Ok Spectra gurus questions?

What years did Spectra put the I/O's in the Spectra 20 baots? and were they Merc, OMC, or Volvo? and how much HP will they handle?

I think I want an I/O if I can get some decent HP out of it.

I think Spectra starting using the I/O in 1979.
They used the Mercury 260 outdrive with the 350 SBC.
They run forever, my brother has this setup in his Spectra 20 and I think
its never been touched. It runs pretty good, about 50-55 mph and great on gas. I would not put too much more power than the original 350 SBC.

Brent I am Geno, I believe I spoke with you via Bobby Phillips last week, I picked up this '76 hull and trailer for a 12' aluninum boat, I rode in a Spectra 20 about 20 years ago and I fell for the boat, the ride, the handeling, the power from the stock 460 was great it ran an easy 50 mph. I have finally got my dream boat and now I get to build it the way I want since it is a bare hull and I have no other choice. But Now, since I have been going through this site I have found a bunch of I/O's and I think I want one of those too if I can beef it up a bit and get some more speed out of it. I have a serious problem... I can't leave anything stock, well.... except for my wife's Hummer, she won't let me touch it.

In Spectra 20s, I've only seen Mercruiser I/O packages. I've seen the 260 package that Brent mentioned, and then a while back I looked at what had to be a factory orriginal setup with a TRS drive and a Merc BBC.

As far as your need to mess with things. You have the perfect boat to do it with. If you want to run more power, you are not limited by what I/O packages Spectra originally ran, but rather the stringer and transom configuration of your hull.

If the back of your hull has the cutout for a Mercruiser I/O, I think it may be able to be used on a Bravo style drive if you wanted to run more HP, but I'd check with Danny at DCM (he builds boats out of the old Howard Custom Cruiser molds which shares the bottom with a Specta 20)on that.

Either way, welcome to the club and start a thread on your build complete with pictures of where it stands today.

Thank for the information. And as soon as I learn how to up load pictures I will keep you updated. I don't know if my computer is out dated and retarded or if its just the user... I would bet on the latter of the two.

According to my brochure , a 330 Merc could have been ordered. The spec sheet only mentions the 260 Merc setup .
