View Full Version : Dad and his Schiada 1st weekend

Before I get into all the pictures, and the boat. I just wanted to openly say Thanks to Lee @ Schiada. My dad can be exceptionally difficult to deal with at times (old Engineer mentallity.. For those with fathers that are engineers you understand) Lee made the entire deal as painless as possible, and truthfully got my dad (whom never gets excited about anything) excited about boating & the river again for the first time in a long time.. My mom has some health issues that are just coming to light, and she's going to be recovering for a bit, so this weekend was exceptionally important for my parents to have a good time. Lee went way out of his way to make sure the boat was ready on thursday night, and that everything came off without a hitch. There's alot more I could say about all of this, but in summation, I don't think you could buy a boat off a better guy, and a better company.

That being said I'll let the pictures do the talking. :)

I picked up the boat on thursday (notice it's dark out.. The guys stayed late to finish the boat, and go over the boat with me etc..) The water on the ground was becuase they were running the boat on ear muff's to make sure it was tip top, and ready for the river.

I got up fairly early on Friday with Stacy to go put the boat in the water for my dad, but much like a kid the night before christmas he was already up, and ready to go.

That's awesome dave, glad to hear that your dad was so excited (I think any of us would be to take out our first schiada) Absolutely beautiful boat! I'll be keeping an eye out over the summer for it!

The weather was perfect during the days, and there was nobody on the river for most of the weekend. With 4 people and 3 dogs the boat was surprisingly roomy for a 21 Schiada (Small block gives you alot more interior room)

The boat is beautiful. Is it new? What motor does it have?

The boat is an 03 Schiada that Lee took in on trade to build a new 24'. It has a Merc Scorpion motor in it (377, 370 prop HP) with a set of Imco powerflows on it.

Isn't there some kind of rule regarding shameless self promotion??? I mean, wearing an RDP hat when you're RD is kind of, well, over the top per se. :hmm

Well the front of the hat said "RD Sux" on it if it makes you feel any better.. I'm kinda pissed actually becuase the river claimed my hat, and my favorite sweatshirt this weekend.. LOL (Don't have the hat anymore)

For you guys that are just interested in the #'s with 4 people and full thanks (65 gallons I believe, we just topped it off) the boat ran about 68 mph on the speedo. As the tanks dropped a little and I was learning a little more about driving it, it was consistently running in the high 60's low 70's. It's a water pick up speedo, so how accurate that is I dunno.. Judging by the ole "seat of the pants" I'd say it's pretty close to the mark. The boat was only tacking in the 4800 RPM range. That being said I'm going out this weekend, and Lee is going to bring some different props to try on the boat, so I'll let you know how it shakes out.

Wow.
My friend enjoy moments like that with your folks.
I lost my Dad a long time ago, and would give every material thing I own for just one day like that.
Sorry for the morbid thoughts.
The grin on your Father's face is priceless. There is a 18 year old kid inside him causing that look.
All our best to your Mother in her quest, and I hope you guy have many more days like that on the River.
I know of a lake nearby where that boat would like bitchin' cruising around!

The rev limiter is around 5250 on those .I spin my 26P B1 props 5000 wot

Truthfully, my dad has just kinda gotten "settled" into a routine, and the river wasn't part of it. This boat has changed that, so it looks like (if all goes to plan) we'll be having many more of those weekends! :)

That sux your hat went missing. Funny thing is that hat is going to float to the Gulf and some Mexican fisherman will find it and somehow someway it will wind up crossing the boarder and you will see it again on some guy in line at a 7/11 buying beer several years from now.

I feel very much the same way.. People always think, that I don't want my family to goto the river, and just use the house etc.. myself. I'm quite the opposite. I got a million friends with pads on the river I can crash at. Nothing makes me happier, then seeing my parents/family out there enjoying themselves, and living / reliving good times.

While enjoying the pics I couldn't help but notice that someone had invited Fred Flinstone along for the ride(1st foot pic.). How'd he like the ride? The boat is great looking that's whats expected from Lee though, that 377 is a great motor. Dave that's the boat I was interested in a couple of years back but I wanted an open bow. Looks like your ma and pa are having a great time, keep positive and what ever your ma is going through we will all keep her in our thoughts and prayers. LOL.. Not my cash. I'm a working stiff "check to check" guy. My dad built the house in the mid 70's. It's his house, I just use it alot. ;)

That's awesome. Did your pops let you behind the wheel at all? I'm hoping a Schiada is in our family's future some day.

Absolutely. :) I went out and ran it around for a few hours to get the feel of it. I'm going to run the boat a little during the beginning of summer until I get the Spectra finished up, which I'm about to get started on ASAP. :)

Which reminds me, how do the boat colors and the garage colors compliment each other??? :hmm:D

Good, I only have to change one stripe! :D Might add another darker or lighter grey stripe to better match the boat. I was thinking about putting a blue stripe on the other side of the garage to match the Spectra, but I'm wondering how it'd look. :hmm

RD,my first ride in a river toy was in the passengers seat of my moms new boyfriends flatbotttom she had no clue or fear,we got a little crooked and for a second gave a shit if i was okay, just knowing how much fun she was having was enough for this kid,at the time i had a big block El Camino and she drove a healthy 69 GTO with the plate (MSJUDGE),neither one of us knew at that time how much our lives would change, this was 1984,from that point our lives were weekends with the family and their water toys and camping and all the other stuff,i remember people asking what i was doing for the weekend and when i told them i was hanging with the folks they thought that was weird and all i could think was poor you,by youre post you have this figured out

Ok now I don't feel so bad. The only thing negative that I got written up for in HotBoat was the location of my trim tab switch. The quote reads "A button on the steering wheel controls drive trim, but the position of the tab switch could have been more ergonomically friendly." If the best rigged boats put them in the same position as I do, we both are making the same mistake. :)

I can't remember 100%, but I believe all Schiada's are that way.. Save maybe the 43? I know the 20's and the 21's have non skid throughout the center section. I'm not 100%, but i think the 22's and 24's have it as well throughout the center section. Looks very good in person, and the texture is very functional.

Well not so fast on that Danny... LOL One of my only complaints on the boat to Lee was the location of those switches.. :D There not bad once you get used to them, but they are awkward as hell at first. We're going to be putting in one of his billet foot racks (dead pedal) on the left of the throttle, and I might hit him up to put a (both tabs down/up) couple of switches in that rack, like they had on some of the boats at the show. Just make it easier to use in general I think.

In other words, I think there's gotta be a better spot on the boat for them then there. That just seems to be the "traditional" spot I guess?

It depends. Some tabs you could put on a thumb switch if they are setup properly. Both tabs would work together up and down. Individual tabs would have to be worked off of the toggle switches. The problem is that the only ones that you can do this on are the ones that have individual pumps and solenoids. The Dana HP series you can do it on, but not on the LT Series. The Bennets are the same as the Dana LT Series & Use the same pump. The Lenco's are electronic with a brain box that controls the tabs. :(

On my boats, that is pretty much the only place to put the tab switch. The dash is a good stretch and pretty full. Only logical place to put the switches is where they are. :(

This boat only has one "pump" for the tabs that I can see, but 2 solenoids.. You can move the tabs in unison (both down, or up simultaneously) so I'd think it'd just be a matter of wiring.

Congrats to your dad Dave. That is great, your dad should be on the river in a nice boat!! Great to see pictures of both your parents at the river again.

Very nice looking boat as well. I like the colors a lot, in fact I would venture to say it probably doesn't look to bad in the garage. :D

Again congrats to your dad heading back out there, I am sure he hates the drive though.........

Isn't there some kind of rule regarding shameless self promotion??? I mean, wearing an RDP hat when you're RD is kind of, well, over the top per se. :hmm

Not usually. If it is a single pump, normally it requires a double pole double throw switch to reverse polarity to bring the tabs up and down. The switches in the thumb piece are single pole single throw. Take a look at the back of the switches next time you are out there. If there is a ground wire going anywhere on the switches up at the dash, the thumb switch won't work.

As far as the hat, it was a gift from SoCal money. We're going to be making a production run (100 hats) here pretty shortly, so they will be available soon. :)

not only that but he is wearing our dana boats shirt.... thanks for the support..

I have more Dana apparrell then probably Dana boats (from over the years.. LOL) Most of it has shrunk in the wash though, so I have to get some XXL's.. (I'm claiming it's the wash anyways)

Never happen Deano.. I wish I was as cool as my old man, but those shoes are 2 big for me.

These are the "spring return" type tabs.. I'll take some pics of it over the weekend to see what's what.

Doesn't matter. All that the spring return tabs do is to allow them to bleed off pressure. It could be done, but plan on a bunch of solenoids and other wiring. Not worth it.

The tabs you have are power down, not power up. You could power the tabs down, but not get them back up off of the switch.

That sux your hat went missing. Funny thing is that hat is going to float to the Gulf and some Mexican fisherman will find it and somehow someway it will wind up crossing the boarder and you will see it again on some guy in line at a 7/11 buying beer several years from now.

Classic.......just.......classic......:D

Congrats to your folks on the new boat and best wishes and luck for your mother Dave.

BTW, was that another forum members boat before your dad bought it? I seem to remember seeing it in someone's sig before. Also, did it have "Torrance CA" on the transom? Just wondering if it's the same boat I've seen in Parker.

I just wanted to say thanks again to the guys at Schiada. It's because of you guys, that I got to spend one GREAT final season with my dad. This trip and a few others like it, we're really the high point not only in his final year, but in our relationship between father and son.

Reading the beginning of this thread again... It just reminds me of the good times, and how much Lee went out of his way to make things happen. I can't thank you enough for that.

Well, truth be told I got choked up when I read this thread just now. I remember reading it and thinking about how cool it was back in March, but didn't want to re-hash it now.

What a great legacy to leave. You are lucky to have had this season Dave, and I couldn't be more glad that you did.

Pretty tough to have anything but the good thoughts after reading this I imagine.

He will be missed.

I can really appriciate how great that must have felt. My parents stopped going to the river years ago. I'd love it if they could get excited & back into it, even if it was for a single season.

For all those out there that haven't had to suffer through this type of tragedy make sure you really enjoy time with your parents. I was so close to my father and there is never a day in the last 5+ years that goes by that I don't think of every thing he did and meant to me. Use our knowledge of this situation to take advantage of the opportunities to spend as much time as you can with dad and mom.

RD your pops and my pops can chill together(my dad can show him around), have him look for the closest Craps table and ask for Big Al Velto!!

Dave it's great that you had this last year with your Dad at the river. My Dad is 73 and is one of my best friends. We have hunted and fished together for the last 30 years. I'm going to be deer hunting with him the next two days. I know he'll be gone one day, but the memories I have of him, will be with me to my grave.

I don't want to sound morbid here... but it's kind of strange. For some reason I can't remember anything right now. I was trying to think up a story to put up in that dad thread, but I've been drawing a blank for the last 20 minutes.. It's not that I don't have any, it's just that I can't think of anything right now.

On the upside of things, the pictures on this thread and on my hard drive, have helped me quite a bit to remember some good times, and to be thankful that we had this last season together. As well I'm glad he didn't go out slow or in some hospital somewhere. I'm also glad he didn't get older and have dimensia (sp?) or alzheimers etc.. Most people that are geniuses get pretty bad brain problems in their later years, and I always thought that would happen to him..

I'm glad that he went out on top.
