Don't know where else to put this...

Is it possible, even if difficult, to convert a marine carburated set up to fuel injection? Either TBI or tunned-port/multi-point.

What all would be entailed? In tank fuel pumps, high pressure pump, return lines, computer, manifold, injectors... anyone make a turn key kit?

Very easy. Lots of kits out there.

Google search...

That doesn't help my post count... :D

Allow me to reframe the question, anyone have first hand experience doing a FI conversion?

not hard at all.

fuel delivery, lots of people are simply running ONE electric pump. just dont run low on fuel. better is a small pressurized fuel resevoir to feed the main pump.

manifold, dont bother with TBI, it really wont save money and is nothing more than an "electonic carb". Swap manifold for a port injected, many available to bolt on.

more than likely you can keep you distributor and ignition system.

you can "trigger" the EFI/ignition system from a distributor or crank fired setup. crank fire is the way to go.

4bl throttle bodies are widely available.

I do not like configured kits. Too limited on what you can use with them.

go for the best ECU your wallet will allow. The difference is quality of the box and its asscoiated hardware, features, and software.

If you are at all mechanical, its no big deal. for some people, all the wires and computer terminology scare many people away.

parts list

good ecu 2k
8 injectors 500
fuel pump 300
manifold 300
throttle body 350

DIY labor??????

so for a ROUGH budget of 3500, it could be done.

MegaSquirt is a great LOW COST option.

But it would not be my FIRST choice for an ECU.

I don't like the "self assembled" kits. way too many problems with amatuers trying to physically solder/fabricate, and then headaches with firmware/code. If you are an electronics whiz, great go for it. I also do not like their connectors. they use D-sub type PC connectors, hardly up to the task of any serious marine installation.

You can buy their assembled boxes, but they get up their in price, and price was their big selling point.

too many people think MS is a newbie option, but I think you have to know what you are doing.

if price is a huge deal, shop ebay. i see quality used hardware all the time.

funny, people will spend 25K to put a top notch motor together, but the wont spend 2k for a box that runs the whole thing.

I'm running megasquirt that i assembled, but I completely agree with DaveH, most people don't have the patience or interest to do a megasquirt deal. its not crazy hard, but it does take a lot of reading, checking and double checking to make sure everything is correct. if you have no working knowledge with efi, engines, or computers/electronics. then don't jump into it without really reading up on the info here first: www.megamanual.com

No matter what you go with there is so much in detailed info to be had on that site.

if you are doing a generic setup and still want a megasquirt, but don't want to assemble. I would look into the MicroSquirt, it does basically everything you'd need, fully assembled, and water resistant...both connector design and board/enclosure. it is also quite small, which is a benefit.

No matter what efi is becoming very affordable. lots of good stuff out there, and tons of great used products too. you should also check on www.yellowbullet.com in the spam section, i always see good deals on used efi stuff.

if you have any direct questions about MS in particular i can probably help. there are lots of people on here doing efi. Biggest things is figuring out what its worth to you for efi, what you expect from it, and how involved you want to be in fitting and/or tuning of it. I will say this....Everyone that i have ever met, that has put the time and effort into an efi setup to make it work for them will NEVER go back to a carb! and that includes myself.
