View Full Version : 19' Daytona Engine Build

NIGHTMARE

So the time is quickly approaching to which I will have to rebuild the motor in my 19' Daytona. The motor has been running "too strong" the last to seasons, and the line "it always runs the best right before it lets go" is on a constant re-run in my head. Plus its about that time:grumble: I currently have a 472 BBC in the boat that puts down about 600hp... Once upon a time I had the dyno sheet for this motor but, its vanished over the last 7 years... I was looking to possibly build a motor with the heads and manifold off the current engine, but using a 502 style block, with my same crank, but con rods and pistons and some head work to match the new set-up. I had talked to a few people, but got a couple different stories. I know there's a vast amount of knowledge being flung around on these threads and was wondering if anyone had some insite into the engine project.... I'm looking to get about 700hp on pump gas and an NA motor..... Any and all insight would be greatly appreciated:blah:

Good Luck on your Build! Barry Obler (Obnoxious001) here on the boards, Provided an engine build combination and gave me tons of knowledge/ information for me to reach my Horsepower Goals.

What heads and crank do you have? Obviously more cubic inches makes the job easier to do.

To tell you the truth Barry I have no clue what kind of heads are on this thing. I've never had the motor apart and what information I did have on it is now the way of the do-do bird thanks to 4 moves. The crank is not a stroker crank, but would no doubt have to be checked to see if its worth using. The motor had a nitrous system when I bought it, but I never used it, due to some "Nightmare" with the boat:grumble:
I've seen some great post from some of your engine builds and would love to get your feedback, or possible combo you would suggest:D

OK,, I was trying to figure out where you came up with 472 cu in,,, 4" stroke with 4.320" bore is 470 cu in (469 rounded up).

If you are sure it's coming apart, guess you could take it apart and see exactly what you have before starting to make decisions. Sounds like budget is at least part of the equation, so figure out what you may be willing to spend. It's difficult to find a good used 502 block (or aftermarket block for that matter) for very cheap, so maybe it could make sense to put a stroker crank in yours. Kind of hard to know without knowing what you have already to tell you to plan on using what you have and make 700HP on pump gas?

Let me echo Brians suggestion for Barry. He will work with you to meet your goals and doesnt let you spend money unnecessarily.

Budget is part of the equation but I am planning to spend a fair amount on the build. Definitely not trying to get something for nothing, but I'm looking to do a complete overhaul of the boat and it'll probably give me about a year of down time to make all of this work... I'm not looking for the highest dollar stuff. Just looking for a strong, reliable set-up. I wanna build it right the first time and not have to tear it down for a while... Not life or death, as to reusing the parts I do have. Just an idea I was toying with. I have quite a few friends that are in the business that I can get parts from. Just looking for some ideas, of some combos or stuff that others have tried and have gotten good results out of:D I do appreciate your guys' time. Like I said, ANY and ALL ideas would be great:blah:

The 472 number was what the previous owner had told me??? Or what I thought I heard him say.... The dyno sheet I once had, had the CI on it... Bought the boat when I was 19. So the brain has had some abuse since that time... Hahahaha

Hi Nightmare, How is the research coming. :D, Just thought I would attach one of the Barry's builds for a read through, I spent many hours reading diffent build combinations for ideas, while constantly rethinking my goals for the HP, Pump Gas or AV, and boat use. Cruising, Drag, Endurace, ECT. Heck I thought so long I was thinking about switching Boats:skull.

There are few other builds throughout the pages for Ideas as well.

Thanks Wrighton. I've been looking around at some build threads, but nothing that tells me specific parts or combos. Still rummaging around though. A lot of material to go through. Haven't had a chance to really look through all of Barry's threads yet. I'm sure I'll find something in there that I like:D.... I have a feeling by the time I get done reading, I'm gonna be more confused then when I started:eek:

That's a good one to start with, made good power from an easy combination to put together.

I will have to find some time and write up the rebuild of the original "Obnoxious" engine that you ended up with!

For a budget easy combo, that engine made great power. I am a little partial to Neil's 565 build because of the sanger mini, but I cant argue with his or Johns 502 build as I have had the oppurtunity to ride in both boats.:thumbsup,

If you leave something sitting here long enough it might end up looking like this.

Lookin good Barry:thumbsup. Was wondering if you could give me a ball park cost on a 502 build that would make the HP that I'm seeking

Just checking in with your project Nightmare, How is the research coming along for an engine build?

Lookin in the direction of a possible 540 build. Barry has been giving me some awesome feedback. Gonna try and start putting together some of the parts over this next season, and hopefully get this project started before the following season. Longer then I had hoped, but I guess that's the way it always turns out:grumble:

540:thumbsup That will get the 19 motivated. I know all to well how a project gets longer than expected/wanted. But I have to say it surely feels good trying to do it right.

Good luck on the part search and keep the updates coming
