I'll post up some stuff as I go.

Let me preface by saying it was rough when I got it. Had a huge hole in the bottom, the foam was all water soaked.

Until I figure out what I'm doing, I'm starting all white and filling in everything except the gas fill. It's in the non-skid and I don't want it to look like a repair.

So here's some pics. I just finished the bottom and flipped it back over to start on the top.

The floor is new, and so is the little stringer, lol. I added a couple of layers of mat to the entire floor. It was as best paper thin before.

I'm sending the rub rail out to be powdercoated, along with the steering hub and gas fill. I think I'll do them all silver so it's kinda nuetral.

Here's a pic of the tank for Dave. I tried to describe it, this is easier.

RiverDave

Does this tank get glassed in around it? Or does that little flange just bolt it to the floor and that's it?

I'd fill in that steering wheel hole as well BTW.

Will the non skid clean up to a nice white? If not, what's your plans on that? Just paint it? (Todd painted the non skid on my old one.. came out nice)

Paint on the non skid, or just a thin coat of gel. We haven't crossed that bridge yet.

I'm putting the old colum back in, it's aluminim and I'm gonna powdercoat it.

I was thinking of doing a bulkhead in front of the tank to be honest.

Getting ready to do the gel on the top right now.

We were going to test the non skid on the rear. He thinks he can roll it with a smooth roller and thin it out.

Does the boat have a turn fin in it?

Did you leave any access underneath the floor to get to it? Or see if there's any water leaking in the future?

On the non skid, I was always told applying the gel (thinly) wasn't the problem. It was buffing it to get it too look shiny / nice.. Because of the texture it's next to impossible. That's why I painted my old one.

I was talking to Lee earlier and he mentioned shooting a thin layer of gel on mine though so I dunno?

Since you are doing all this work anywhays? Why not cap it? Not like it's going to be bouncing off the dock @ roadrunner on a big weekend (or the rub rail is going to help if it is)

Looking good so far, you gonna pull a wildman and strap a 260 to the back?:skull

Yes on the fin, I cut an access hole in the floor so I can remount it. It needs coated, or something also. I forgot about it.

I really didn't consider capping it. Don't know why, just hadn't thought of it. Kinda late now without a bunch of extra work. It seems like a good idea however.

Not to discourage you from capping the boat.. The reason why I won't cap any of the ones I build, is I figure a kid is gonna drive it sooner or later, and I'm definately taking them to the bar. capped boats don't hold up well to either of those scenarios, and are expensive to fix.

I really dont think a rubrail will prevent much damage, unless you do something like this.

Done, all white. Sand and buff next week. The non-skid came out great. three coats of white gel on the top, last coat with half Duratec for a nice shine. Then we pulled the tape on the non-skid and hit it with a light coat of gel and Duratec. It turned out really nice.

Bill, I may do some color. I wanted to start like new and decide what I want on it. If I decide to sell it, maybe someone wants to match their color scheme to something else. I'm thinking I might let Dennis do vinyl on it instead.

I built a new seat and side panels. Heres the mock up. It's not done, but you can see what it's going to look like. Carbon fiber and white, I had to mix a little carbon fiber into this thing somewhere. Something besides the typical Schiada white to put my spin on it.

Yes, that's sufficient. You only need mat if your trying to strenghten something like a seat back or piece two pieces of wood together in a complex shape or something. You cant really staple upholstery to fiberglass mat so anywhere you put it make sure it's not somewhere you need to staple something down.

Racey
03-10-2010, 07:00 PM
For seat frames and other upholstered items you are better off using a few coats of varnish over resin, Varnish Breathes, yet remains slightly gummy. Giving you 2 great benefits, first of all the gumminess seals around the staples where they are shot into the wood, helping prevent moisture from getting in in the first place, resin is brittle, it won't do this, secondly any moisture that gets into the wood can breathe out through the varnish stopping rotting discoloring, de-lamination of the plies, etc etc.

Ask me how i know :D We've been doing varnished only seat frames for decades in every boat we've ever built, and not one of them has ever had a problem, where every resin coated one i've seen starts turning bad after about 10 or 15 years even in the nicest treated of boats.

Never considered doing that. Sounds like a good deal.

The reality is, anything wood, if it gets wet, will rot out eventually no matter what you do. I wont have this boat in 15 years, lol.

What I was going to do is put the rear light pole on the motor cover. The front green and red light I was going to solve by doing this. http://www.danamarineproducts.com/ProductDetails.cfm?group_id=9&catid=92&productid=1942&CFID=815773&CFTOKEN=5d5d7c-bf6ff194-e52c-4c88-b5e2-b8c1b473a5f8 I don't want to cut a hole in the non skid or the sides to add light's. I thought this would be a clean set up.

Gauges are going to be Livorsi in silver carbon fiber. The gps and tach will be standard sized, the small gauges, fuel level, volts and water pressure will be monster gauges. I'll probably do angled bezels also, even though the dash is only 2 feet wide, lol.

I bought the 40HP tilt / trim from CMC for my old one, as well as their smallest jack plate.. After a shitload of engineering / machining etc.. I finally combined them into 1 on the back of my old boat.

My only complaint about them is they are heavy as shit.. They work pretty good though, and are super easy to install / wire etc..

They are heavy because the motor, reservoir, hydraulics, etc.. are all encased in 1 big billet housing and it all hangs off the back of the transom.

When I do mine this time around, I'm just going to use a small piston on the back of the boat, with my own rotating assembly, and a merc reservoir / motor inside the boat.

I'd becareful with the "Monster" guages.. That dash is small and fills up REAL fast.. LOL As well, the outboards don't have sending units on them for water pressure, water temp, etc.. So your going to have to do a bit of fab work to get the sending units on the outboard. ;)

I'm stoked at how fast this is coming together for ya!

I put the stock pt-35 CMC unit on my 10'er. No complaints, could be lighter, but works great. Sets back the motor 6" and gives you power trim. I would do it again, haven't seen anything better or more economical yet. I'm not a machinist like RD and didn't want to custom fabricate anything.

Hopefully I get the trailer situation done in a couple of weeks.

Here's just some more random shots. I put the tank in, the gas fill, the hoses. Mounted my seperator behind my battery box on the transom. Put a bilge pump in. Some new tie downs for the rear. The seat and side panels are done. It's carpeted now. Floor is new and sealed up. I added some matt to the bottom and transom. It seemed so thin to me.

I'm ready to rig it and put the motor on, but I want it easy to move until the trailer is built.

I'm trying a local company, Randall's VIP. I've had a trailer from them before and it was a decent trailer. Box tubing, tandem axle with the guides like yours. More than likely torsion axle to get the spacing correct. We'll see how it turns out. The only thing he said he doesn't do is stainless fenders, and I can live with that. Got it back and he had just painted over the existing paint which had already been painted over by the previous owner (it was supposed to be stripped), didn't bleed the brakes and didn't replace the bow roller as requested. The paint is already flaking in the corners and some of the carpet is coming off the bunks. Needless to say I was bummed and let him know. Mike did cut some off the price, but I would have much rather paid more and had it done as promised.:grumble:

His new trailers are usually pretty nice but be sure to go over it carefully before taking delivery!

Well it's time to start putting it together. I'll take pics as I go.

Ordered Livorsi gauges today (I don't care for the Autometer stuff), all silver carbon fiber, including a gps, lol. Ordered the CMC trim piece. Foot throttle, Dana billet side mount shifter, and a few other goodies. My plan is to get the trim piece on and mount the motor this week so I can service it.

The motor is a brand new with the tags still on it 35hp Chrysler. It's white and silver so it matches perfectly. It was a cool find, and I think the vintage fits this project perfect. It was a friend of mines fathers. When he passed away the friend found it in the garage with the tags still on it. He had purchased it 25 years ago for his little 12' alum. fishing boat and never put it on. So it really shouldn't need much except for some fuel lines, impeller, and maybe a carb rebuild, although there wasn't any gas in it. We will see. It even came with a harness and vintage Chrysler key for the ignition.

It's getting so close now...............Battery is in, dash is wired. Motor is wired, fuel lines are done, steering is connected.

All I have left is to make a panel for the shifter, switches, and ignition. Instally the cables, foot throttle and shifter. Service the motor, and then figure out if the damn tach is gonna work. I think I fucked up with the Livorsi tach. From what I've read online, tiny tach http://www.tinytach.com/tinytach/index.php is the only thing that works with these old motors. I've got a call into Livorsi, I'll see what they can come up with.:grumble:

I not sure if I like the new style Livorsi gauges with the plug in connectors. There's no way to wire them in clean without using a some kind of junction to wire them together. So you can't daisy chain the gauges anymore and you have run back to one spot where they can all be connected together. Anyhow, it's the future of gauges I suppose.

Some more random pics of what I've gotten done. It's still under construction so to speak. I'm trying to put in an hour or so a day at the end of the day. I'd hate to add up all the time I have into this thing or see my parts list.

Alright here's what I was talking about. I drilled and tapped two bolts into the trim plate. I also put a nylock on the other side of the bolt on the side with clearance. The other side lays flat against the ram so I put red thread lock on it. It's not coming loose.

Serviced it, changed the impeller. It was like brand new even though it was the original 26 year old impeller from the factory. Ran it today also, it ran great. Was a little smokey though, lol. I filled the cylinders with oil, and turned it over with the pull starter a few times to lube it up. Then I mixed up a couple of gallons at 60 to 1. I was worried it had been sitting so long it could damage itself from lack of lubrication.

Paul,

I got the holes drilled for my steering and of course the bolts are too short to go through dash and into the helm so need ot get some more. What system did you use and did it come with the dash piece to hold the bezel on before you put the key and hub on? Any pics would be great if you dont have the wheel on already. I need a metal bezzle as I want to PC all the same. The last one I had was plastic.

I put a Teleflex no feedback system on it. No modifications to the system were necessary. The bezel was from EMI, it didn't cover the bracket, so I have to use the black plastic bezel. The steering hub is from EMI also for a Dino steering wheel.

Some of the automatic pumps have a float in them, some of them cycle every few minutes. The ones that cycle sense pressure and stay running as long as there is pressure. I think this thing would sink if it only cycled every five minutes. So it either needs float activated pumps or the WW in my opinion. I could be wrong though, it's just a thought.

I was told that they take in quite a bit of water when they're running. Not sure how much it would take to swamp it but it doesn't have much a of a draft.

And by the time the water witch turns the pump on the whole fuse block will be underwater..

Yeah, I actually had that discussion with someone yesterday. I assume your thinking the water will be conductive enough to create a short? I was wondering that also. I have a spray from Ducky that waterproofs stuff. I think that will be sufficient in protecting it from a short, maybe not though?? I'm not sure, lol. guess I could fill it up with water and see what happens.

As for the WaterWitch, our conclusion was to make a bracket and mount it udside down. It'll be upside down before it hits the water for the first time.

Ok, solved the Water Witch problem, it's upside down now. 1/8" of water should set it off.

I'm going to make a nice bracket out of some alum L angle and lift the terminal block a couple of inches off the floor. I think that should suffice for now.

Only suggestion that I have would be to move the trim to the top of the switch panel and move the horn down. When these things are bouncing all over the place, you will want the easiest access to the trim possible. You are not going to want to be trying to find the middle switch. ;)
