Started breaking ground today on the RV garage here at home.

First order of business is to re-route the main water line between the well and the house so they can grade and dig footings:

I will update this as we go along.

How big of garage are you gong with? I want a 2K double RV garage added but have to wait for a few things to occur for me first.

Just over 1,400 sq ft. As I mentioned in another thread, our lot is a strange shape, so we are trying to maximize every possible inch..

Yesterday they completed re-routing the water main.

Today, they will begin grading and digging the footings.

Awesome! Is Charlie doing this work? Did he give you a timeline to get it done? You'll probably be down with that before we're done with the houses [emoji15]

Give me a call so we don't forget to put in a conduit for speakers and TV [emoji106][emoji106]

Well 3 weeks later and we have some progress to show.

Footings have been dug, most of the rebar is in as is the forms for the strong walls. The County has changed it's requirements since we built our house. The new garage has to be engineered. Our contractor (yes Zack, it's Charlie) told me that this "little" garage will have more concrete in the footings than our entire house and existing garage...... I guess it isn't going anywhere.... :D

I would run power in conduit in the slab too. It's easy to throw it in now and will make wiring it later a breeze

Power (and conduits for AV) will be run prior to the pour. This garage will have a 200 amp sub panel and be wired for 220 compressor, welder, etc. Zack (Paradise) will be doing the AV and tie it into our rack.

No plumbing in this garage. Thought about it, and then decided we have enough plumbing in the house and current garage. The only thing it will have is several hose bibs outside.

Pouring the footings today. I'm told there will be 4 trucks worth of concrete.... :yikes

One of the workers found a rattlesnake in one of the trenches this morning. He was kinder than me and relocated it out in the desert.... :(

Thanks Pete....

Clint comes out a lot in the winter. He is big into the dunes.... Super nice guy. I haven't seen him in a couple weeks now......

We are having to stage all of the materials for the garage in front of his house because the Refuge manager won't let us place them across the driveway. He says that we are ruining his dirt..... :rolleyes Anyway, Clint is real cool about it.

Charlie and I both chastised "Rico" about not killing it. He said that if he killed it, his daughter would kill him. I asked him "who wears the pants in your family?" I don't think he liked that very much..... :D

very nice. Couple ?'s
1. How deep you going.
2. How high will the door be 12' or 14' .
3. 6" on the concrete floor

We are just starting our process for a 35 ' deep x 50' Wide. We thought about doing a steel building ,but might be now going to stick built ? Decissions decision.

Great thread , will be following very closely :)

Front footings are 30" deep. The rest are pretty close I believe.

Door on the far garage will be 14 x 14.

Door on the close garage will be 12 wide by 14 high.

Floor will be 5 inches.

First concrete truck just showed up. I figure they will have this poured by 8am.

Garage floor is done..... Workers showed up a little before 6 this morning, first truck showed up about 6:15. Three trucks total. Pour done by about 7:30, and the workers spent the next 4 hours screeding and smoothing. Looks really good.....

Not sure that is in the budget. Definitely want to do some sort of seal on the concrete when the garage is done though.

Come by any time buddy....

Ha ha..... we were finding your "love notes" for a couple of weeks after our big move in party.....

I asked Charlie the same thing. He said that sometimes those blocks float up, and then the rebar is too close to the surface and causes a crack. What these guys did was have about 4 of them with big prongs go along and lift the rebar matrix while the concrete was being poured so that it was off the ground

Hey Scouter, what are the short concrete walls called and what is their purpose?

Those are called "strong walls". they are the base of the walls to the entry doors. There will be more hardware bolted to them during framing and I will get pictures. It's all part of the new requirements by Yuma County for building codes.

Each of those 4 walls has 2 bolts that are set in the concrete all the way down to the bottom of the footings. Each bolt is 5 feet long, and probably 1 1/4 in diameter.

Our current garage doesn't have these, as it was built before the new requirements. Our neighbor's RV garage does have it though. Once done, you won't be able to tell they are there as they will be stucco'd along with the rest of the garage..

Thank you, I've heard the terminology, now I have a picture to go with it. [emoji6]

That belongs to my neighbor Bill. I've never seen the inside of it, but apparently Bill has it set up as kind of a museum. He used to live here full time, but family issues took him back to San Diego. Now he only comes out about once a month....

OK, the framers started on Monday and have made some good progress. Most of the framing is done and lying on the floor of the garage. The contractor's Pettibone ("The BONE" as Charlie calls it) is down (some broken part on the joystick) and they need those to raise the walls. Hopefully it will be fixed today. Stainless asked about the strong walls. You can see the rest of the materials for those in these pictures. Those pre-fab deals bolt to the top of the concrete walls via those 4 foot long bolts I mentioned earlier. It's a super windy day here today, so they have these things supported pretty good.

Also, the trusses were delivered yesterday and are sitting in front of my neighbor's house, so once they get the walls up, the trusses will go in rather quickly.... :thumbsup

I can't tell from the pictures Scouter but are they both separate garages with a solid wall in between?

They are separate garages, but with a walkway in between. If you look at the 2nd picture I posted yesterday morning with Charlie's back to the camera, you can see the opening between the 2 garages. It starts right at the strong wall for the shorter garage. My plan (I emailed Zack yesterday but no response..... :grumble: ) is to mount my TV on that strong wall such that it can rotate between the 2 garages so I can view it from which ever garage I am working in...

One garage is for my Advantage is the other is for scouter's Advantage :D

Only if I can use yours...... :D:p

Well it's been a month, so time for an update.

We had a minor delay. Of all things, it took nearly a month to get the windows. The garage has 3 windows, all the same size and orientation. They are standard sized windows, but since we wanted them to match the windows on the house, they had to be special ordered..... :grumble:

Anyway, windows are in, man door is in, electric is in, lathing is done and yesterday they installed the insulation.

Next is an insulation inspection and then they start drywall. Drywall is supposed to be dropped today...... :thumbsup
