View Full Version : Steering cable loop

Is it necessary to have a loop on the steering cable at the back of the boat right before it passes through the transom? I presently have a 16' cable on my 17' jet. I just left West Marine to price a cable and 119 is not bad for a 16' telefex rack and pinion cable. They want 172 for the 12' cable. (why higher for the shorter cabe?) I'm trying to get rid of the loop at the back of my boat. I don't like all that slack. It already has all the pump mods that would need a longer cable. A 12' cable would give me amost a straight shot with just a little bit of a snake. The 16' I have now makes a loop that just bugs me. I was also trying to get rid of some the resistance in the wheel. Any opinions? Thanks for any input

No need for the loop at all. As long as the alternative cable setup your looking at will install without requiring a curve that is a tigher radius than what the cable is rated for, your GTG. I'm pretty sure Teleflex has the radius information on instructions, 8" radius I think...

This is awesome news. I would defianately like to run a straight shot. Thanks for the input. I think mine is about a 2' radius. The forward reverse cabel has the same loop but I can wait on that one. I am mainly trying to get steering that won't require POPEYE arms to turn it. I know that jetpumps have more resistance but damn....

Actually, they don't. You should just about be able to spin the wheel with one finger. Sounds like you have a really bad cable. Wait til you get that new cable installed. You will be amazed. :)

While cleaner routing will help reduce friction, a rusted/gunked up cable will suck no matter how smooth the routing.

Good luck with it.

FWIW, I just saw a CP Performance ad where they advertised a new steering system, shift cable, and throttle cable for somethin like $249. Might be worth checking out. Look in the "everything else" section of this sites classifieds for the flyer.

I replaced my entire steering cable and rotary helm in my 21 daytona and went to a rack type and a new cable. I was and am still amazed how nice it is now and how bad it was.

I bought the cable kit from CP and it works bitchen you just chose what length cables and rack set up and your good to go.:thumbsup
