It makes it so much easier to write about an article about a boat when it's something that you are excited about. It's not exactly a secret that I am a Hallett fan, and I have been since my youth. In particular the 210, 240, and non stepped 270's are boats that are legendary in my mind, and on my bucket list to own someday. Some will remember back when I was writing for Performance Boats, I did an article titled "The best boat / motor pkg of all time" and the three contenders were the Conquest, Talon Cat, and the Hallett 240, ultimately with the 240 taking the
Since I moved to Havasu two years ago I have met a lot of different people in town. Through a chance encounter I happened to meet "Lil Ricky" or "Pretty Ricky" as he was sometimes referred to as by the local female bartenders and waitresses.
I find it a bit odd that as popular as these boats were back in the day I have never actually been in one. I'm going to actually say something now as well, that you will have never read in any boat review of any publication anywhere. I actually went into this boat, and article with a somewhat of a predetermined dislike for the model.
I came away with a different opinion after spending even a few minutes in it. I suppose that comes from the
I started a thread asking what the members wanted to see from the Los Angeles Boat show first, and there was quite a bit of interest in the "Entry Level" market. This year I decided to start our reviews off with the 21 Schockwave Skier!
The 21 Skier (and others like it as the hull was manufactured by other builders as well including Ultra, Caliber1, Cobra, and others) was the Industry standard of what a 21' West Coast boat should be in the mid 1990's. They are docile to drive, they ride fairly smooth, and with the "cab forward" design they have a ton of room in them for passengers and a day out on the water. They are a perfect lower river boat, great for Parker, and the occasional Havasu trip so long as it's not a holiday weekend, or a real windy day.
Lets crack the hatch and dig into this particular 21 Skier at the show a little deeper.
