View Full Version : removing rudder?

I read something a while back stating you might pick up some speed by removing the steering rudder on a berkley?

Is this true?

What kind of increases do you see and are there any ill handling effects?

I would love to learn of any tricks that one might be able to do to a jet to gain a little mph. I will never be able to run with the light weight guys but if I could get my 500hp BBC/ Berkley (20.5 Cole openbow) to run around 60 I would be happy.

You pick up 1/2 to 1 mph.. And you lose a fuckload of steering.. (as well as what little steering you had when your not on the gas)LOL

Not quite worth the trade off in my not so educated prop guys opinion.. LOL

You'd be better off taking the Pump to MPD or the like, and getting some pump work done to try and improve efficiency, if your not wanting to get into motor stuff etc.

If I'm wrong on any of this feel free to correct me guys! Just what I understand it to be.. (and common sense guiding my thoughts)

IF you actually gain any speed it would not be noticeable. An IDIOT (squirten thunder) removed mine from my spectra prior to getting it back. I got it back and it was the worst handling POS I have driven, I will NOT drive the boat again until I get a rudder back on. at one point the boat was in some pretty rough water and we actually had to do the Kilrtoy spin maneuvar (not fully intentional)

I had one on my jet boat. I took it off and noticed nothing. No speed increase and no turning problems. Couldn't tell the difference so I just left it off. I think the whole turning thing depends on the boat. Some like it and some don't. I don't think it really matters at low speed either.

You pick up 1/2 to 1 mph..

OK Mygurl... Next you should suggest some thru-transom exhaust for that other 5 mph... :lmao

As was pointed out, if you figure the drag that little profile of rudder creates, what you'll see would be minimal, especially in a family boat. Want to go faster, take less people, smaller coolers, lose weight... All would have more of an effect than taking off the rudder. :D

lmao...loved hearing the story last saturday. although, i think these guys are talking about the rudder that is attached to the nozzle, not a turn fin. i don't have a rudder on mine. it turns fine at idle, ya just have to think ahead :D

Maybe I can strip the interior and thru bolt a lawn chair in for a drivers seat. I would guess I can take 1000lbs out of the thing pretty easy.

My story was from removing the rudder off the pump...the turn fin stayed on the boat and that was the pivot point (most likley made the situation worse).

You should go on a diet too. Your fat ass ain't helping matters either. You should shave your head like I do. It'll create less drag. :lmao:lmao

The funny part of the story is about 10 minutes before. a boat broke (bordsmnj) and we had sea-tow bring it to the dock and we got it fixed and running. so when Spamming blunder broke Sea-tow towed him to the dock too.He wasnt met with the same enthusiasm and was quickly told to "get that piece of S*it, out of here before we sink it". A little rehash (probably been covered here) Jet boat rudders provide help at very low speed (5 to 10 mph) and "dead motor situations " (to some degree) In my experience its almost a personal prefrerence thing, some folks want them some wouldn't have them . river rocks and low drive ways break um . Jet drives steer with "power on thrust" ,let off the gas the boat stays goin the same direction. Performance loss/gain with or without is negligable (sp) Just my 02 :DTom

I broke mine in some shallows and did not notice any difference in speeds or steering at all -- I think it depends on the boat. Mine is a 21' Ultra, it's a lot heavier and slower than many jets, I doubt that little rudder did jack for it. I'm guessing on a quick light jet it would make a bigger difference - but hell I'm just guessing!
