We've got a couple of new AV projects going on and figured I would post up some pictures.

First one is a new house up on Mt Helix in San Diego. It's an 11k SqFt house and will be getting a full automation and control system.

It's getting:
15 TVs being distributed 12 central Video Sources as well as the ability to pull a source from a wall plate in each room
21 Audio Zones
11 AC Zones
Full 7.4.2 Atmos Enabled Theater
Pool Control
Irrigation Control
Lighting Control
Fireplace Control
Security Cameras
Gate Control
Video Intercom
Automated Shading
12 Flush Mounted in Wall touch Panels

We are just now getting started on the project, but it's already pretty interesting :)

The 4 secondary bedrooms are all pretty much the same, a TV, 2 in ceiling speakers and an in wall subwoofer. I'll get some pics of the details they are doing on the ceilings. Each room has a different detail :thumbsup
IMG_1730.jpg

These are the mounts we are using in the bedrooms and throughout much of the house. They are an articulating mount that flushes back into the wall. The backs of the TV's will sit against the surface of the wall providing the flattest mount possible.

So the theater is a little bit of a bummer. When we first showed up on site, the theater looked like the picture below.
IMG_1715.jpg

There was a little bit of a miscommunication and the framers framed up the seating riser, soffits and columns. Unfortunately, to properly acoustically isolate the room we have to decouple the drywall from the framing using clips and hat track. In order to do that, all of the framing has to be pulled back off the walls and the riser has to be cut 3" from each side so we can get the proper bracketry in place. I'll take more pics as this process plays out as I think people will find it interesting.

That's freaking awesome, best time to integrate all that stuff is when you're down to the studs

I know a bit about audio, but the whole-home integration is pretty new to me, can't wait to get a house and get that stuff installed and working.

I'll definitely try to keep this one updated.

Here is what the theater looks like right now. Framers and plumbers were bummed... And they still have to cut out the sides of the riser. :(
IMG_1736.jpg

Here is the living room with the doors put in. They will be hiding these inside a false wall.
IMG_1738.jpg

Finally got our flush mounts for the touchpanels
IMG_1746.jpg

They will look like this once installed. Drywall mud will flush out with the mount and it all gets painted to match.
IMG_1747.jpg

Here is the house I was at today. 20k SqFt in Rancho Santa Fe. Just helping a buddy of mine with the network on this one. :thumbsup

Here is the theater's current state. You can see it will be pretty simple in regards to design (just a box with some soffits) but it should make up for it with sound and video. :)

You can see the clips and channels that are used to acoustically decouple the inside of the theater from the rest of the framing. This allows us to run the theater at reference levels while causing as little disruption to the rest of the house as possible.

Rack #1 started. This rack is just subwoofer amps and distributed audio amps. There will be vented blanks between all of the amps.

Surround sound zones run off receivers will be in another rack.

Very cool. Super interesting to me.

Could you post a wiring diagram? Not super detailed but are there wires headed off to every room from main point?

You probably won't be able to read this but I'll get a better one up. This is just our preliminary diagram for inputs and outputs.

Yes there is wire run out from the rack location to all the speakers, subs, TV's thermostats, shades, fireplaces, lighting control panels, pool equipment, irrigation equipment Etc etc etc. :)

Holy Guacamole, that's a shitload of cabling!

What happens when the drywaller or cabinet guy pokes a hole in one? Can you trace the bad spot easily?

Everything gets labeled? I picture me there with a roll of masking tape and a sharpie... :yikes

Will this all someday be wifi enabled and wireless?

A buddy of mine had something like this done at his custom place in Olivenhein. Stereo controls in each room. He could access his whole music library and play something different in each location. Mind Boggling.

I'm stoked just to have a B channel for my pool area speakers. LOL :D

It's not easy to figure out bad spots and at a certain point you are rolling the dice. We usually tone wires before drywall finish just to verify everything made it that far.

All wires have a custom label printed for them before wiring start pulling wire.

There is a touch panel in each room and each room will be an individual zone you can control. There will be multiple music streamers, Sattelite audio, cable boxes etc that will be accessible in each room.

Jeebus...Is multiplexing over few wires an option?

Having one wire that has but one signal to carry seems inefficient in today's digital age...?

We do. It's called HDBaseT. We have one cat6 wire to each tv that will carry 4K video and 7.1 audio as well as Ethernet, rs232, ir, and provides us an audio return path for 2.1 ch audio back to the rack. :)

That's about as good as it gets.

We do run 2 wires to the TV's though because HDBaseT (which I was describing above) takes all 8 wires of a cat6. A standard Ethernet connection for a camera or a touch panel etc only uses 4 of the 8 so we will only run one to each of those. Some guys run up to 5 cat5/6 to each tv...

That said you still need a wire to eac speaker and subwoofer. That is a huge portion of the wires.

Looks great, where's this place at?

The corner of Kettner and Juniper in San Diego. Opens up on 11/11.

It'll be open 7AM-10PM for all day chicken and eggs. We got to sample some of the sanwiches, they are bomb! Definitely try the blue grain cookies too and Eric the bartender is a champ :champagne:

Racks are shoehorned into their room. The racks are 6'6" to give you an idea :)

Looks pretty good. Except for using zip ties [emoji23]

You a Velcro fan? I much prefer zip ties over Velcro personally... All of these still need to be final laced so the zip ties line up

We are the only ones servicing this so the serviceability concerns are kind of moot. Too hard to get Velcro to look good imho.

Fully deadened front wall of the theater. The screen is acoustically transparent and the panels are wrapped in acoustically transparent fabric.

Put these shades in last week out at the river. Cuts the glare and heat down a ton. They are a 2% openness favors so only 2% of heat gets through but you can still see through. Pretty trick.

32' long 10' tall. Fully motorized and integrated. Once we got all our brackets leveled on the incredibly uneven ceilings it was smooth sailing. Still took all day to get two shades installed though :/

Wow those shades are really nice, impressive how much view you still have looking through them. Was this something you ordered and brought down to the river house or someone in the area build them?

We're a distributor and installer for them. The manufacturer is Polar Shades.

They are reasonably easy to install and we can drop ship anywhere or they have dealers around the country. I'll try and grab a video next weekend.

They're switches [emoji106]

Then we use keypads or our control system to control the switches. It's much lower cost than doing a traditional lighting control system and easier for the electricians to wire.

Also did this at Seaside Market in Cardiff last week. Those are actually 70" displays, just hard to tell the scale.

Lol. It's not too bad in a single story but yeah a two story is a bitch. Usually people do it during a remodel if it's a retrofit. [emoji106]

Holy shot that's awesome. What amps am I seeing in the lower part of that rack?

They look sorta like Crown, but I think that case design is shared with a bunch of MFR's...

There is a crown Cdi1000 in the top left that drives the front yard's awesome outdoor speaker setup. 4 70V landscape speakers and a 12" burial subwoofer.

The bottom right are Behringer amps that actually power the theater system. Lots of people talk down on them, but we have had great luck with the iNuke's for theater use. These things are just cruising playing reference level content.

Lots of people say the same about Crown, too :thumbsup
They're tough to beat for anywhere near their price.

Can you recommend a good quality outdoor speaker that is not going to brake the bank?
I'm thinking of running an amp and hooking Apple Airport to it for a stand alone unit in the backyard.

Yeah the price/watt is outrageous and we've found that as long as you're feeding them great input signal the output sounds great.

I wouldn't use them for dedicated 2ch music, but the price point makes them very compelling for HT and its crazy transients and levels :thumbsup

Where are you going to be mounting the speaker? Wall mount or putting it in a planter etc? What's the budget? Shoot me a PM if you want
