I have a 2004 Suburban 2500 4x4 w 8.1L. I use this to launch and retrieve my boats. The evap cannister(supposedly a closed sysem) fills up with lake water when I back into the water to launch/retrieve the boat. Twice a year I have to have the evap cannister and the sensors replaced to the tune of $800.00 each time. The dip shit dealer tells me to stop backing the boat into the water or I will continue to have this problem.

I removed the cannister and am draining the water out of it. It does not have a complete seal as the seams are not glued all the way around the edges and leak water.

There is a vent can attached to the evap cannister with a sensor in it, and another sensor on the front of the engine intake manifold. I heard that there is a retrofit kit that moves the vent to the front of the vehicle. TRUE?

Can I bypass this POS?

Can the cannisters be dried out and re-used?

Can I remove and clean the sensors?

Will the engine light reset by disconnecting the battery?

HELP!

< agrees with the dipshit dealer

the canister is there to allow the vapors in your fuel tank to expand, but trap the HC and not let it into the air. It has to be vented to fresh air for this to happen, and thats how the water gets in.

with that being said...

IF you got creative, and moved the canister vent forward somehow (like extending it with a hose or something), that might fix the problem you have.

A lift kit and taller tires would prolly be a better idea!

:D I thought about moving the vent to just under the fuel fill in the fender. Splice the vapor tubes and splice the sensor electrical wires, but the cannister leaks!I removed the cannister and pressure checked it. The seams leak like a sieve.

:grumble:

Its already a 4x4 w/tall 22" rims and off road tires.

And this is the new one they jus put in??

If you got it from the dealer, it has a "parts warranty" on it. Most parts warranties are at least a year. Let it get good and dry and have em warranty it. Then procede with "your" repair.

Keep in mind though, the computer wants to see a certian value from the sensor, in a certian amount of time. IF you had a whole lota hose to the evap system, it may fault on the "time" issue.

Maybe a different hitch for launching only, so you dont have to back it in so far???

Longer ball mount for the hitch, much cheaper.

not sure about chevys, but, the canister should not leak....or it will have an evap leak causing any number of codes. po442-455 or somthing like that, there should be a valve called a canister close valve that seals and vents the canister.

hope this helps

I removed the cannister and pressure checked it, it leaks at the seams on the top of the cannister. The vent valve is the primary culprit for the water in the cannister. I will relocate the vent valve and to where the fuel fill is located.

I have been trying to dry out the cannister for a month with no luck, I guess I will have to buy a new one and seal it. I will need to either clean or replace the 2 sensors as well. Can they be cleaned? Or once they are wet do they need to be replaced? Can I re set the error code by disconnectin the battery?

A basic code reader can be bought for $50ish and will be able to clear the codes if the issue is repaired. Hell it will clear them anyways, they just re-appear...
