View Full Version : Rhino stereo question

So I'm getting ready to have the stereo done in the Rhino. Going with 2 pairs of 6 1/2" co-axials, a 10" sub, 4 channel amp, and...

I'm thinking that doing an I-pod interface to the amp would be the way to go, rather than having a head unit that is really only going to get filled up with dust, dirt, and water as soon as we leave the pavement.

I know there was talk of this over on Hotboat, but seeing the current situation, I figured I would ask here.

I've seen the interfaces for the Ipod to RCA's, but have also seen mixed reviews on them when it comes to sound quality (granted I'm going to be in a Rhino) and a lack of a charger. Am I better off just throwing a head unit in and not trying to do what would seem like the smart thing???

Although I am not Adam. the best way is to get a line driver which will bost the output voltage of the Ipod before it reaches the amp. The radio will NOT last if you take it off road so dont even waste the time or money. I did buy one of those sealed radio mounts for my old one and the radio seems to be holding up (I dont know how much off roading it sees though)

That's why I'm skipping the head unit. Thinking a GPS chart plotter would be a better fit there than a head unit anyway.

What about something like this, other than not charging the ipod, it's along the lines of the final waypoint:

Something like this would be more along the lines of what you would need. the other one is just an input box. but does nothign to increase the Ipods out put level (the Ipod has a shitty output)

You can also get a 12v charger and just "hard wire" it, that way you can charge as you drive. I just wired it to a switch in the dash along with the remote wire to turn the amp on as I did not run a head unit either. Everyone I know that has added a head unit has not had any longevity.

If you wanted to go simple without and amp and sub you can just mount a head unit in the glovebox and use an ipod for your music. I use a Sony head unit (cheapy from Bestbuy) that has a aux. jack in the front and I put some heavy duty velcro on my ipod and mount that on top of the air intake lid for easy access. I just turn the volume on the head unit all the way up and control the volume from the ipod itself. It actually works extremely well for minimal cost.

My setup. No amp but I could put one in if i really wanted it. So far so good on the headunit.

So would I need both of those? The one I found turns the i-pod into 4 channels of RCA pre-amp, however weak the signal is, but it seems to have the volume knob, etc, where the other one just looks to be a booster. :hmm

we have found the best way is to put the radio in glove box,one that controls a i pod say sony, with a marine controller, like on your boat with a display ,that way you can see play list song ect.... and charges the ipod.that way u can keep your i pod clean and safe in glove box.pluss u get a cleaner signal in stead of a headphone jack.........................im out:beer

I have no idea... however, I dropped the Rhino off yesterday with Paul at Outdrive Exchange, with 2 pairs of Polk components, a 10" Polk sub, all the enclosures, and a 5 channel Infinity amp... Might have to call him out and see what's going on...

I do know someone with the HK deal, and for all it does, it doesn't have a volume control. Paul's JL Audio (I think) guy was by and has some new ipod control where you dont need a head unit... Will keep ya posted.

Is outdrive exchange putting the stereo in for you?

I thought outdrive exchange (the business) was in riverside somewhere?

Yes, Outdrive Exchange did the stereo for me, and let me just say, it's incredible.

And no, I didn't drive to Riverside to have it done Dave. If I was going that far, I would have dropped it with Adam, like I did with my truck a few years ago, and have him handle it.

The whole system is very cool and the sound is clean. No, I don't have pics yet. I'll get some up here soon.

Just being able to blast across the desert at 45+ mph and still hear the music was very cool.

I did let Paul do the work at his shop... Yes, I dropped the Rhino off in the aveNEWS for a day and change. And yes, they do amazing work over there.

WFS did the stereo in my truck 5 years ago and I have no complaints there either, other than location. ;)
