Can anyone recommend a good place for upholstery? Would like some one that does a great job for a reasonable price. Need to get the seats done.

My guess is that you'll get as much info on the 32 here (as soon as Racey chimes in) as you will in any other site.

You may wanna PM Racey as he has lots of info on them (his Dad still owns the 32 molds).

Hey Racey........pick up the white courtesy phone.......

Racey is in the head talkin to Tom Brown maybe.... he knows good '32 info. Another one for sale in Needles I saw on CL today... will find the post.

More than a few of us were in and out of Burbank Marine when the Big Girl first popped out of the molds back in the day.

Look forward to your purchase, rehabilitation of the '32 and photos of the project. Congrats on a true piece of history:party2:

got the boat Saturday, other than old gas it runs and sounds great.
I am going to have to fix one outdrive. the U-joint on the outdrive is busted, well actually the yoke attached to the out drive is. I am going to have to take off the outer bell housing and and have it and the piece attached to the gimbal welded up to fix the ridge the bellows attaches to.

Got the seats and the floor ripped out, found termites and a lot of rot in the floor. got a friend that is going to use the old seat frames as a pattern to make new one. Then have those covered. and use the old floor as a pattern to make new one.

I figure I can make it all out of marine grade plywood then paint with deep penetrating epoxy before its covered. should last a long time that way.

I thought I was going to only need a small part of headliner replaced, but going to do whole thing. only makes sense.

Had an idea on the sun pad. want to see if they can make it out of somekind of sealed foam for the inside and that way I can take it off and use a large float. Dont know if it will work, but why the hell not.

Sorry got to much into working on it and forgot to take pics. will do that this coming weekend.

Damn thing is gonna be expensive on gas.:drunk

Now its all making sense. I was wondering why there were Morse Twin S Top Mount Controls vs. MT-3 Top Mount or U-Flex B104 style controls. Not to mention why there was an additional hole in the dash about the size of the shifter controls, in front of the throttles.

My original thought was that the boat was at one time owned by an individual who was accustomed to running a twin engine ocean boat, and had moved the shift controls to their present location for easier maneuverability around the dock, marina, and launch ramp.

But if the boat has multi-speed transmissions, I understand the the current throttle & shift setup. As up-shifting while applying power, with the shifters in-front of the throttles could be awkward.

The transmission looks like a cut down/smaller version of the 2SPG, but I'm not certain.

Have you shifted the transmission controls to see how many detents you have?

Thanks for sharing the pictures.

spectra3279
06-28-2011, 04:19 PM
Yes, there is only 3. forward, neutral and reverse. I have even looked at the linkage but it seems to be the same.

Gonna fix the hole with some of the Formica that looks like leather. redo the whole dash with it. should look nice.

That case looks like a torqueflite by chrysler... When I worked for Art Carr back in the day we used to make tons of those things with just one speed and a spline drive adapter... I could almost say it for sure! Yep just double checked, we made the transmissions and put a shorty kit tail housing and that bellhousing adapter bolted on with the front pump bolts... I will see if I can find info in my old papers at home tonight...

That is definitely it. So were they single speed or 2 speed? was there any advantage to them? or was it just a tranny to give reverse and neutral? if at a later date, could it be made into a 2 speed?

Thanks for checking on the info for me. would have never thought it was a Chrysler tranny.

It is actually a three speed from the factory, you can get them built as single speeds as you stated you have all the way up to the three speeds... They also offer different gear ratios in all three options... These transmissions are bullet proof, this is what came behind hemi cars... We used to build them to easily handle over 2000+ HP! They use what we called a damper plate between the engine and the spline drive, they had rubber or nylon inserts you may want to check that out to make sure it is ok too... Art Carr is still around, you can call him at his place here in HB called California Transmissions. He can give you the entire history...

spectra3279
07-19-2011, 03:09 PM
Finally got the boat in the water Saturday. Had some issues. Had a leak at the transom exhaust and had one engine that did not want to run correctly. It sounded like popcorn and everytime I put it in forward it would die. Well traced the problem to the distributor and plugs. So replaced it with an HEI distributor. Now motor runs great. Fixed leak with 5200. I have through hull exhaust so not worried about the transom exhaust as long as it doesnt leak.

In a couple of weeks gonna get the interior done. Just have not found someone yet. Need to call the guy earlier in this post though so I can talk to him.

Gonna take it out again Saturday for a trial run number 2. Anybody gonna be around Newport harbor then let me know I might need a tow back:grumble::grumble: This weekend planning on seeing how it does at speed.

Ok, took it out Saturday for another trial run. could only get the starboard engine upto 2600 rpm. I need to rebuld the carbs. But at 2600rpm my gps was showing 48 mph. And it rides like a dream even on 5 foot swells. Did manage to get it airborn but it took the wake from a 65 footer plowing a lot of water to do it.

Ok i found I have a depth sounder mounted to the hull in the bilge. Wires were cut and the wires on the gauge was cut also. Can I just redo the wires and have it work or is there another piece I need. Im not sure of the brand, I need a midget to repel down into the cavern and have a look see. Hell light just barely makes down to the bottom of it.

It really Depends on the System (Transducer and the Gauge)

Older systems have 1 (multi wire) cable that runs directly from the transducer to the gauge. If this is the case then all you do (providing the old cable has not been removed) is reconnect the matching wires on both ends.

Newer systems have a seperate cables that run from the transducer & gauge to a computer box. If everything is there its shouldnt be to difficult to put back together. However if your missing components you might consider scrapping the whole thing.

Post some pictures of what you got when you get a change.

Damn thought I was gonna have to buy a trim pump for one of my tabs. So I took it out and took it apart to check the bushings on the armature and found I was missing a brush. Well Now what are the odds this is the problem?

the brush that was still there was just a little nub. So a trip to Ace hardware found some brushes that fit. Put them in and the damn thing works fine now.

So the brushes only cost me 4.80, cant beat that.

well, Ran the boat hard on Friday. It will do around 85. 3000 rpm is 62 mph and max rpm is 4700, I think this is being limited by the spark arestors on the carbs. they are small and limiting the air flow. I was to scared to look at the gps at wot. Will take a few more times before I am confident enough to look at gps. Plus out in the ocean, was to busy looking for swells.

got in late Friday night. didn't have time to flush the engines so did it Saturday morning. Reaching into the bottom of the bilge to close the valves so I could use the hose connection. I broke a rib. damn thing hurts like hell. Its the bottom rib so cant even wrap it.

Well dropped the boat off at the upholsters yesterday. 5.6K DAMN:cry:

But having them do a lot. Replacing the entire headliner in the cabin, Headliner is huge. modifying the seats, building a few things. and making a cover for the cockpit. recovering everything and coating all the wood with fiberglass. adding cupholders with mounts for some 6x9 speakers in them. recessed so they dont get wet easy. Plus a bunch of other stuff.

They say they should have it done by next friday. So its in time for labor day weekend. Will be at havasu then.

Well supposed to pick up the boat Saturday. Went last saturday to check out the colors i picked out and it looked really good.

Went with a medium grey interior with a red white and black stripes. Looks really good. Had them do some customizing on the seats so they have head rests now. Down in the cabin I had them do the Headliner in a light grey. Rest of the cabin is original. When I pick it up I will post some pics of it.

Ok, Picked it up from the upholstery guys yesterday. Was to exited to take pictures and took it right to the water.

Today just had to much stuff to do so still didnt get pictues. I had to change breaks and one rotor on my truck, then put a stereo in the boat. It sounds great for just 4 6x9 and a deck. No amps or anything yet. Thats gonna be a longer project this winter. I have room for 2 more 6x9 and 4 10"s. Plus 2 12"s if I need them. Gonna run about 3000 watts total. Should be loud.

I will get some pictures in the morning when its light. I took one but its really dark. But you can see what it looks like. Just overlook the mess. I had just finished the stereo.

I built all new seats and seat bases. Martinez did do some modifications. I had them make the bench base taller and make headrests. They did a whole new headliner in the cabin and carpet. Seats and cushions were good. Don't really match but I wanted something original.

Ok, Had some issues this weekend, but all but one have been fixed.

1. Had a trim pump go out. the other one. Changed brushes and it fixed it. Brushes were completely gone. as in nothing but the braided wire left.
Took a couple of hours to fix. Don't know if I got the wrong solder or if the bensomatic soldering iron I got was foobar but it would not melt the solder unless I used the flame. fixed it but it didn't work. Had to pull the motor housing and armature and take it home to fix. Couldn't raise the engine so it had to spend the night and morning at the marina parking lot on the island. They didn't like that but oh well.

2. sprung a major oil leak in the port engine. Don't know where its coming from. Didn't notice it until oil pressure was down to 10 psi at idle. Maybe killed some bearing don't know yet. will have to pull engine to find out about the bearings and find the oil leak.

3. tongue of trailer is heavy duty with big steel rollers to help it move in and out for the surge brakes. Well. got stuck in the drive way in havasu and had to call AAA to come and pull me out. Trailer was off the driveway and sitting leaning really bad. wrecker pulled me out and I think it binded and bent the ears that the roller was held on by. Lost the roller. Have to have a friend machine a new one. Brakes didn't work as good after. or really I had to apply more brakes on the truck to get the breaks on the trailer to work.

4. On the way home lost the wheel bearings on the port side rear wheel. had to drive about 3 miles at 10mph to Orielly's by London bridge. Changed it in the parking lot.

Im at work and Im tired and sore. this sucks.

Whoa, that's not a good weekend, especially in the heat in Havasu.

Reminds me of the time we were towing our 24Spectra from Las Vegas to Phoenix, the rubber literally flew off the tires. Had to buy two new tires in Wickenburg.....

Yeah it was still a fun weekend. gonna pull motor this weekend or next to try and find the oil leak and check bearings for scoring. I hope they werent hurt. But what do you expect, the boat was sitting in a guys back yard for 6-8 years. I dont think it has seen water for 12 years before I got it. I was lucky the engines still ran.

I wouldn't think that auto oil pans would be so bad in that application. Flywheel driven drives puts the sump/pump/distributor toward the back of the boat so when the bow noses up on accelration the oil would gather at the back of the pan, right where the pump is.

Carl

alohajeff
09-16-2011, 05:00 PM
While the location of the sump isn't an issue the capacity might be. One possible issue with the smaller sumps could be oil starvation at higher RPM's. The oil has to bleed back to the sump as fast the oil is being sucked up by the pump... otherwise it will start to suck air. If these engines were rebuilt with a high volume pump it might be even worse off than if it had standard volume pumps. More pump volume usually requires a larger reservoir. I think ditching the small-ish Auto pans is a good idea. And I dig this thread. Can-Do-Attitude!

I don't know exactly how much oil is circulating at a constant 4500rpm in an average BBC. I've heard it's around 4 quarts. If that is true that doesn't leave a whole lot of oil in the pan for G-forces, bouncing around, etc.

Aloha

That is true, but I like the idea of having more oil. a boat motor is always under load so the oil gets hot. I want the extra oil to help keep it cool. Plus, with an oil leak like I had I would rather still have more than 2 quarts left in the pan.

Well, looks like I gotta pull a motor. Even with a nice new mechanical oil pressure gauge, I have lost about 40 psi of oil pressure in the port motor.

Oh well at least I will get to see what is in it and what shape its in. This should be a decent gauge for the other engine also.

Ok, spent the weekend pulling the port engine. what a pain.

But I found out where my oil was leaking from. Seems the previous owner forgot to mention that the oil drains in the pan had been hooked up to a hose. this hose was supposed to have been capped off. This hose was also supposed to have been tied up so that it couldnt fall into the bilge.

Well guess what. It wasnt capped off, It wasnt tied off so it would not fall. and all the oil was draining out the hose. So much for a leak. Well there was no way I could see under the motor. Im not a midget or a leprechaun.

Now the really sad part. I spun 1 main bearing and eat up all the other mains. I have not pulled a rod cap off yet to check them.

So block will have to go to machine shop for line bore and maybe a few rods. Also getting block and heads boiled out. found a shit load of sand in the block.

Well at least now I can look at the engines and find out what shape they are in and see everything even under them.

Ok, need some help guys. Would anyone have any of the manuals or know where I can find them for the Telcor speed indicators from the 70's /80's? I would like to get mine working and the cables were cut. ITs an all electric unit with some kind of through hull fitting.

thanks.

If you look at the oil pan, you can see chunks of copper from the main bearings.

They don't give ya much room between the engines do they?
Looks like a lot of work, bummer about the bottom end, but like you said you will know what is going on, at least with the port engine.

Gotta call from the machine shop today. The Block was originaly bored out 30 thousandths to big for the pistons. Plus it need line boring. Its already a sixty over bore. Had to buy a new block. Crank already had a 30 thousandths grind on one of the journals so New crank. Cam is not a marine cam either, to much overlap. Well the cam I will live with for a while.

Got to much other stuff to buy to put motor back together. Dont wanna have to buy 2 cams and lifter sets right now.

rocker arms were wore and have been really hot so new ones of those also.

How good are the speedometers that use the little paddlewheel compared to pitot speedometers?

Did you update to a roller cam? If not, did you at least load up on high zinc oil? A bottle of GM Break-In additive or similar might be a most excellent idea if you haven't already added one to the crankcase. I am overly cautious after wiping out a few lifters and the cam a few years ago. The same oil I had used for years went Earth friendly and didn't tell me. They reduced the zinc which ruined my 4th of July weekend. I'd hate to see all your hard work go to waste because of the wrong oil.

GM has their EOS additive... Comp Came has some, Crane, etc. The key is to ensure the zinc content is sufficient. Brad Penn has a break in oil that worked well for me in a non-boat motor a few years ago. I gave up on flat tappets and run rollers now because I didn't want to worry about lifter / lobe failure due to crap oil.

If you do a Google search for high zinc break in oil I am pretty sure you'll find the info you need.

Which formulation? The newer CJ-4 has reduced zinc additive content than the previous spec. I have heard too many numbers to know which to believe.

I still run the Rotella T 15/40 in just about everything I own except my Yukon and Subaru. It is good inexpensive oil and the price lets me change it out far more often than if I was running the exotic stuff. Even my CRF450R gets it and it works great on the engine and trans side. I just wish they still offered the older CI-4 spec stuff.
