View Full Version : Trailer Resto #2
Well Im finally getting to the Sea Doo project I bought a year ago.....I wound up trading for an old beat up....but still useable single axle trailer to cary it around ...and that will be the first order of business....Not gonna be a cream puff ...but at least it will be presentable....
I will remove the center rollers as they will be unnecessary....then the fenders will need some straightening up and patching ...then the rusted areas will be sanded and rust converter applied...followed by a scuffing decal removal...prime paint ...new wheels tires bunk boards and carpet....
Follow along
Here is a few shots of what Im starting with...
191
192
First I use the Sawzall and 41/2 in grinder to remove the rollers and smooth the weld area....
193
194
The fenders will need some attention as well..
as were keepin this as cheap as possible...Im gonna bang out the dents and add some patch panels here to save money instead of buying and fitting something new....
195
196
197
Ok the right fender has the worst damage but its easily fixed
It has the rear portion folded up....It needs to be bent back down and straightened ...it needs patch panels front and rear...after rust removal....and a nasty compound dent repaired at the top...
198
199
200
These are the tools needed to straighten this fender....a small and large hammer....a dolly an a couple of pry bars...also this repair is made easier buy using a small inexpensive port a power to push the upper dent and radius damage back out...
201
202
This dent is perfect for the port a power..
203
Position the ram ...and start pumping till things look straight...
204
In less than 10 minutes ..this is what the top and rear damage looked like..
205
206
The fenders had rusted holes in front of and behind the tires....I will cut back to good metal and weld in a patch....
207
Just cut a patch to fit ...grind the edges clean ...hold in place with magnets or vice grips and tack weld....finish welding ....grind smooth....I then cover the welds with automotive seam sealer....and then a zinc rich welding primer.....when all the patches are done the underside will be covered with rubberized undercoating..
208
209
The edge facing the tires has a few rusted out spots ..Im patching these as well....there is a carpet covered wood board going here ...and it needs to be screwed into this area...
210
211
212
I use a nibbler to cut the shapes I need....very valuable tool...
213
214
215
Today Im working on the fenders....the nonskid left alot of glue behind
This is how it is removed...
216
Banged out a large dent just fwd of the fender
217
To deal with all the surface rust this product works very well.....lightly sand the rusty areas blow off the dust and apply this MarHyde rust converter...you can brush or spray it on....It converts rust to black primer and kills the progression of the rust...I have used it for years and when used correctly it works great...use gloves however because if it hits your skin it will turn it black....and it wont come off...till the skin does...
The prevail sprayer is a handy item to have in the shop too...
218
219
Its a white liquid that turns black where it finds rust and dries clear where it doesnt
Here it is after about 5 minutes
220
And after it dries
221
At this point I decided I really dont need these side rollers
222
So the sawzall and grinder come out again...
223
Painted, new tail lights, marker lites, and some diamond plate for the steps.....
227
228
Got some new wood for the trailer bunks ...along with some carpet and some no rust staples for attaching it.......cut to size ...glue it on staple the back side and install...
229
No ...thats not urine....its contact cement...waterproof ...3m
230
231
Ok now it is time to make some carpeted boards for the wheel wells....Pretty simple...make a cardboard pattern of the fender shape....transfer it onto plywood ....glue and staple on some carpet.....drill holes and install
232
233
Transfer shape onto plywood base.......cut with jigsaw
234
235
Fine tune to shape with a D/A sander....or any kind of sander...
236
Lay the board on the backside of the carpet ...and trace...
237
When your done tracing...cut out pattern ..adding 1 1/2 - 2 inches on all sides...
238
should look something like this
239
Here is whats needed to finish this .....rubber gloves..( contact cement burns...glasses would not be a bad idea either)...Waterproof contact cement 2 in cheap brush...stapler with 1/4 in stainless or rust proof staples..
240
Coat the wood and carpet...let dry
241
Carefully place wood in center of carpet...with contact cement ..you only get one chance....press down..now coat the 2 inches or so on the inside of the board for the small amount you are gonna pull over and staple
242
pull trim and staple the overlap...
243
Done....
244
245
246
the requisite signage...:D

Looks Great!! I was going to ask how you bent the wood to match the bottom of the boat, but I guess switching from rollers your light years ahead of the old way on flat planks.
I'm amazed at how easily your able to repair dents, and fill holes etc? An art unfortunately I've never come to master. :( Definately going to give it a shot though after Stacy's 1st trailer ding.. :D

Looks good. How long did it take you to refurbish it?

I stand in awe.
I would have looked at it, got out the sawzall, cut it u hauled it to the scrap yard and used the $ to seed a "new trailer' fund.
I can't do bodywork, either.

I too am getting ready to work on, and hopefully finish up with my trailer. I have already acquired chrome fenders, polished aluminum Centerline wheels, clear LED's, polished aluminum diamond plate for the steps and platform deck at the front, custom v-nose w/crank, swing away tongue with an electric brake set up. I am also rigging up a spare tire mount under the platform deck with a space saver spare. When I put it up there, you can hardly even see it. Right now I am putting the finishing touches on a dolly w/casters for the Spectra to sit in the garage while all the nasty de-rusting goes on. I'll keep you guy's posted as things happen. You can see a few of the pics in my album for SPECTRALEN. I'm still trying to figure out how to load these pics.
