stereo cut out question

my boats wired with a toggle switch and a push button to start; when I flip the toggle, the stereo plays through the speakers, but as soon as the motor fires up the sound cuts out. Once the motor stops running, the sound kicks up again. It seems to be the amp seeing how the cd doesn't stop indicated by the counter display. I checked the power wires and it looks like the amp is wired to the perko switch, and all the connections look good. Any thoughts.........?

possible bad voltage regulator, with a meter check the voltage with the engine running, anything past 15 volts can cause the amp or radio to protect itself and shut off. i've seen lots of porsches do this where you rev the engine and the audio quits, once idle it plays. if you measure voltage is should be steady 14-14.5 volts so if you rev the engine and it goes higher, problem.
