Horribly.. I originally thought the Blogs would be more like what we have now. We ditched the VB blogs, and went to actual profiles, FB style profiles.. We need a touch more integration, and I think they are going to work out well. :)

Lol, well I accidentally hit the last page button on my I-phone some how and while I was there I thought it would be fun to drag the oldest post in this forum back to the top. I think this site has evolved very well over the last few years:thumbsup I however dont quite get the fb connect stuff. I signed up for it but I am not sure how it all works. I think most people are in the same boat:headscratch:

Oh yeah I do have one suggestion for the site, Change the forum Guns Guns Guns to something like " The firing Line" then we dont have a sub section and forum with the same name. That way when you look at it you see G G G with The Firing Line and marketplace under. :thumbsup

I'll answer that but it's a broader question then your thinking..
We'll get to the FB connect in a second.

The idea behind the profiles is to make it EASIER for people to share content. Being able to upload 100 photo's at once, and put them in the forums with a couple clicks.. Have videos in their profiles, etc..

The profiles are modeled after FB profiles, so that you will know when your friends have uploaded content that isn't placed in the forums. It is basically a FB knock off. The upside of it is every swinging dick you've ever met in the world isn't on your profile like FB.

I know some people (lawyers etc..) that won't post river pictures, because they are afraid their family will see their wife in a bathing suit, or perhaps their clients, or family from the midwest wouldn't understand the river lifestyle. This allows those people some form of social networking without intertwining their social groups. They just leave their FB page disconnected.


FB connect / what it is / how it works / why it's on RDP.

What it is.. It connects your RDP profile to your FB page, for the purpose of publishing content to your comment wall. No more no less. It doesn't give me or anyone access to your FB page. If you upload photo's to here and want to share them with your friends, you click the blue "F" and it will ask you to write something (if you want) you click Publish and it puts it in your comment wall on FB. You can also do this for comments throughout the main site.

I.E. If you wanted to post a comment on your profile here "Hope to see you all New years!" and you have FB connected, it will ask you if you would like to publish that. Click yes, and it put it on both so you don't have to do it twice.

Why is it on RDP? The answer is simple, when you upload photo's here (which is my goal to get people uploading 1000's & 1000's of photo's throughout the summer) they can "publish to FB" When they do that, it will give some thumbnails and put it in their comment section of their FB page. here's why it matters When their friends on FB click on the thumbnails, they are directed to the gallery on RDP. If they click the profile "RiverDave" they are directed to RiverDave's profile on RDP. etc..

So if you have 200 friends on FB.. and 3 of those friends are on RDP, and say 20 of them are into boating.. You just introduced 17 more people to RDP. This is how RDP will grow into the future.

RDP also has photo tagging, where the website will e-mail a person not on the site that is tagged in a photo. This will also help RDP reach out to new members.


It's a website, your either growing or your dieing.. There's no in between. If you're growing, then the website can support itself, generate income, etc.. if it goes stagnant or shrinks, lights go out.. It's that simple.

The overhead on this place is 650 - 700 a month for servers etc.. Plus anywhere from 500 - 1000.00 a month in development. This isn't including all stuff we have historically given away to the members etc.. When I was giving away shirts at events and threads of the week.. the monthly nut was around 3K a month - 4K a month..

As summer approaches, we're gearing up for that again.

Meanwhile, RiverDave's Place is gaining brand recognition around the internet well beyond what you would expect for a relatively small boating forum.

In cases where my thoughts on brand recognition differ from Dave's, I'd pay close attention to what Dave has to say because I know I'm about to learn something. :cool:
