Celebrating 75 years of USA Water Ski one photo at a time... "The 'Fastest' Nationals Ever" reads the headline from the article in the October/November 1967 issue of "The Water Skier," the first year that water ski racing was part of the water ski national event as a "demonstration" sport. A special AWSA committee had been studying the possibility of adding ski racing to the AWSA "family" for two years and ski racers were hoping for a favorable reaction by officials to their demonstration. Apparently a favorable impression was made because AWSA began sanctioning race events two years later. Today's racers will be certain to get a chuckle out of the mention of the cost of the boats in the article ($10,000 SK Class rigs). In the picture, Skip Volk's Red Hornet boat with the race teams lined up on the dock. To read the article, including an excerpt from a mid '70s AWSA Media Guide about ski racing, go to: http://www.usawaterski.org/FacebookPhotos/1967RaceNationals.pdf

Just testing my memory bank -- was the "Red Hornet" #50, Vic DiCarlo's boat and his son was Joey DiCarlo (super fast in 13-15 boys and then 16-20 boys)?

Looking at this pic today, I THINK the guy 4th from the right is Brent Berge ? My Pop's said Skip did not have a
"race ready" boat available as this exhibition race was put together at the last minute, went on to say they had to stop in Phoenix an pick this boat, "Red Hornret", up from one of the Berge bros, Brent or Craig, he didn't recall.

Definitely later than 1982, it has the year on the paper so Meadsnake can confirm. The Schiada in the pic is a 1984 and I don't think Meadsnake's family had that boat until 1989ish? Godzilla wasn't around until late 80's as well. Cool photo, thanks for sharing. Love this old stuff.

That was Godzilla pulling Corey Cook and boat 855 Was Paul Chandler pulling Dave. It was in1992. That was the year that Marti Wells hurt his leg real bad.

Thanks for posting Sue (assume it's you the way you wrote about Paul and Dave). I saw it on FB too,, figured Godzilla was pulling Corey before I made my stab at the year. I was able to read the article,, Martie flew out by Life Flight.

When I worked for Skip he usually had a Wickens Whirlwind long deck available. I took it on vacation when Skip loaned my 17' boat to a customer. Then he got his Chipmonk. That took up a lot of his and my time. I flew with him to several of his air shows.

I have restored the hull on my 1955 Joe Mandella flat bottom v-drive. It was built with twin props/twin rudders. It was built for Rozzie Barton for a speed ski tow boat. Dave Sammons installed all the original hardware and my 1956 Oldsmobile. Schiada Boats paainted the hull as original in turquois/white with a 1956 Oldsmobile design. I am working on reinstalling the boat and engine. The boat was P - 2 from the Pasadena Boat and Ski Club.

I'm going to say that was '92...it was one of my first ski races that I went to and remember Marty tearing up his leg.
