I recently painted a helmet for JBG, here are some pics of the process

Here's the new helmet

http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/3627/rf1000mdbl5.jpg

After disassembly, the helmet was sanded with 280 grit paper and primed.
The primer was then wet sanded with 400 grit, washed, dried and masked before applying sealer and paint

Here it is with the yellow to orange fade and a couple coats of clear

After wet sanding with 600 grit, it gets masked for graphics

Here it is with the lime accent color applied

http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/8943/helmet005if5.jpg

After a light scuff, the lime is masked of in preparation for the next color

http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/8916/helmet007hh0.jpg

It's hard to tell in the pic, but the stripe starts out purple Shimrin in the front
and fades to a cobalt blue Shimrin in the back

If I thought the paint would hold up, then I'd drag that biatch up there next weekend! :D I'm just wondering, becuase every painted boat I've ever doesn't seem to hold up.. Would you use Imron (sp?) or something? As well what do you do about stress cracks etc? Do you just bondo them? Or is it like when you gel coat, where you have to grind them all out, reglass, etc.. (Just wondering if the paint is flexible enough to go over them?)

RDThe stress cracks etc. have to be repaired properly just like with gel

I've shot a little paint myself over the last few years and I think that helps me have an idea of the kind of depth and pop that scheme will have. I wish I could put colors together like that.

Seriously. Fantastic.

I know the feeling. I plumbed his first capsule K boat with Billy B. We got done around 11:30 on a Wensday night. It went straight to Burly and the boat was history before the end of Friday.
And I remember Tony telling me that I was hard on equipment. lol

That was a nice looking helmet and from the sounds of things did it's job.

Nice work TBI!

It was told to me, one of the first things he asked about, " How's the helmet, I didn't scratch it did I?" I saw it and the only things were the visor was blown out and a piece of rubber molding around the bottom neck line was peeling off. The paint was unscratched. And it still looked "TITS!":thumbsup
Nice job TBI.
Do you need an excuse to come down to PHX? Are you coming to the IHBA opener :beerat Firebird? Maybe you could work some magic on my new Spectra?:smackhead
