You fucked yourselves. The new tax plan doesn't allow you to deduct state income tax. They are saying that if you live in CA more than likely your taxes will go up. Congrats on that.

You don’t know that. I do know that Brown just raised your taxes. Hillary wanted to help pay school tuition, pump more money into the government... she would have had to raise taxes.

I hope you're right but it's not looking like that. I haven't heard one thing that I'm going to get a tax break on yet.

That would be nice considering we're still paying on a student loan and I'm almost 50.

Student loan deduction is on the chopping block too, not sure how it fared in the final version though.

That is incorrect. She said your (our) taxes were going to go up during the campaign... unless you are poor, which niether of us are. Shit goes up or goes down, it never stays the same.

I’m pretty sure they did it this way to keep red states red, make purple states redder, and punish the blue states they have no chance of winning anyway.

What I dont get is why the Dems in the blue states care. We vote for every tax increase put on the ballot here in CA, and now everyone is up in arms because Trump might raise taxes here.

HA! As a business owner? You think you're going from 35% to 21%? From what I understand, any business owner that has a decent CPA is only paying paying 21% already after deductions and etc. Maybe Shintoooo can comment on this.

The Republican house and senate would have kept HRC from doing pretty much anything, and we would most likely still have the exact same economy we have today.

Trump has yet to do anything to significantly affect the economy up to this tax bill, and HRC would have not been able to get anything through a Republican controlled Congress. So nothing probably would have happened.

End of the day, the math is clear, people who had high itemized deductions, such as blue states will most likely get tax increases.

Let's do the math in general. A Ca taxpayer pays a marginal rate of 12.3 percent on high incomes, but prior to this bill they did not pay federal tax on this.

So, 100 dollars of additional income at 12.3% to the state plus 87.7 dollars at the top federal rate of 39.6. Total tax was 34.73 to the feds and 12.3 dollars to the state for a total of 47.02 of tax on the 100 dollars.

Now you pay 12.3 on the 100 to the state, and 37 on the 100 to the fed for a total of 49.3 of tax on the 100 dollars. And that assumes your only previous itemized deduction was your state taxes. If you own a home, pay property taxes and have other itemized deductions, many of them will now be gone. And let's not forget the obamacare taxes, Trump left those in for you to pay.

On the other hand, those who own businesses get a 20 percent reduction in their federal income before computing tax so they pay 12.3 plus 37 on 80 for 29.6 yielding a total of 41.9 of tax on the 100 dollars. A cut in taxes for business owners, an increase in taxes for the working person.

The Trumpkins in here have always argued that the reason they voted for Trump was because two of the biggest problems in America was the collapsing middle class and the runaway debt and deficits. Great news is that this bill hurts the middle class, and increases the debt and deficits.

As Helen Keller said, even a blind person could see that coming. Heck this bill even has special provisions for commercial real estate, winery's and golf courses. Wonder who owns those type of businesses? Trump's tax plan is for him and his cronies, not for the middle class that supports him so reverently.

Oh, and if you think health care premiums went up under Obama, which they did, just wait until you see the increases under Trumpcare that is incorporated in this tax bill. All of us now get to subsidize the 15 to 20 million who no longer will buy health insurance but then show up on the hospital steps with higher premiums to us.

Doesn’t seem fair to the rest of the country that California could tax obscene amounts from residents to waste.
Then CA residents pay less to the FED.
Then the FED still sends billions to CA every year in funding.
Seems like Double Dipping to me.
I think I’d be pissed about this loophole if I were living in Nebraska

Who creates the jobs for the middle class?

I assure you I will be after this cut. Not only in projected employment, but also with further capital investment. Now I understand not all business owners will reinvest their new found profits, but as an American loving business owner, I will.

It's called capitalism. It's not perfect, but it kicks the shit out of the socialism that this country is heading for.

Now if we can just get those whores in Congress (that you raise money for) to do their jobs and stop lining theirs and their donor's pockets, the middle class might get somewhere.

My co-workers in California make more than I do, and the benefits they receive in California, by far, make up for any additional taxes they pay (for those who work for hourly wages).
The down side is limiting the mortgage, and state & local tax deduction @ $10,000.

I'm sort of curious what benefits?

And by additional tax are you including the rediculous tax on fuel or out of control DMV fees?

Gas has always been more expensive, and California roads are overall nicer than most states.
California has trains to nowhere, and Phoenix has their projects too.
I don't believe there's a better place on earth to live, than California, and as a result, it has traffic, and homeless problems, and that will only continue to grow outward.

A couple nice benefits from a middle class view point is how workers are protected.
I like the Double-time pay they get on Sunday, and anytime after a 10 hour work day.
I also like the set 40 hour work schedule they get, and are not required to flex their work schedule to reduce their overtime.
When I lived in Corona, I doubled my paycheck regularly, and at times tripled it. After ten years, I cashed out, and moved back to Phoenix.

One ton six tired 4x4 here.
Anyone that caught the thread about my road trip two years ago knows I covered several states, in that empty truck, lol.
I felt almost at home in Texas and OK(except for my Cali plates)
I saw more Dodge trucks on the road than anywhere.

That's a valid point so let's take a look at it.

First California taxpayers send more federal tax dollars to Washington DC than they receive back as does Nebraska so they should both be pissed.

But Democrats strongly believe in your premise of double dipping and as such the Pease act exists named after Democrat Donald Pease from Ohio. In essence, higher income earners lose the deductions for "obscene" california taxes as the code currently exists via the Pease act while the working middle class can deduct them. Unfortunately this ends under Trump.

In the case of the Trump tax plan, not only do higher income earners still lose the ability to deduct SALT, but now he takes them away from the working middle class.

So basically Trump is raising the taxes on the collapsing middle class, all the while higher income earners aren't really losing anything by eliminating the SALT deductions as they were already losing them under the Pease act.

You are currently able to pay for those DMV fees with pre-tax money as they are deductible. When this bill passes, you now get to pay them with after tax dollars as they are no longer deductible.

It is very expensive in Arizona also. The last vehicle I bought was $4,800 for a single year.

Want to borrow my Montana PO box? $217 a year for vehicles up to 4 years old, $87 for 5 to 10, $28 for 11 years or older or you can just get a permanent plate on 11 year or older cars for $87.50. :)

I look at it as the cost of business. California is out of control, flips a big middle finger to the trump admin and then Expects the same admin to bail them out all the time. If you want ca to be held accountable for its out of control spending it has to start somewhere. Kinda like big businesses getting large tax breaks. I don’t look at it as trump helping the rich, I look at it as motivation and attempt to keep business in the US and helping business out.

Quick question on this...

Does the deduction of state taxes come at the expense of all tax payers?

If a person chooses to live where there is a state income tax, why shouldn't they also pay the same Fed tax as anyone else?

Seems like the deduction equals a discount on Fed taxes.

Correct me if I'm off track.

Exactly, why should anybody pay less % than anybody else in another state. Just because one lives in a state like Calif. why should you be able to pay less % than me living in Az. in FEDERAL taxes.

You are on the right track. The idea behind that deduction is that the taxes already paid to a state are not available as "income" to the individual. Since they are not available, the AGI is lowered. Same tax brackets but the "effective tax rate" is slightly less due to lower AGI.

Ask it another way.. if you live in CA and pay more in state taxes, why should you be able to deduct more from your federal taxes than someone that lives in a state with lower taxes?

It cuts both ways.

So...would it make sense to direct any anger regarding this to the state of CA tax system rather than the Trump plan?

Would the long term effect cause CA residents to vote for candidates that would reduce the state income tax?

You may direct it wherever you like. Places like CA will always have some form of property, income and sales taxes due to the high infrastructure demands. They can certainly manage this more efficiently then they are, but it's not going away.
