OK all Dana boats....is doing the motor swap and drive change out...
So you all know that one of our own has purchased my lil Blown small blk from my personal boat.. so as we/i do the necessary items to upgrade mr Wayne's 79 schiada.. to accept my lil motor.. witch we are also upgrading the drive from and alpha to a bravo with an HD gimbal.. we are also installing a complete new full hyd steering system with dual rams...
as this all unfolds I will be taking some pics not only for you but for mr Wayne to follow along as we progress in this project..
we are doing the drive upgrade and hyd steering and installing a new set of swim steps.. from Dana products as well for his wife...
in the first steps... so that Wayne can use his boat for the first time in several months /yrs for a family vacation...
yeah I know its a lot of work to pull the stock motor then reinstall it only to pull it again.. shortly after he returns home from his family vacation...
Im doing this because I as a manufacture and dedicated friend.. that most of you all know me by now.... I do not want wayne to suffer any loss of time while out with his family due to something missed or forgotten along the way trying to rush this project... that would really suck and make me feel soo very bad... when wayne and his family are done with their vacation and all is flawless we will finish the motor swap from my boat to his... just so you all know ... there will be lots of details that will be needing to be made.. so as the first installment of pics here is what we have...

we have removed the motor and installed the new HD gimbal and bravo drive so that we can set the hyd steering system with out interferance... we also installed the new stainless tilt helm... and getting the boat ready for the remainder of the hyd system to be completed.. stay tuned for more..

I had to make a temp shift bracket to mount the shifter ...witch is the same location as on my motor..

Its cool to see Manufacturers taking on projects like this during the slower times. And shows which companies will be around for the long haul :thumbsup

new rear air vent ...

07-09-2008, 09:17 PM
we also glassed in some extra added support for the rear transom upper area... since they had cut out soo much to get to stock exhaust to fit with the Y pipe..

Is the boat still going to run the stock Y pipe with the new motor?
RD
no ...this is only for the stock motor... when we actualy install my motor we will then cut the new exhaust holes in the trans.... if you notice I had to make enough room between the sterring rams and the swim step for the new holes....
I am doing all the prep work prior to the new motor install so that he can take it out on his family vacation... then we install my motor ...

I'll also settle up with you if you've spent more $$ on some other parts. Even with the stock engine for this trip, it'll be way better than before! thanks

OK an up date on what has been done on our lil project... we cleaned up all the wiring .. and installed new battery box's.. along with new optima... and installed a new transom light.. ok no big deal rite.. well we also cleaned up all the wiring under the dash and got all his exiting gauge lites working. and since he has had the boat the tach had never worked.. so we fixed that too.. and of course we reinstalled the stock motor and we are getting the hyd steering finished up and ready for his family trip in two weeks.. pics to follow....

07-30-2008, 10:25 PM
:Doh one more thing we had to install a new trim pump to get the new bravo drive up and down..

but with all that cool stuff going in, it sure does make my carpet look even shittier! Thanks for keeping me in the loop with all the awesome photos, Bobby! Man those battery boxes are a HUGE improvement. I'm looking forward to getting it out to Elsinore for a test soon:D I gotta say, when you give your word, you keep it! Thanks again.

updates...
the current stock motor is now installed back into the boat... upon working out all the air and bleeding the steering system we encountered an problem with the current carb.. the needles were stuck and allowing fuel to overflow into the venturies.. making it so the motor will not idle... I have taken the carb apart and now searching for the correct needle and seat for this particular carb...
I am currently waiting for a rebuild kit so that once the motor will idle we can get back to setting the steering system then off to the lake .. for this boat has not seen water in a few years.. Wayne is very excited to finally get to use his boat once again... then as soon as he returns from vacation we will be removing the stock motor and replacing it with its new power plant... from my boat.. and then we will be posting lots of pics of the new trans plant.. soo stay tuned..

I would love to but it is not up to me.. my customer has budget .. and still has to finish this deal.... my motor is still to come.. and that was just about it... and he still has to do some interior mods when the other motor is ready for install.... I think the braided lines are the least of his worries... but I do think they will come down the road... thanks for taking a peek of this project..

boat + budget = oxymoron :p
I understand, actually it is nice to hear someone actually respect the customers concern for cost (these are tough times). Shoot, he has a Schiada. He can plan on many, many years of fun and upgrades and probably still get his money out of it....I went with a single ram tie in system and I am very pleased with the sense of safety I feel, even though the steering is not much different.

I would always want to do more ..but I also want wayne to get the most for his dollar.... and being he is doing this on a budget it only makes sense to spend wisely.... when the new motor get installed there will be a few more thing needed .. for a complete turn key project... I'm talking about small misc items like fuel pump.. oil cooler.. lil stuff and some misc hose and fittings... exhaust tips ... so we still have a long haul.. but it is getting shorter..

This boat has so much detail to go, but as Bobby said, I wanna use it while the season is still upon us!:D For everyone who doesn't have the history, the boat was sitting for 4 years prior to me making the deal to buy Bobby's engine. At that point, the boat sitting to boat in way-more-than-usable state went from 0 - 100 MPH in only 2 months. I do have some budget constraints, mostly because I don't want to live on Mac&Cheese, but this isn't the last you'll see of this project! By the way, Bobby kicks some major ass on getting things done, and definitely is a man of his word. Thanks, Bobby!:beer

This past Saturday, a buddy of mine and I got out to Elsinore to test the new goodies on the old Schiada. Bobby couldn't be there, but that's because he had plans already written in stone, and also figured we'd be testing it the weekend prior. However, my boat hadn't been run in so long, the carb made that plan go to hell in a hand basket. Anyways, the test went well. I get to use my boat on a long awaited and highly needed family vacation. Thanks again, Bobby for giving the extra effort to make it happen in time. This will sound kinda crazy, but I almost can't wait to get back from vacation to get the boat ready for the new engine:D

Hey wayne we are almost done with the 20 spectra and it should be going to interior next week sometime... so when it comes time to actualy drop your new motor in you can come in and at least watch soo that you know every thing you can about the install and if something ever happened .. you could help your self in the repairs ... or replacement of things... hell even just to see how it was done ... if you have time next week to bring in your boat so we can get started removing the old motor and drive to get the new on installed... that would be great..

with the drive off and now the motor removed.... we will be detailing a few things on the dash.... filling some holes and moving some things around... adding new gauges.. and such
I am also detailing the new motor so that it has all the same features as what was in my boat... getting the cooling system correct along with adding a cool fuel system to this boat.. as mine stayed with my boat for my future motor...
we will also be installing new Dana hinges for the new hatch as it will have to be made new to fit over the blower that will stick out above the motor well...
I will post pics as I start taking them and as things start to unfold...
stay tuned and thanks for playing along..

1st-the transom gel repair is awesome! It's just what I wanted an couldn't be happier with the look it gave the boat. I knew it was worth the $;)
2nd-the engine looks killer! This brown bomber never looked so good! With the exhaust already in and coolers gettin' there, damn, we're looking at a run soon:):):) No pressure, Bobby, just waiting to hear that thing on a test run:drool
3rd-I am just so happy with the progress. I have wanted to do this stuff myself for a long time, just wasn't getting the time to do it. This is the next best thing. Bobby's a cool dude who gets it done! I love getting the progress photos, it makes moving, structural repairs, the daily grind all go away for a little while. Hello all ... new update..
well it seems that merc in the old days had a different color pattern for their wires... and a different style of 10 pin connector... ok soo after tracking every color from the old merc stock motor and removing the 10 pin connector and then removing to existing 10 pin from my/ Wayne's new motor.. I have successfully adapted all the correct wires together....wooo
so long story short.... we now have a running motor in the 79 schiada..wooohoo
we also have finished all the gel repair and dash infills I will post pics later.. the new gauges are on order and should be in hopefully this week..
also we will be reinstalling the drive and cleaning up all the wiring this week to hopefully be ready for some testing shortly.. stay tuned..:D

well the motor is running and needs to fine tuned ... we also bleed the steering system last night ... but before it is ready for a lake run we are finishing up some re wire work due to the new gauges.. @ the dash ... it seems that the previous owner ??? dd some funny wire job and there for that would be why some things on the dash did not work ... so now Wayne will have a worry free ride... I will get some pics of all the completed dash work and with the motor and drive complete... then it will be off to the lake.... then over to the interior shop for a new hatch...

11-14-2008, 11:59 AM
well ....tomorrow is the big day...we are heading to the lake to water test the boat with its new power plant... and testing a few props to see what will be the best all around for Wayne's use and what the boat likes..
I will get pics posted up and let you know the results... then the boat will be off to the interior shop to get its new hatch made and covered.. :D

well we ran the boat this sat with 4 boys in it and full fuel tanks..
we had a few minor adjustments to make.. but over all this was a rocket out of the hole and the mid range punch was more than exciting..
we were not able to get the nose out of the water for some reason.. even with the tabs all the way up... and the drive trimmed as far as we could before not being good... we never did see any type of roost what soo ever.. and we are looking into the drive rams weather or not they were in fact lifting the boat...
and there seems to be a slight elect problem witch we think we have it narrowed down to the MSD box might be going bad... as there was a slight miss at idle but went away once off idle... we are also looking into the same type of mods that Dave made to his dads schiada with the drive tail to help lift the boat more out of the water for a less wetted surface area..
I have a few pics from when we left the shop .. and whayne took a few at the lake I will post mine later tonight hopfully ..
thanks to jason and forensic for joining us out at the lake..

I'm looking forward to seeing the pics!! :)
I'm wondering if you might have a trim ram leak or something.. I.E. it will lift the drive at idle, or stopped, but when the motor is making power and really pushing on it, it won't lift it?

I can't tell from the pictures, are you guys using a full hydraulic system or a twin ram assisted system? The reason why I ask is because I love that tilt helm that you guys are using, but I have not found it for a rack system. I have only found it in full hydraulic. In some of the pictures, it looks like a cable to the back, but I can't see the brazil valve.

this is the full hyd system.... however they do make this helm for a non hyd system.... but you have to use a rotary steering system.. I have this helm on my boat and it is a very nice piece.. lots of $$$

well we ran the boat this sat with 4 boys in it and full fuel tanks..
we had a few minor adjustments to make.. but over all this was a rocket out of the hole and the mid range punch was more than exciting..
we were not able to get the nose out of the water for some reason.. even with the tabs all the way up... and the drive trimmed as far as we could before not being good... we never did see any type of roost what soo ever.. and we are looking into the drive rams weather or not they were in fact lifting the boat...
and there seems to be a slight elect problem witch we think we have it narrowed down to the MSD box might be going bad... as there was a slight miss at idle but went away once off idle... we are also looking into the same type of mods that Dave made to his dads schiada with the drive tail to help lift the boat more out of the water for a less wetted surface area..
I have a few pics from when we left the shop .. and whayne took a few at the lake I will post mine later tonight hopfully ..
thanks to jason and forensic for joining us out at the lake..
I'd say the mid range punch was definitely exciting. I'll try to get my photos up soon, but the Yorba fires didn't help me get anything set up at the new house this weekend. It was a good first run and thanks for it. :beer Good meeting Forensic as well, always nice to put a first name and face along with the avatar.

I need one for a rack system. The rotary helms are too big to go behind my dashes without it sticking out the bottom. :(

Can you mount it at an angle to the dash? I.E. more parallel to the floor of the boat?

Looks like a left hand rotation drive in this picture? Unless the picture was "mirrored" or something? LOL

I'm looking forward to seeing the pics!! :)
I'm wondering if you might have a trim ram leak or something.. I.E. it will lift the drive at idle, or stopped, but when the motor is making power and really pushing on it, it won't lift it?

I think this may be the case ... I did some prelim checking tonight ... but I will need to do some more testing a far as lifting... :(

So did we ever figure out of if the boat is a left hand rotation or right? I'm wondering if that might have something to do with it? (even though it shouldn't it's possible)

It is just the prop in the picture. They changed out the prop as soon as they got to the launch. I think it (the left had prop) was all that was in the shop at the time and Jason had the props (right hand) for testing in his truck.

yep silly me .. I did not even chek the prop I just grabed it and stuck it on...
but now we put a couple of big guys .. total about 580lbs.. and the drive lifted them with out any problem... but when we were looking at the underside of the boat we noticed that the center skag is bent with a cup in it and it is pointing to the left... hummm I wonder if that could have any thing to do with the bow not lifting out of the water while running.. and the faster we went the more the bow flattened out or nosed in... sort of strange... :hmm

I couldn't tell in the pics if there was a trim gauge, but if not, just hook and ohm meter up to the trim sender leads and watch to see what the drive is doing when you're running it. That will give you an idea if the drive is tucking at speed.
Not that I would ever suspect hook in a Schiada, but is the bottom straight back by the transom? The speed accentuated bow steer is a common symptom of hook in the bottom.
Depending on the "angle of the dangle" of that fin, it could be acting as a hydrofoil but instead of generating lift, it's pulling down, maybe straighten that out while your underneath the boat checking for hook.
If you get really stuck, call Lee and pick his brain.

Boats change while there sitting on trailers.. If the trailer isn't 100% it could add some considerable hook to the bottom over 30 years.
I know the top dog race boats get turned over every other year to every 3 years to have them straightened again.. And those are layed up like tanks.

Dave,
The point I was trying to make is that a Schiada would be the last boat of this genre I would expect to find hook in. Just the same, the trailer in the picture doesn't look like orriginal equipment, so while it "looks" like the bunks fit properly now, who knows what it was sitting on prior, and for how long. However remote the possibility, I would't have brought it up if I didn't think it could be a potential source of the problem.

That's correct.:thumbsup Wayne bought that new trailer from Extreme a couple years ago. Not sure how the old trailer was holding up...

what other dirt can you have on me:eek::eek::eek: Talking with Bobby today, and it seems that the best place to start is the turn fin. From there maybe a whale tail to try??? Eventually, after stealing from Ryan's college fund, there may be a 2" shorty in the works...

I'd be curious to measure where your X-dimension is at comapared to some other 21's.
As well how is a shorty going to help you carry the nose? I think that'd give less leverage to pick that big bow up?

Dave,
I didn't take it as argumentative, I just wanted to clarify where I was coming from. I'm actually right there with you with regards to the X dimension question. I haven't seen any 20'ers with Bravos on em(not saying they're not out there, just haven't seen one). For that matter, that particular boat is one of the few 20' I/Os I've seen. Most of the 20's I've seen were whackers or V'drives like that one that guy who sells fittings has stashed away somewhere ;)
To the owner, check the bottom with a 4-6' straight edge. While you or Bobby is down there, by all means straighten and knife edge the fin, but make sure to check the bottom. Barring something being loose or the glass being shot, those two items are static in the sense that if they're straight on the trailer, they'll be straight in the water. From there verify for certain that the drive isn't tucking at speed. This can be done by tapping into the trim sender leads, or by rigging a mechanical indicator. I wouldn't think about spending $$ on a new lower until all the other variables had been removed.
