Does anyone know how many miles people have gotten out of the Ford V-10 and how reliable they are when they get over 200,000 miles?

It wouldn't be a daily driver, just to haul stuff the to dump, take the dog to the lake, etc...

I have a friend that has almost 400K on a 1 ton utility bed work truck and it is still going strong. He is a concrete contractor so it has been hauling weight its whole life. Besides the shitty fuel mileage most owners love them.

Yes....but they live a bit longer behind the V10 since they dont torque them to death at low rpm. Ford used that same trans until they rolled out the torqueshift 5spd in 05

Find a friend that has a IDS and monitor the relative compression and so on and this will tell a lot. I work with a lot of V 10's and if maintained they will go just as long as a diesel less power without the more expensive service cost. Just make sure it's been serviced and not abused.

Those mod motors can last a looong time. Just stay after the known issues and they'll darn near last forever.

What are the "known issues" on a V-10? I just replaced a fuel pump at 106K.

Another question, I have some bare molex connectors in the access panel directly below the steering wheel. Wondering what they are? Edge or Hypertech programmer from a prior owner or some feature that I don't have? 2001 Excursion LTX.

My motorhome is a 1999, so its got the lowerst horsepower offering V-10. I average 7-8, but its funny because my buddies F350 averages 10! At least they're consisitent!

1 - The early ones (2001 and earlier I think...could be wrong) have a tendancy to shoot the spark plugs out, damaging the threads and requiring inserts. Not enough threads on the plugs, and head. Also, if you do change the plugs, there is a good chance they will strip out if they are originals. I think ford will do them all for you, with inserts, for around $600.

2 - Broken exhaust manifold bolts

Thats all I got.....keep oil in it and a shell gas card, they seem to be pretty solid runners. 2005 and newer have way more power, with the 3 valve heads. You also get the much better 5spd torque shift trans too, that makes a huge difference.

Yellowboat - I saw a couple of late 80's F-250s on the Sac Craigslist if you are in the market.

You guys better hope OC stays out of this thread!

Man, that ain't no shit...

I have a 1998 30' class c motor home on a 1997 E-Superduty chassis I bought new. First year of the V-10 in this chassis. 260 hp, 405 TQ

It has 60k on it and is completely done. Blown out spark plugs now all 10 inserted, major start up knocking, excessive oil consumption (1 quart every 200 mi.) Constant check engine light for lean bank conditions that no Ford Dealer can figure out. 7x at various Ford dealers for the same issue.

So I don't share the same views expressed here, unfortunately. I will never visit a Ford anything again. I cant sell it in my right mind knowing all the issues. $6.5k to change the engine in a no value situation. The E4OD shit the bed going up highway 330 to Big Bear causing an entire day of drama (Input shaft sheared) at 52k miles, Never hated a vehicle more.

Now all the dash vents have a mind of their own.

Dammit, too late.... :grumble: I recall reading your posts in the past about your V10 troubles & they haunted me when we started looking at getting a different moho. I'm hoping that it being a newer year model & low miles (2004 w 35,000 miles) that it does ok for us. If not, hopefully the Good Sam deal helps out.

Damn, I was all happy reading this thread too. :( :p

Well get this bitch to me and I will park it on the side of my property and then I will fit in here :)

I liked mine, but I had an electrical gremlin that wouldn't go away. I didn't want to get stuck out in the middle if the desert again, so I sold it.

It got terrible mpgs, but I knew that going into it. It wasn't a daily driver, so I didn't care. Mine was a 200o which came with leafs upfront, but it had a coil over z-link kit on the front. It rode well for a lifted 4x4.

I think by 01 they got that fixed knock on wood I've never had that problem and I'm the 4th and 6th owner of this truck ( don't ask)

I haven't had any issues with our 2000 excursion ([emoji16]). It has about 130,000, changed all the plugs at 90,000 and so far so good. We've only put 9000 miles on it in the last 5 years...

I don't care what anyone says, I can pull chiriaco at 70-75, in second gear towing the boat (about 8000lbs), when it's over 100 degrees any day. Did it for many years. Now it lives in havasu permanently hooked to the boat (retirement). It's been a great truck [emoji106]

My 99 motorhome seems to run well....its on a E450 chassis and has the 4.56 gears so that probably helps for sure

I didn't see that this post was thanked by the op, so I un-participated.

I don't remember seeing your post, except when it was quoted. I want to hear the good and the bad.

I have a lot of friends with a motor home on the Ford V-10 chassis, and they go lots of miles (200k to 300k) with no problems, and those things are always under a big load.

I don't like Fords that much but the V-10 seems to be pretty good.

I have an 04 Excursion with 162,000 and it's been pretty good. Never get your coil packs wet or you will need to replace them. Don't ever pressure wash your Motor!! Went through a Trans at 120,000 and replaced all spark plugs and coil packs at 135,000. It hasn't missed a beat sense!! We love our Excursion we will have it for many years to come!!

125 on my 2003, haven't even changed the plugs. I think the tranny is letting go, I don't think I have an overdrive. Since 2005 the tranny has had a shift bump. But, I'm wondering too if I change the plugs and coil packs, that it would solve the issue; I've read they can be related.

On the spark plug deal, I belive motors made after November 2002 have the longer plug threads, and they don't spit lugs. I was terrified of this issue, and researched my motor...made in November 2002. Figures.

But, so far so good. Down to 9.5 per gallon now...I really need to change the plugs lol. I only use it to haul around horse feed and drop the daughter off at her private school a few miles down the road.

Yup, I'm THAT dad with the POS truck in a parking lot filled with European imports, lol.

Chino Hills Transmission would be my recommendation.

Father/Son company and are racers. Fair price IMO considering I sheered the front drum off the input shaft.

There is an E4OD and an E4OD HD and the HD version is pretty tough, I had the std version in my motor home. Go figure. Now an HD.

I did some trailer work on their race car trailer a few years ago in exchange for some tranny work. First class operation and some great pricing.
