I thought that was you. I passed you coming out of the gate while you were waiting for your escort.

The other one just left about 45 mins ago.

Lol, i don't think they'd fly that thing over just for dignitaries, they had to be carrying some type of cargo over here, or charted to fly some type of cargo here in the US.

Those things cost $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to operate

That's the 'little one', the six engine is a bit larger, and both can 'squat down' on the landing gear to make drive thru loading easier. The four engine one comes into Tulsa now and then to pickup parts from some of the aerospace companies.

Every now and then they will be at Lindberg field to pick up Solar Turbine engine and compressor packages going overseas. Quite a sight to see coming over the city on that tight runway....takes every bit of it. When they spool them up for takeoff it rumbles the entire area and the blast deflectors on the west end don't help much. I was standing out on Laurel one day watching one take off and it was very impressive to say the least.

When Gorbachev was here a few years back that's exactly what they flew along with all the crap inside that you mentioned.

not dignitaries. they are cargo only. atleast that's their markings. I'm kind of wondering if maybe they brought European cars over here for the Anaheim auto show. isn't that happening right now??

Yeah if their is cargo on the plane then no doubt they may carry a small passenger payload. But they aren't flying that puppy empty for joy rides, it would bankrupt the Russian government :D

That thing doesn't move unless there is some really big cargo going in it. The company I was working for in Afghanistan used it a few times. We had a contract come to an end and had to move some Sikorsky S-61's from Kabul to Dubai for storage, it wasn't cheap. Right about a million dollars a pop to go from Kabul to Dubai, that's a 2.5 hour flight. So, it ain't cheap by any stretch, but it's the only show in town to move shit that big. Govt won't contract out any C-5's unless it's in direct support for Govt missions or interests.

they only fly when loaded. Flights are planned and scheduled around the cargo and destination. They are never empty. Crews lay over and wait for weeks at a time. I hear stories of when they are in the states, the crews go to costco and other similar places and spend thousands of dollars on stuff they cant get anywhere else. Those two have been there for a couple weeks. They are the little planes. When the big monster comes it is quite impressive.

All I know is when Gorbachev was here a few years back he flew in on one of those big MoFo's, saw it and saw him get off. What else was in the plane I have no clue and neither do either one of you. I did see when Gorbachev departed the plane there was a lot of armored vehicles in there as well, not sure if just for his use or not. Obviously cargo is in the planes as well.

With all your pull go down to Guardian Air, south-side of the runway and take a look, that's where the Antanov was parked when Gorbachev was here. If he's there ask him to show you his W2's, tell him Phil said he would. Jim Previti SR, JR will as well.

... Not sure if this is still in effect but a friend of mine from New Zealand used to go into stores and buy stuff he would fillout a form and didn't have to pay sales tax if he was taking it out of the country...I wonder if that still applies with these crew guys going to Costco ???...

I was just reading about this on line. they spend 3 to 500 a day to park at ontario till Their next load. this was in a story from 2013. it's cheaper to stay parked then to fly it somewhere else or to home base till the next load.

This ^^^^^. They have a crew of about 20, including a cook. Apparently, Levi's are very poplular in Russia.
It's just a layover.

I'll try to find out about Gorbechev.

yellow service truck??

Yeah that was me. I thought "that guy looks familar" and wasn't paying attention to what you were driving. I forgot you had a green truck and then it clicked.

"Janet" doesn't operate 747 models. AE&G (or whoever it is now) has purchased some newer 737s lately.

There are two private livery 747SP's that fly out of Vegas but they belong to one of the Casinos.

Years ago when I was a kid my dad had his Airplane Instrument business on the north side of the airport near the old MD, LM, hangars, in the end row of buildings close to Grove Ave. I use to run rampant around those big hangars, I'd even sneak across the runway to my dad's buddy's shop Well's Aircraft. I loved being at the airport, usually there from 7AM-4PM every Saturday when I was a kid.

Yes, for the evil empire (LAWA). :D

Is the building your dad's shop was in still here? The 2 of the 3 Wells hangars are empty, and the 1 is occupied by the contracted ramp crew co.
I know the changes I've since 97 and could only imagine what it was like back then.

We were putting together a museum about the airport. ALOT of old pictures and really cool stuff from WAY back.

I don't believe those old buildings are still there, I think they went bye bye along time ago. Wells either sold or just retired years ago, once my dad died back in 2003 I had no reason to go down there anymore.

When my son was young he and I would grab ice cream and go just past Hofer Ranch up Archibald I think and you could park right on the runway fence, but then 9/11 happened and that was over. He and I would lay under the stars for hours watching planes land and take off.

Is your job safe with Ontario taking over? I hope so.
