Did you end up getting a call about the boat?

I saw some pics of it being towed and having some issues tied to the dock?

Does anyone know the story?

Don't know the exact story but when we in the Ozarks 2 weekends ago I saw him getting towed and taking on alot of water. Dam thing never sunk though! He must have had a good boat builder. :D

Are you saying a Trident sunk or almost sunk?

The boat didn’t sink but it was definitely taking on a lot of water. When I spoke to the owner last week he said that the motor looked a little crooked and that there were some hoses that seemed to be disconnected and letting a bunch of water in. From the sound of things it was an exhaust hose. He said his mechanic was looking around and thought that the motor mounts may have broke causing the hose to pull off. I have yet to receive any damage pictures but when I do I will fill everyone in on what went wrong.

It was a Trident. The Red and White boat with the Ilmor 550.

We called him right after you called me.

Ricky has been, uh... "hard" on the boat. He has turned that thing inside out, and every time it hits a service interval I hear about how hard it has been run. Seems a shame for a boat like that to get run that hard, but tales of lots of dock rash, beat up exterior billet fixtures, broken speaker grilles, amps and head units full of water etc...

For our part, we have replaced all items he has broken free of charge. I even pulled the amp out of my boat and FedEx'ed it to him to get him on the water for a big weekend.

Looks like it might have been some motor mounts that backed loose from the mount to the motor. Not something we touch (shows up from Ilmor installed) but we will attend to it anyway. When the motor backed out, I suspect it created some stress on the exhaust risers and created a water leak. What it sounds like is that the upper hose that joins the header to the downpipe might have gotten loose and filled the boat with water. I still don't know the whole story though, and that would be a truly Herculean feat to fill the entire boat with water from that one source and not notice it happening. My suspicion is that the motor wiggled around enough to pop loose a 4" exhaust downpipe from the boat, which would let in a staggering amount of water. 4" worth below the waterline to be exact.

You were there... how full was it?

The boat has a relatively amazing amount of bilge pump going on back there... three 1100 GPH pumps with 1 1/8" pipes on each, so I am sure they could keep up with almost any load. At the end of the day though, the boat is also within 200 pounds of inherently buoyant too, so it would be hugely tough to sink all the way.

We will get him back on the water. Right now, we are waiting on what he needs so we can get it squared away.

I just want to make sure eveybody is real clear on what I said, I never said it sunk or almost sunk. I just said it was taking on alot of water. Honestly, I felt bad to see a boat like this one take the wear and tear that it has.

We pulled up to one of our card stops (Dirty Duck) and the boat was sitting there tied up. I was stoked to see it sitting there. Deana & I walked up to it and there were a few people from the run we were on checking it out. I proceeded to tell them a little bit about the boat and what kind of person the builder was. (just an fyi, I am an advocate of Wes and Trident Boats) As I was talking to a few people & Deana called me back to the rear of the boat and pointed out a few things. Her and I started to look the boat over and it was looking a little rough from simple neglect. And please don't take this as talking trash(no pun intended), just being honest on what we saw.

So then we were at the next card stop and I heard a great sounding motor coming arond the corner. Sure as shit, it was the Trident boat pulling in. It looked/sounded so good as it pulled around the corner to where we were. Mind you it was a Saturday in LOTO on a rainy/ugly day. Not the best of conditions and it look great sitting on top of the water coming in.

Then at the last stop for the day we were pulling in and the Trident boat was being towed away with 2 guys standing on the back platform bailing out the engine compartment. Looked like alot of water and it was right over the top back platform but, the boat never went under.

Sorry for being long winded but, this is where this thread came from. I am the VERY last person to ever say anything ill towards anybody or anybody's product(especially on an open forum). Mama said if you can't say something nice don't say it at all. :D I was just courious as to what had happen as I thought Wes would have gotten a call.

kphayes,

I don't think anyone thinks you were insinuating anything bad?

I saw the pics at MWBP (did you post them?) where I lurk occaisonally, and was wondering the story as well. I didn't want to post asking in an open forum either as the negative people would come out in droves assuming it was a Trident issue, which I would find hard to believe.

From the pics it looked like the motor or drive had "seperated" somewhat, as the motor was crooked looking.

Wes's explanation makes sense of what happened, and although from the one pic it did look like it had taken on a great deal of water, it definitely didn't look to be sinking.:D

It's a shame the boat's being "abused", but on the other hand it sounds like he's having a great time partying on it, and wringing it out.:beer

I saw them mixed in with a few of the other pics from that day on MWBP.
One of the motor sitting cockeyed and another from the towing boat.

They were on MWBP in one of the poker run pics threads I believe. There was one of it being towed, and another of it tied to the dock with the hatch up. You could see water everywhere in there, and the motor looked crooked.

Incidentally never felt right about not editing up that video for you way back when..(when you guys gave your friend the computer) My laptop took a shit right around the same time you sent me that tape. Another guy Esabataj sent me a tape from a jetboat event and I was unable to do that either.. :(

Dunno if I ever told you sorry for that.

Just checking in here... sitting in New Orleans waiting on a delayed flight through Denver...

Please post the pics. I would love to see them and see what the deal is. Ricky has pretty much said that it isn't my problem, but I am anxious to see what I can do to help him get rolling again.

Just as an "FYI"... The waterline on the boat is on the green line I have drawn in here... The boat is clearly in no danger of foundering, and it still hasn't gone up over the engine bulkhead either....

The bilge pumps don't look to be either on, or perhaps the flooded batteries are messing with the power, but I think it is a real testament to the compartmentalized design, inherent buoyancy and overall construction of the craft that this thing isn't on the bottom of the Lake of the Ozarks right now. A 4" exhaust inlet is letting water in, and the boat isn't going down. Hell... nobody even looks that concerned!

I am pretty sure we will be getting this thing back here pretty soon for some freshening up though... Gonna need some work to get back to perfect.

Not to be a smart ass but just the fact they think they can bail water faster then the water can come in tells me that not being concerned really dont mean nothing.

Point... counterpoint! :D

Fact is, the boat wasn't going anywhere. The buckets were for show at that point. The 4" hole coming in the back where the exhaust used to be attached was a pretty good indicator that whatever water was going to come in, had come in by that point.

They pulled it over to the trailer, pulled the plugs and yanked it out, drained it and drove it home. I just got a call from the performance shop they brought it to, and he absolutely couldn't believe the lack of damage to the boat itself. Both motor mounts had broken, and the motor had been banging on the bottom of the boat for who knows how long. Either way... the boat is sound as a pound still, which we were all elated to find out.

Not yet. I still can't believe that a deck boat got that far flooded and didn't go down. This is kind of what I am talking about, going overboard on design so the boat survives catastrophe...

So how/why did the motor mounts break?

Froggystyle
08-21-2008, 06:06 PM
So how/why did the motor mounts break?

Good question. All hypothetical at this point, but here is the suspicions so far...

They are cast aluminum, so can't take ANY flex at all over any period of time. Our hull and motor box are pretty much the definition of inflexible, but the pads they are mounted to are off the shelf items. Wanting to eliminate any potential failures, we have fabricated our own mounts using thicker material and added gussets to further eliminate any flex.

No telling why they broke for now though. We suspect one went, which killed the other immediately. We are strengthening the mount though just in case.

We had a Glenwood mount break on the twin turbo motor once as well, which was a matter of an inflexible boat and motor with a cast mount. Had we not gone away from the turbo motors, we would have had to attend to that as well.

I guess sometimes a little compliance keeps things together. :D
