I have read some of the other threads and you all do very nice work. I hope to learn more from guys who know what they are doing. I am fascinated on your techniques and am always curious to figure out how some of your builds were set up. I would like to get my machines on line and wanted to know if any of you use a VFD to convert 1 Phase to 3 to run your machines? Any VFD units that work well or possibly one's to stay away from. The shop I moved to is all 1Phase 240V. A couple of my machines are attached. Typical new guy show up and just start asking questions.. But it never hurts to ask. Thanks and look forward to hearing from you.

I use phase converters from Phase-A-Matic. They are on the web. Have one on my mill and 24" bandsaw, work great. www.phase-a-matic.com

Phase-a-matic's are not the best, they are just old school and simple, they aren't even really that cheap, VFD's are waaaaaay better as you can control motor speed directly from them, as well as do ramp ups and ramp to stop, creating less shock on the quill, and not having to use the brake to stop it after you shut it down. I have a friend whose sole business is sales and installations of vfd's. I just put one on my waterjet pump and it works like a dream, automatically ramps up and down speed/pressure as the nozzle turns on and off. They are amazing.

He has sold and installed everything from Danfoss, to Siemens, He recommends Yaskawa, they are more robust, and easier to set up. That's what we put on my pump and it is totally bitchin.

becarefull if you run your motor slow with a VFD as you can bet you don't have a VFD rated motor. And that slows the cooling fan down too.
I've used the Yaskawa's too and they are nice. All of the different brands are these days. Even the plain jane one will do more then you would ever need.

But those Phase-a-matics only cost a tad over 100 bucks and do the job just fine.
