View Full Version : A mini garage project - smarter not harder
Project:
I enjoy stand up jetskiis and have to huff them on stands and racks to get them out of the way and service them in the garage. My brother in law had some I beam, steel and a trolley so I decided to make a little A frame on a pulley across the garage.
Materials:
6 inch I beam - qty 2 - 11 ft pieces cut out of a shop
3 inch square tube posts -20 ft
1 ft X 1ft by .5 inch plate X qty 2
.5 inch X 4.5 inch anchors X qty 8
Trolley
Pulley from Harbor Freight
Tools:
Lincoln 110 flux core
Hammer drill
Really cool battery power metal hand skill saw with a carbide blade
Couple of grinders
Before - Last winter I built a rack for my project skis that for my boys. I have a few years to get them ready but they will be coming on and off the racks a few times. Top shelf for the tires and random stuff.
Cut support beams and use laser level to check. Measure a bunch of times. Decided to leave 2 inches between the beam and the ceiling. This will allow me to wrap change etc etc. Beams anchored down. Posts welded to the bases and iBeam welded together by the shop next to mine. North County Metal Fabricators in Orange. Really good guys. Made this project a lot easier and safer.
Raising the beam and start to weld. Supported on the jet ski rack and a ladder. Took four of us to lift on there. It needed to be raised at the same time after the I beam was cut to spec. Once in place we got setup to weld.
Advice my father in NY gave me. DONT BURN DOWN THE HOUSE!!!
Add a little sway support.
Thanks to my brother in law (pictured), multiple neighbors on my block for the tools and help. Things came out nicely on something I have been wanting to build for long time. Skis loaded like clockwork. A nice little two day project and we even had time to go out on the barge.

They are straps the attach to the plate which grabs under the hull seam. Works great - - they came with my pontoon boat. I will check for a brand when I am out there next. Really handy on the pontoon boat winch as well (Have to update that build thread -- busy working and playing).

Overtons and West Marine sells the jet-ski harnesses and rail hooks:thumbsup

Nice job. I have an I-Beam in my garage too. Very Handy for lifting just about anything.
