In Progress upgrade, going to upgrade in about a year to a 250 or 300 XS and hydraulic steering. Has anybody ran a atlas jack plate on a Stoker, it works good, it looks like I have to run a cleaver stoker881 (2).jpg stoker883.jpg stoker884.jpg stoker882 (1).jpg stoker881 (2).jpg

If you get a chance and can post some pics of your interior that would be cool. Need to redo mine and really like the way stoker dos their seats.

Is that 225 on there now?
Engine is a XP200 and has been a great engine but it doesn't push the boat as fast as I want. I have done quite a lot to the boat for the summer, new:
1.VRO pump (didn't want to mix)
2.Optical sensor
3.Power Pack
4.Rebuild carbs
5.Seal lower unit
6.Transom Jack (learned a lot)
7. All new cables

Need to find out who has put in hydraulic steering on a Stoker, pro's/con's make etc..Heard SEA Star is good. I like how responsive the cables are but hate the torque.

I have installed Hydrolic steering in my stoker it was not difficult. I had a 225 promax on a 20.1 with the Seastar Hydrolic steering. I didn't feel ant difference from cable to Hydrolic response wise but it was awesome no torque steer. :thumbsup

Thanks for the info. Did you do it yourself, I've seen videos on installation and it doesn't seem difficult.
Thanks

It is easy. Just take your time and be sure everything is tight. Be cautious the first trip out, and double check everything afterwards.

Bad things happen if steering fails!

I asked Al Stoker about that a few years back and he highly advised against it....Said the 505lb motor was to heavy for the 20.1
Didn't he hang the 300 V8's on there? If I recall, they are around 500 lbs as well.

The V8,s were on the 22sst.....

I remember a few years back a board member attempted a 300xs on a 20.1....They tried everything under the sun to make it work yet were unsuccessful.....They ended up pulling the motor off...selling the boat...

If you go on the Stoker fan page on FB....Al made a comment on this topic not long ago...

Yes, the 250 and 300XS is going to be super heavy for the 20'. I know of a 300PM on a 20' that works ok, but he has put in a ton of time on setup and has gone on a serious weight saving program to make it work. He found a slightly cut down Bravo 1 prop with custom vent holes to be the best all around prop. The XS will be worse.

Cleaver props are really bad news on these hulls, no matter how much weight you have back there. The boat will be completely unstable when it starts to pack air.

Oh, the sea star system is easy to install, but you may have to cut some bracing under the bow to get the helm to fit. Best thing you can do to your Stoker, regardless of power amount. Take your time bleeding the system. Or, get it all rigged and take to a shop and have them use the power bleeder. Best way to go.

The XP 200 is 450lbs vs the Mercury 250/300XS is 505lbs......I am wondering how 55lbs will make it unstable?
Those evinrudes were that heavy? The Merc 2.4L carbed motors are just under 400# (380 I think?). I can't imagine 55lbs doing that much to disrupt the weight balance. That's about the same as adding an extra battery.

The XP 200 engine parts are become hard to find (Try finding engine cowling parts) as well so engine replacement is going to happen. I checked Evinrude etec ho 200 weight.....if you guessed 505lbs you would be correct. The Opti Max 200 is 434 lbs but has only a 15 shaft. I could have the jack plate lowered and go with the merc 200 but when a Stoker is loaded up with 6 people, it needs a little HP to push it.....

If the primary driving factor for repower is the availability of replacement parts, I'd suggest a 2.4L or 2.5L Merc of whatever HP. Scream and Fly has a lot of motors in their classified section. Or there is a nice carbed 200 2.4L Merc in the classifieds here.

Weight is only part of the factor. The 3.0 and 3.2 Merc lowerunit shape works good on some boats not so much on others and while the 20.1 works good with the 2.5 lower unit it does not like the larger unit. Also todays jackplates with setback will move CG rearwards adding to the issue. When the boat was designed these engines did not exist, as new engines came out changes in the build/rigging were instituted to maintain good drivability which the 250XS, 300XS, X, promax and V8 dont allow. These engines are thus not reccomended, at 300 you are also over reccomended power.

Thanks for the info, I am either going to go with a 2.5 or find someone who can rebuild a hot, reliable Evinrude. How fast will a 2.5 run, when the engine was in its prime, I got 88 mph out of it. I see some of the youtube stokers with 2.5 and they run strong and I see Etec 250 ho on stokers, has anybody got any info on this setup......I would like a new trouble free engine.

My buddy's 20.1 with a 260 hp runs 92 right now. Still working out some stuff on setup but think should get 95-98 mph maybe? Like stated before heavy motors on the 20.1 although has been done probably isn't the safest route to go. Heck even my 224 with twins was very ass heavy and was weird at first to drive compared to a big single.

I went from twin cable to seastar pro hydraulic last year and would never go back. This is on a 18 foot Baker tunnel with a jack plate. I no longer need to wrestle the wheel. But still plenty of feel.

My buddy has a 18' Baker tunnel. Great boat! What motor do you have on yours?
