well after working for two and half years without a vacation a big project i was on winded down and now i'm home doing stuff. i go nuts if i didn't have stuff to do and i aint talkin' about mowing the damned lawn. i've been bugged by a few things since i've really gotten to know my boat over the last 4 years(or is it only 3?) i've wanted to change and re-do some things and well i finally got a round-to-it!
things that bug:
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model029.jpg
here we have an MSD 6 series ignition system box. JUNK.i don't care what you say you can have that crap. it's also up too high and exposed way too much to water wind and sun. i don't care for the stock mercury platform that it sits on either. under it we have starter relay, a fuel pump relay, a circuit breaker and a cannon plug. now with the hatch on you cannot get hands in there to work on or inspect any of it.chasing down as many electrical bugs as i have in this deal it got old fast. this stuff needs to be somewhere else and clean.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model028.jpg

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model025.jpg
here is where the battery used to sit.. once upon a time it was simply sheet metal screwed in to those tiny stringers. it kept coming loose so i modified the battery box(drill 4 holes) and through bolted it to the little bulkhead that comes up to floor level. to do this i had to make a hole in the floor just big enough to get my hand in. note there is no battery disconnect anywhere.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model030.jpg
that black thing is the power steering cooler soon to be re-located. just a little crowded back here. it still will be but at least a little cleaner.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model018.jpg
here is a view of carpet glue, delamination, ugly wire, more lag screws, and a dirty ,oily bilge. the oil has taken it's toll in this boat. i've had oil leak after leak in it. that crap stops now.the gel in the bottom has almost completely chiped away. that little stainless traingle lookin thing is the base for the hatch ram. it's moving too as it was put in with wood screws.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model005.jpg
motor's out time to start scrubbing. also gonna cut that carpet back 18 inches and get all the oil and carpet glue up.yuh know whats funny? i thought i'd have this part done in a day. just pull the carpet back and scrub right? LMAO!IWAS WRONG.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model006.jpg
...and scrubbing. notice under the battery box that the glass holding in that bulkhead which the battrry box is through bolted is totally delaminated. not a good sign.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model008.jpg
..and scrubbing some more. notice whats holding the bilge pump in? those gotta go to. i'm all about epoxy putty for that thing.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model004.jpg
well this is as far as i thought i would be taking the boat apart. just gonna add a little glass back in under the motor says I...
well, my good friend Danny of DCM fame came by and took a look at what i had going on. so on the advice that i "shave off my afro and get real" everything came out of the boat. well at least as far as the stern half goes.

ok, lets fast forward a little.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model012.jpg
after filling 41 holes with dowels and resin and very carefully cutting out that nasty little bulkhead the boat went to the glass shop. upon arival it was pointed out to me that when in the sun hit just right-you can see right underneith the stingers! AND THEY'RE CRACKED!! also found more delam that wasn't seen in the shadow of the toy hauler(crowded drive way). the stringers went into the trash. and now we see where the battery will live from now on -solid:D there's also a hole in the new bulkhead under that plate so that the ice chest has somewhere to drain.
another reason why i had previously put a hole in the floor...shop-vac access.

stokerwhore
04-23-2008, 12:19 AM
here's the new bulkhead again. the new one is 6 inches taller in order to tie in with the new micro-lam stringers:thumbsup
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model011.jpg
ok, it's just bolsa core flooring but i wanted it to look a little neat, not just plain.i talked them into leaving part of it exposed under fresh gel.the transom also got the treatment. 3/8"worth of glass and gel was applied to all the flat areas in all three sponsons.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model010.jpg

so before reasembly begins proper might as well take the hardware off and shine it up.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model015.jpg
many hours have been spent making all the parts that are being reused look respectable agin.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model014.jpg
freshly hand polished exhaust elbows

and below we have parts for the new through bolted hatch ram location-
fresh outa the oven. doned my afro wig and hit these with ceramic engine paint. then baked. don't try this in front of the ol' lady:smackhead:swear
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model034.jpg
on the peice on the right it looks like there's a little peice of foil stuck to it toward the bottom...thats just a reflection. i still might send this stuff out to powder coat. we'll see if it survives my installing.

stokerwhore
04-23-2008, 12:31 AM
now the fun part. some how gotta make all this stuff fit back in the boat.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model036.jpg
there's the new and improved hole. that enalbed the glass guys to to add glass to the new bulk head on every edge corner and front and back upside down..you get the idea. makes it extremely easy to bolt stuff on ,too.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model035.jpg
finally got that battery switch i've always wanted. and that little black peice is what came out of the oven yesterday. now, i'm no boat builder but i'm determind to do this the best i can from what i've seen done and what i can afford. so, every hole i put in this boat will be gel coated and sanded. backing plates ,stringer washers, through bolting, etc. i'm going to do my damnedest to not use stinking screws! i wanna thank the guys at Genesis boats for the gel and glass work. Also Danny D. of DCM Custom boats. with out his patience and guidence i woud not have even taken the engine out.
i'll post some more when further progress is made. thanks for looking and feel free to comment and give pointers-Jas

Barry at Obnoxious Racing engines loaned me a block today and things are looking good....so far.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model038.jpg
putting motor mounts in. i've decided that i'm going to put some kind of strut across between the two "upsidedown L" brackets. it was suggested to me to do a while back. been running almost twice the hp that this boat was bult with for some time now(years)
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model037.jpg
here's a rough angle piece for the new strut/cradle/whatever.it's going to be part of that mount bracket. i'll pretty it up later. the lower hole with the red x will have a 1" bolt going into threads. i figure there's no point in swiss cheesin' the new stringers any more than i have to.

now here's where not being a pro, ahem, has it's disadvantages. "WTF is this?!" how do i plumb this thing and why do i need it?
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model040.jpg
so after much head scratching, researching, bench testing and bugging poeple on the phone i came up with this little winner
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model.jpg
after carefull review of the hundred or so pictures i took before and during taking apart the boat i' now positive that's exaxctly how it was plumbed:)sphss. i don't mind learning and on the bright side i didn't have to break nothing to do so.:D

meanwhile ,back at the ranch..Barry is getting ready to check bearing clearance on the mains.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/DSCN40841.jpg
these numbers are from the crank.

stokerwhore
04-24-2008, 11:59 PM
Barry tells me the idea is to try to make bearing clearances within
.0005", and that they usually end up being a little closer than that, but the bearings are not perfectly round, and so measurements are always get taken from the tightest spot. now to a guy like me that doesn't know $#!+ this kinda knowledge is gold. normaly guys like me blow stuff up to learn perfection....if we're lucky.don't let me give the impresion that i've ever built a V8 by myself-i haven't. looking forward to some day when i have the money and knowledge and balls to take a chance on a nice build.
anyway, here the dial bore gauge is bieng "zeroed"(SP?) to the micrometer which is set to the dimension of one of the main journals
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/DSCN40851.jpg
with the caps in place an torqued and with the bearings in there he can now check the clearance.

Here are a couple more of checking the endplay, one you can see the dial indicator better than the other, using screwdriver to move crank.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/DSCN40951.jpg
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/DSCN40971.jpg

Then slightly out of focus you can see how I numbered the rings after they were individually fit to each cylinder.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/DSCN40981.jpg

Then there is a photo of the parts still on dirty newspaper. Note that when they are in the tank to get washed, the papers are replaced with new, clean paper.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/DSCN40991.jpg
Also a shot of the rod bearings, showing similar numbering to make sure they go with the rod they were measured with.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/DSCN41011.jpg
(these pics are too small here to see tiny details like the numbers. if you really wanna see this stuff in gross detail you can view lagre versions by going here:

Besides the crank and main bearings, your engine has 136 parts to go on the rotating assembly. You can see them laid out on the clean paper before assembling rods to pistons.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/DSCN41041.jpg
One shot of 4 of the pistons in the solvent tank. Note that I keep each pin with the piston that it was balanced and pin fitted with.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/DSCN41031.jpg
More photos later,, have the pistons mounted on the rods, and the rings on each piston,, time to tap them in, the easy part after working all day to get them ready to go in, this part is fun! -Barry

sometimes i can't believe how many hours it's takes to do this stuff. so far i've spent 4 times the money and five times the amount of time i figured it would take and i'm not really that close to the end yet. i figure i'm about half way. then again i figured wrong so far. i count myself lucky though to have the time and whatever to try and pull this off. at the end of this thread(when the boats done) i'll have a ten page list of poeple to thank for their knowledge and time. anywayhere's todays progress:

this is part of the cradle or whatever yuh wanna call it that ties the two motormounts togather. it's in extremely rough shape at this point but being just a dude- this thing will be cleaned up by hand. did i mention that i'm sick with jealousy over guys that own and know how to use actual machines like cnc, etc?
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model044.jpg

here's where the mounts for the oil cooler go. got a nice two stage oil cooler from rex marine. it's realy a shame to mount such a nice peice under the motor where it won't be seen but i have very little room for mount stuff.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model045.jpg

here's a mount for the fill/water seperator filter and the fuel pump. with this lttle deal i only haft to put one extrat hole in the stringer. i used thick enough plate to where i can thread it and bolt dirrectly to it with some locktight. again it's rough. this one actualy isn't even cut down all the way yet.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model042.jpg

little better idea of how it "goes". the fuel pump still has to spin 180* inside it's little mount there.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model043.jpg

after spending a whole bunch of time filing this stuff down it ends up something like this.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model046.jpg
this is the msd box's new home. notice the upgrade to the 7 series box. i haven't comepletely given up on them yet.at the begining of this thread i was whining about the location of all the electrical.in a few days you'll be able to see here what happend and where it went.

GREAT THREAD JASON!!!

I took a look at that e-mail you sent me finally.. You sure you want that out of metal? Seems to me if it's going under bunks it'd be alot more cost effective (even in material) to do it out of wood?

If you really want it, I'll make it for ya, but it's not exactly a wham bam kinda deal.. It's more like a 3 - 4 hours each kinda deal... LOL

ok, where, were we ? ah,yes. the fun part. finally bolting all the assorted crap back into the boat.today was a good day.hopefully i've put this stuff in for the last time.
motormount . notice the fancy bracket that was made for the fuel stuff-filter/pump bolts in along with it. the oil cooler will go right on the front of that craddle down kinda low maybe flush with the top of the middle section.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model059.jpg

then we have the trim pump's new home. when cleaning up tonight i noticed that i managed to lose the damned trim pump harness plug. wonder how much those cost. i see a cheap terminal strip in my future ,lol. on another note the four bolts you see holding in either of the two big blue plates are bolted through the transom all the way into the swimsteps.no lags ,no further drilling of the transom.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model058.jpg

at the start i mentioned all the ignition wiring moving. well here it is. to the right you have the starter relay at bottom , fuel pump relay -center and fuel pump circuit breaker- top
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model057.jpg

almost got around to throwing the battery in there just for the hell of it but i don't want it in the way yet when i put the oil cooler in tomorrow,at least that's my excuse. been a long day. also the hatch ram mount is in there. the two little dots of hardware in the fron of that bulk head you see are where the wire clamps are gonna go when it gets wired.

your gonna laugh at this. yes i have a bandsaw. a really nice one- for cutting pipe. it's the portable handheld deep cut type. only cuts 5" deep. ever thing else gets put in a vice whacked with a sawzall and hand filed half to death. if some thing is really ugly i take my 40 year old craftsman belt sand to it and plane it down with 60 grit using a ruler sharpie and a flash light to get it perfect.thats why it takes so long to make these really basic parts. and alos the reason why they are REALLY basic parts, lol.

went and picked up the back seat from Ross at Designer Marine Interiors today. the black stuff is new. there's a fresh coat of resin on all the wood in back and that 31.5"long x 2" x 2" notch along the bottom edge is new. it's for clearing the new taller longer stringers.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model084.jpg

the little -10 water dump is new here. it's for the blower's intercooler

fuel tank switch and access hole cover are in. need to vacuume ,obviously.

this the motor that was in the boat. it's got the brand new power steering pump and Rex Marine alternator bracket mocked up on there 'cause i needed idea's on plumbing.they'll look really nice in their new home.

i'll set the rev limit at 6800. this motor is about torque. torque everywhere. 800+ ft/lbs from 3000 rpm on up...give or take.

so what do the numbers calc out at RPM/Gear/Prop (top end guess)

stokerwhore

well it depends on how much it actually ends upmaking. i'd say solid 100mph. up river, head wind, 120 degrees out, full tanks, four poelple and two icechests.conditions permiting of course.

i don't know..fast enough. :D 120?

today was a long day but a great day. started off clearancing the stud girdles to fit under the vale covers. i owe Barry extra for this one. that took hours one little bit at a time.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/DSCN41421.jpg
then came the intercooler. i wish we woulda got a pic of that. it had an entire Marineland exibit that got flushed out the there. sand all over the place. i was kinda glad i didn't get kicked out of the driveway with the mess that thing made. at last the stuff blowing out of it subsided to a trickle and then stoped coming out. i might see a sea strainer in my future, lol. and my favorite part occured here after a good reading presure test and install of the intercooler. the blower is back!
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/DSCN41431.jpg
the NA motor was fun but there's nothing like having all that instant troque when you want it.

Barry: We actually spread that over two days. Kind of funny because I mentioned that I was not looking forward to removing and installing that stud girdle 8 times to get it right, and it ended up taking a few more than that I bet.
Kind of too bad we didn't shoot a photo. We rigged some fittings and regulated the line pressure down to 25 lbs and connected the leak down tester to the intercooler to make sure it was not leaking.

had to run to the store for some grade 8 hardware and some burgers. that's me watchin' and learnin' ...with that shit eating grin:D

After Barry went over the carb and cleaned things up a bit it recieved seal of aproval. on top of the motor it went. still gotta do a few thing to the carb before we run it.. gonna leave it off untill the motor is installed in the boat . also the distributer and all the accesories on the front of the motor won't be installed untill after it's in and getting plumbed. its a tight fit.
i am extremly stoked at this point.. 9:30 pm and ready to go in the boat.

Today good things happend. got the motor in the boat with good success. went right in. kind of a mile stone. the wiring is turning out bitchen. Danny at DCM has really taken his time to make sure i won't have any issue's. couldn't asl for a nicer job. forgot to snap a pic under the dash but that'll come soon. still have a few odds and ends but just wanted the boat back for the most part. justa few clamps to add. if we were going to use wood screws the clamps would all be in already, but you know how i am about those stupid things at this point.Danny has wired his way around where the motor goes so now that it's in i hafta put stuff in to attach wires to.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model110.jpg
that bundle of wires all the way back there is going to be in the cannon plug. the little bundle toward the front that is barely visable is for the hatch ram and the msd's direct battery connection.don't screw around with msd stuff(no just going to the starter).

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model109.jpg
now you can see why i painted the motors front mounts blue instead of black like the bracket below. things kinda blend. if i get bored over the long weekend i may pull out that old news paper and wetsand the floors. then cover them back up for now.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model111.jpg
here we're going to add a clamp under the nut thats on the lower hydralic ram bolt. straight up from where the stringer hits the transom

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/bordsmnj/stokerre-model112.jpg
got lotsa polishin' to do.

thanks y'all. i mean that. we do what we can with what we got:D

so, mean while back at the ranch i'm slowly plowing through the learning curve. had a rather fustrating morning. but, i learned a few things along the way.here's what i learned:
1)it's damned hard to find just the right alternator pully on short notice. even harder to find a nice one on the shelf somewhere. driving around is futile.
2) don't by the damned belts untill everything is on the motor and straight and lined up nice.
3) neighbors with access to full blown machine shops at work can save your ass. even if the unwittingly just stopped by to say hi .my neighbor,Bill, is taking my pulley to work tomorrow and milling down the back of my billet alternator pully to where it sits tight up against the little fan on the front of the alternator.he'll drop it in the mailbox if i'm not home. so now i'm not pissed that he pulls in the clutch on his harley and revs the motor every time he passes my house. i used to think it was cool. i asked him and he addmitted that he doesn't even realize he does it anymore. force of habit.,lol.
4)things can turn around even after a long shitty day of no results. i have a new attitude after being rained on and forced to cover the boat and give up on it when the thunder started and i realized the rain wasn't just gonna go away. the rain soaked the news paper that i had taped to the floor so tonight when i started working on the boat again i decided to put down fresh news paper. when i pulled the old paper i was shocked at how nice the back of that boat looked. not bragging, just sayin'. so now i'm all happy again. tomorrows another day. even if every damned belt i bought has to be changed to the nextr size smaller to be just perfect....and we'll add Bill to that hundred person list of poeple to thank when this is over and DONE.

well,i've been busy. Danny finished up wiring for the most part. still i little here and there left off untill the plumbing is done. and the plumbing. geez that takes time to do right. Big thanks to Dave at Sweet Performance. had a blast at my two shopping sprees over there. the stuff you see here is by no means finished product but its all here except for fuel lines which are in my truck.got to secure evrything in place still and trim all the blue hose to fit. i went cheap on some of the water lines till i know my set up is dialed. then i'll get the nice stuff.once again i grossly underestimated the amount of time it takes to do right, but it's worth it,big time.well anyway here's the pics:

over all runs good i guess but we're still WAY fat on the jetting. our initial set up was rediculously fat but in the interest of not going lean we stepped it down slowly.we did get around to ditching the big pulley for the little one. haven't got into smashing the throttle yet to see what the max boost is but 5 psi by rolling in to it is no prob. at one point with 4000 rpm we saw 80 mph(for the most part that is low 70's) just the right trim with jsut the right everything.at one point running into the wind i got 60 mph outa 3000rpm. ran out of gas and daylight before we were done testing but so far i'm just friggin stoked! i took the camara but the battery was dead. -Jas
