My sons truck seems (as of late) to want creep up to almost the 3/4 on the temp gauge, then will go back down in time to half or just barely over. then repeat.
Is this more likely to be the water pump or maybe a sticky/faulty thermostat??
I am probably going to just replace the thermostat first and see if that fixes it, but thought i would ask here in case someone has had the same issue and what was the fix.

Thanks in advance

Sounds like a thermostat.

So he just called me and says when he is at freeway speeds:D it runs up towards 3/4 when he hit traffic(literally stop and go) it drops back to half. Does this change your opinion any?

That doesn't make a lot of sense, I'd do thermostat first, then check the temp sender after that.

Dunno...but it seems to me you'd overheat in the city, and not the highway, if the fan clutch was bad...?

The fan clutch is designed to spin freely when the incoming air is moving faster than the engine speed turning it. With current overdrive tranny's, the engine speed runs slow. If the fan clutch is bad, it blocks air going to the radiator at speed because it is turning slower than the air coming in. At slow speeds it moves more air than what is coming in, as well as the engine is not producing as much heat.
With all that bs being said, I'm not sure about testing it. It has been a while since I have needed one, and I don't want to steer you wrong.
Good Luck.

If it is the fan clutch, make sure you have/rent a removal tool.
They are a complete PITA without it.
