View Full Version : Snap-On toolbox restoration
Some Kind Of Monster

This is the toolbox mentioned in a previous thread that I will be restoring. It is a Snap-On box but appears to be lacking any kind of identifying tags that would give away a date or model. It is sun bleached but has mostly straight lines. The drawers are stiff but should loosen up with a little love. One strange feature of this box is the back door. It has 6 or so small shelves behind the door. It is an almost useless feature for me because the box will back a wall and almost never move. I have a sandblaster and I intend to disassemble the box soon and get to work. It will get a full blasting and Snap-On red paint job.

The box is blasted and I'm removing a few dings and dents. It was too dark to take pics last night but i'll get some soon. This project is being done on my spare time so bear with me!

It's my understanding that there is info stamped into the box. While standing behind the box, it's on the upper right hand corner. At least it is on mine and a few others that I've seen.

1, 2, skip a few steps. DONE!
It turned out very nice and I saved a few $$$$ doing it!
The picture doesn't look very good, but it is just a crappy pic.

Did you have to use some heavy duty durable paint or something?

I got both of these for $200 a couple months ago and I was gonna paint them. Instead I filled them up and cut 1/2" plywood to fit in the inset on the tops and then I cut some 3/4" particle board to fit and screwed it to the tops so they will be held together. Then I glued some rubber to the top and I have a cheap bench box.

Sorry I havent checked this section in awhile. I had the folks at Spaceage mix up some special heavy duty outdoor anti-rust deal to shoot it with. I told them what it was for and tok their word on what to use. Of course it doesn't match the official Snap-On red color but I like it anyway. I use the heak out of it and am very happy with the results!

A few people I know used to sell Snap On; and from time to time they'd get a trade in of an old box and sell it for a good price.

I bought my Mac tool box off of the Snap On truck that had been taken on trade. I paid ~200.00 for it, but that was 15 years ago... Our tool guy had a garage full of used boxes taken on trade...
