Well, since it is pretty much done except for 2 things I might as well show you all what I did over a 2 year period.
We started out with a 1949 3 bedroom 1 bath 998 sq ft house and ended up with a 4 bedroom 2 1/2 bath 2240 sq ft one. I love my neighborhood and bought 8 years ago and would hate to move.
Here is what I started with.
1/2 the front abd back
3/4 demo
5/6 both views of the kitchen that was also the laundry room.

Here are a few more
1 having an extra bathroom was a godsend, we called it the "Blue Lagoon"
2 removing the siding and stucco. (alum siding on the whole house only got me 75$ at the recycler)
3 what happens when tou get too close to the house with the Bobcat excavator.
4 our "studio" apartment (living room) for a while, this definitely sucked.

You cant fire yourself on your own house, trust me, I quit the project a few times but am too cheap to pay someone for something I can do myself.......up to a point. Would I do it again:hmm NO F-ING WAY !:smackhead:D It is nice now but what a time consuming and pain in the ass. It's different when you are getting paid to do something instead of doing the work in 3-4 hour increments AFTER you get home from work.
1. raised foundation started
2. framing happens FAST!
3. living room/ kitchen
4. side of house
5. back of house

1. This area under the stairs was supposed to be blocked off, I changed the framing and added a door to make the space into a closet.
2. believe it or not, the stove and laundry is functional in this pic. Laundrymats SUCK!
3. progress
4. This is the first time I've ever done a shower pan, or everything else concerning the shower. LOL
5. These solar tube skylights work well and I have 3 in the house. Got a rebate on my taxes for them too!
BOBALOO
08-11-2008, 09:43 PM
1. Cast iron drains for the shower, tub and toilet on the 2nd floor. This is a must if you dont want to hear water running in the ceiling with every flush.
2. wiring hell, I've got control of everything. (electrical):D
3. master bathtub framing
4. drywall is here, YAY! :beer
5/6. it goes up FAST and really changes the look of everything
BOBALOO

1. the closet we added under the stairs
2. Our mean inspector.....Summit:D
3. My 1st tile job ever. This is my laundry room.
4. this tile underlayment is called Ditra and only adds 1/8" to the floor thickness. the squares bevel in like a mortise to hold the thinset from separating. cool stuff.
5. my 2nd tile job in the 1/2 bath. I think I did an excellent job.:D

I thought my river house remodel was an undertaking.. LOL Now I know why you just kinda snickered!! Holy shiznit!

Trust me Dave, I know what it takes to do your own work AFTER you get home from the day job....or in your case on weekends.:smackhead Your bathrooms got me motivated to finish the 2 things left on my list. The frameless shower door ( have a curtain now ) and the tile backsplash in the kitchen. Angie brought a few samples home yesterday and we decided on a pattern today. 3x5 tumbled travertine subway tiles in 3 shades and a 4" ribbon with broken glass 2x2 diamonds and travertine diamonds inbetween. I'll post pics as I go.
I havent really worked much on my house for the last year, I burned out but am ready to make a comeback !
I've done ALOT of the work myself and what I didn't do myself I did all the prep work for.
I did all the demo, stucco, concrete, etc
dug the footings and crawl space
all the electrical, rough and finish, and quite a bit of changes in the old part of the house too
including a 200 amp underground service to the house and 100amp to the garage.
drywall prep, furring out studs and ceiling joists using an 8' straight edge so all the drywall is straight.
hardwood flooring (20 hrs alone to level subfloor and install)
stair treads, had to widen them which is harder than it sounds
all solid core doors and I couldn't use pre hung
all the moulding and trim including holding crown up by myself:mad:
tile work
patio cover
concrete forms and grading
lots of plaster and drywall repair in the existing house
framing in the existing house and modifying things in the addition
landscaping and removal of about 6 large trees in the front yard
painting everything but the addition walls
skylights
insulation (not all)
finish plumbing and some reconfiguring of existing
installed all the cabinetry
all the gas lines ( upgraded gas meter to 1 1/2" )
block, stucco and slate gas firepit
fascia board
closet organizers and shelving (2 small walk in's)
damn tile in the master bath took me a month starting with a shower pan to grouted and sealed tile.
window seat custom made in master
there's more I'm sure but I've blocked it out, I had an AWESOME framer that made that part easy. I hired out
framing and foundation. (23 yards in the stem walls )
drywall
roofing
addition walls painted
windows installed
stucco
some of the concrete poured on the patio
rough plumbing (Flying Vees):beer:D
air conditioning ( I had to furr out walls and make duct chases )
Doing alot myself afforded me to put some nicer things in my house, like the cabinets, counters and appliances. I found some at the Sears outlet and on Ebay close to home.
We would get 20% off coupons to Home Depot and Lowes and buy massive amounts of materials at a time. Some sat in the garage for a year before they were needed.
We added 1240 sq ft to our 998 sq ft home and reconfigured about 200 sq ft of the old house to flow with the new.

1. amazing how fast trash piles up
2. walls painted
3. pantry and double convection ovens
4. convection microwave (awesome)
5. wine fridge
6. rangetop and custom hood (3 Days only )

Have Bruce do it for you! He likes that kinda crap.:D I just realized that I dont have many pics of the finished house, I'll get on that tomorrow.
Thanks for the compliment, I think it came out nice too.:beer
When I say I did most of the work I mean I didn't have ANY help from friends because I wanted them to REMAIN friends. I did almost everything by myself..........stupid:smackhead I think the hardest thing was holding crown moulding up without a helper.

Master bath shower and tub, notice the extra tall niches for my wifes extra tall shampoos and conditioners, I actually measured the bottles. The shelves are pre fabbed granite backsplash material that I cut down to fit.

I know contractors do this all the time but they get paid for it. How many people do you know that would tackle this by themselves and actually FINISH the project? I grew up with everything half finished in my parents house, dad was a contractor and had no desire to work after a day at work.

Thanks, even though YOU never came over to inspect the job!!!! (that means lay in the yard in your bikini):skull
Nice jb Bobby. Were those blue covers for the fire sprinklers.???
Oh DAMN! the focking hassle that was.
tha DAY I went to pull permits to pour the foundations the bldg dept told me I needed a fire hydrant flow test. No prob except it only flowed 740 gallons per minute and It was supposed to flow about 1500 GPM!:swear
Options.......
1. Pay to increase the branch line and hydrant from 4" to 8" across 2 houses yards to the middle of the street$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
2. fire sprinkler my house. $$$$$ 10k with the meter upgrade.
I chose option#2
normally it would have been a 1 1/2 to 2 month wait for fire plan check but it helps to know the right people and I poured concrete 2 weeks later.:D Luckily the 1 person I know has a little "influence"
As far as a PARTY, you all missed them, yes there have been a few! I do miss the old days where the HB crowd would get together in CULVER CITY after the boat show. Bowling that night was a blast too.

Bobby is being very modest.
He is a genious.
Granted he possess no home building experience, But he read and I mean he read and read and he taught himself everything.
I watched almost from day one every single day as he and Angie undertook this what seemed uncermountable task.
I watched as he hit homeruns and a few times struck out. But yet he always came back stronger and wiser. It was a very trying and yet at the same time rewarding time for the Bobaloo's.
he is being very modest as he did EVERYTHING HIMSELF, with the few exceptions he mentioned.
DID I SAY EVERYTHING.
This place is a mini castle and my hat is off to Bobby for his meticulious
craftmanship and Angie patience with the project. The pictures do it no justice, Their house is incredible. and Bobby is nothing short of a genious.
Happy 8 year Anniversary Bobby and Angie
