runs across my garage ceiling. It's probably 6" thick. I used 4ea 2 1/2" drywall screws on each flange....holds my 220 no problem.
