What's the deal with people who have two to five years of industry experience and won't consider a position under first level management?

I've been in the IT industry for about 20 years with 15 of that in networking and I still configure equipment and handle 3rd tier support when my guys are busy, sick, or whatever.

It surprises me when someone outlines the work they won't do in the first interview. I'm talking about an interview for a position posted as entry level. You know... configuration, documentation, support.... what do they think entry level network specialists do? A couple of people have arrived at their interviews with more attitude than I would expect from a street thug.

Today I interviewed a bright young woman, just out of school, with two years experience and a fantastic outlook. She seemed excited about the work, the possibility of a job, and learning about all the cool stuff our shop is doing right now. She has a great resume but she could have cited chicken plucking on her CV and I would have hired her.

I guess the market is hot right now but the job applicants certainly aren't.

That seems common to all industries now for some reason.
Everyone wants to be the boss on the first day.

Have you ever noticed that when your talking to anybody that works for a small company they describe the owner as an idiot? LOL.. Or it would run better like this and that?

I always can't help but wonder, why are all the owners idiots and all the geniuses working for them.. :D

<<< Rexone = idiot

I tried to convince my employees that I'm an executive but somehow it backfired and I regularly find myself emptying the trash and cleaning the mills, installing new toilets etc. wtf is that all about. I should have become a network geek then I could just interview hot chix all day.

Did you clear the desk with a sweeping motion with you're left arm...throw her on it.....do her... hard and long....(well everything's relative):D....and say.....I think you are perfect for the job?

I've noticed a seemingly large group of people on HotBoat who think they could do a good job running a custom boat building company. As I understand their vision of success, it involves building a world class custom boat with perfect rigging, all the best stuff, high end power plants, custom gel with dozens of colors, world class sound syststem, etc., etc. Then, they'd sell it for about $60K. I mean..... who wouldn't want the world's best boat for $60K?

I'm the sole IT guy at my company. After 10+ years doing some really heavy stuff (I was actually responsible for uptime of realtor.com, homestore.com, homebuilder.com,topproducer.com,etc.. at one time), I'm now the go-to IT guy for a small company near my home.

I'm bored right now, but still fixing printers, answering questions about excel and powerpoint and doing the general IT shit. I was actually hired to do an Oracle e-business suite implementation..and that is still coming... but... mostly just day-to-day IT stuff.

...Some insight about the idiot business owners. Most of us realize, at some point, that it makes a lot of sense to hire people smarter than we are. If we constantly hire people not as smart, well, we won't get very far, right?

Of course, finding the appropriate way to manage those people and let them grow our business for us, well, that can sometimes be way difficult. Especially if we keep throwing them up on the desk and doing them... Jeez, what movies have you been watching?

One of the most detrimental things an employer can do to their business is not listen to what the employees have to say.
