did spectra ever make a 24 with cavitation plates? could you put turn buckle style cavitation plates on a 24 that doesnt have them allready

I've struggled with this as well. I have a 24' Howard (splash of the Spectra) and thought that the boat looked bare with out them. I'm not sure if they would do much for the handling or ride.

I'd guess that there were no recess' in the mold for the plates.

I've seen some done with a piano hinge style that I didn't like.

The 24's had a large hook in the bottom of them (on purpose) from what I was always told. This would help them roll onto plane faster when less power.

There have been 24's built with Cav Plates (I think one of them is for sale right here on this forum?)

If you were going to put bigger power in one, or even want to get a lot more speed out of your boat. You can take the hook out of the bottom, which will free up the hull.. You can have them recess for the plates on the bottom of the boat (most Spectra's are laid up so thick this wouldn't even be an issue), if your boat is a little thinner, they can add material to the inside and still recess them.. Or You can then either do bolt on plates on the back, (Hinged or traditional bent style, but on the outside of the boat) They don't look as clean though IMO, but they do work. I'm doing external plates on my mini boats because I don't want to recess the hull (layed up thin, and just had a new floor put in it etc..)

Rick @ Islander Marine can handle pretty much all of this for you no problemo. :) If he doesn't want to do the machining, there are several shops (including mine) that would be willing to do it. :)

Don't let the glass work scare you though. Rick does this kinda stuff everyday.. He's doing it for me right now, and I'm stoked on the results!

Can they be added? Yes. Do you need to? Maybe. Did they ever come with em? I'm willing to guess that a few left the factory with em and for certain some were rigged by 3rd parties as blank hulls and had them added.

Cutting the recess for them isn't really that difficult if you're at all proficient with a router. While I wouldn't want to do it upside down under the hull, it is possible. The only concern you'll have is possibly having to add more glass on the inside to reinforce the hull if you feel it's gotten thin. Depending upon the layup of your Spectra, this may or may not be an issue.

Hope that helps,
Chris

i know they wont help with the hook built into the hull but i have always loved the look of all that hardwre on the back of the transom of a vdrive boat. i have looked at several 24 spectras and just hate the way the transom looks so bare, shane
