Does any one have an approximate vertical measurement of a BB carb set up (Merc HP500 or equivalent) from the where the engine mounts (i.e. lag bolt pad) to top of the flame arrestor?

I know the specs for a Merc state it's 24", but I'm not sure what the reference points are.

Weighing all my options for a re-power but don't want to modify the hatch.

Thanks.

It may be easier to ask for a measurement from the top flat surface of the block, anyone can quickly do that.

If you want it from the engine mount, holes, you probably need to specify from the top two,, or bottom hole or something.

The height is going to be dependent on which intake manifold and flame arrestor is used.

Barry,

Thanks for the response, but I'm looking for the vertical distance NOT from the block mounting pad or its bolt holes, but rather the pad where the mount sits on the post in a lag bolt installation to the top of a nominal HP500 type manifold and flame arrestor. Kind of confusing I know.

That's exactly why I suggested that you figure the measurement to the top of the block surface or other standard reference point from the point you are talking about.

Any standard deck big block will have that same dimension, then just add the height of the intake, carb and flame arrestor.

If you still need the measurements, I can get you some. Let me know

Jrork,

Yeah, that would be great. It can be to the top of the flame arrestor or top of the block deck where the manifold attaches as Barry suggested. I really appreciate it.

Okay. I got 7 3/4" from the center of the top 2 side motor mount bolts to the deck of the block where the manifold sets. I took the measurement by laying a square from the bolts to the front of the engine and leveling that. I then measured between that level surface to the deck so that should be pretty darn accurate. This is a Mark IV BBC.

Hope that helps............john

Don't think that was what he is looking for John, but that does exemplify why I was asking for clarification.

I keep coming back and trying to understand what you are asking. There should be no "lag bolts" holding an engine into a boat.

Do you have a boat with an engine in it, or the engine with the mounts that came out of your boat?

Non custom, non hi-po boats often use lag bolts to hold the motor mounts to the stringers. Could be the reference point intended.

Motor mounts could change this measurement an inch or more I would think.

I would think anything with a V-8 engine would need to be through-bolted. What type of boat have you seen with lag screws?

I agree that many of the side mounts that I have seen have some adjustment, and could vary the height, making it even more important to figure the measurement from his particular boat and installation.

Think 1986 Bayliner... Lag bolts holding motors in... Hell if they could have they would have used "Elmer's Glue" for fiberglass resin.

I remember reading a hot boat or powerboat in the mid 90's. Review of a 20-21' low profile bowrider, and they raved that it had thru bolted motor mounts, like a race boat;)

Argh, I read that closer and see what you're talking about Barry. My bad.

Take care of yourself
