Our 3 month old started spitting up blood today. First we thought it might be from the breast milk because Bre has been having some clogged duct issues and I guess the irritation could lead to blood entering into the milk which is not a HUGE deal. Well when Bre went to pump, there was no blood in the milk. Our 2 year old is in bed and family is 3 hours away so, I'm sitting at home while she took Bailey to the ER. The closest Hospital in Templeton doesn't have a pediatric unit so they had to discharge her and send her them down to Sierra Vista in San Luis Obsipo. We're really hoping it's irritation from her acid reflex that is causing the bleeding and can be relatively easily treated. If they can't diagnose it easily in San Luis, we have to go to Valley Children's in Madera for them to scope her. Anybody got any tips for dealing with when your kid has a possibly significant medical issue?

Ugh Scary. Unfortunately sit, wait and hope it's something minor is all you can do. Be thankful she took the baby at night so your 2 year old doesn't have to feel the stress as much. Prayers for your baby...reflux can be tough. Sierra had it and unfortunately my breast milk was the biggest irritant being so thin. Once I hesitantly switched her to formula things got much easier for her.

Anytime its your kid its tuff. Especially an infant.
Take it from a veteran, just try and stay out of your head.

Hang in there. Remember, this is really scary for you because it is the first time it has happened to your child/you. 99.9% of the time it is something the doctors are familiar with and it is pretty much business as usually for them. Right now your job is to keep a clear head, listen to the doctors and understand what they say, and comfort your child.

DO NOT start googling your child's condition. You will end up thinking that she needs a head amputation.

As a parent that had our 1st son at CHOC for over 3 months with a life threatening condition I agree 100% with what was said earlier...stay off of Google. I never looked up our son's condition and still haven't to this day. Talk to the Drs. develop a trust with them...ASK QUESTONS if you are not satisfied with the answers ask more if you still don't like it ask for a 2nd opinion. This is your child and if you are no 100% comfortable no one else will speak up for you. Try to be patient and be calm and strong for your wife and child and don't be afraid to take a knee and pray. I will keep you guys in ours.

Some of this is excellent advice. :thumbsup

But, if you don't get what you want from the docs, do not be afraid to use Google! We would have never known what direction to go with our son, if we had not had the internet. He would still be in a wheel chair with no answers in sight.

Stay calm. Kids are WAY more resilient than we are!!! They can, and usually do, recover nicely. Stick with the docs advice as long as you can.

Best of luck to your clan!!!

So I said not to use Google but what rivermobster wrote more accurately describes how I feel. If you have some persistent condition that you dont feel is being properly addressed by the doctor, then definitely seek more info.

My advice was more like, don't use Google every time something happens because it will only amplify the panic. The docs know how to treat 99.9% of the issues. 99.9% of the time your job is to keep a clear head, listen to the doctors and understand what they say, and comfort your child.

The reason I say that is they knew what he had immediately and had a plan of attack, we had stats, facts, figures and knew the potential outcome. I didn't want to get my head more tangled up than it already was. I would have searched if they had no answers...I guess I should have clarified that.

Thanks guys.so far they have only X rayed her. When Kara woke up and came into our room she was really confused where mommy and sister were. The hardest part is that I can't be there right now so I'm relying on third hand info.

Well it's sounding like we have the best case scenario here. The doctors are saying it appears to be caused by her acid reflux. They are doing an additional contrast x-ray to ensure her GI tract is functioning correctly and her intestines aren't twisted or anything.

It is a helpless feeling when one of your children isn't well and you don't know what's wrong.. Extremely stressful, where it's all you can do to hold it together.

Well the contrast X-ray appeared to indicate an issue with her intestines. There appears to be a constriction in the small intestines. They just finished an ultrasound to verify and we're waiting on the results.

My oldest was the same age when we learned she would need heart surgery. Her first of three before age 12.
I know the worry and helplessness you feel.
Coffee was my friend.
If they send you to Valley how far is it from home?
If (and let's hope not) you end up there for a procedure and its farther from home than you care for check out Ronald McDonald house. I'm pretty sure there's one close to Valley.
They were a great help to us. One of the few charities I contribute.
Thoughts are with you and family.

Well after this last round of ultrasounds they are sticking with the initial diagnosis of the bleeding being caused by her acid reflux. They are keeping her overnight for 1 more night just to be sure but she hasn't spit up any blood all day.

We broke the rules and snuck in last night. Bailey immediately gave all of us a HUGE smile when she saw us. They are being released today but they think there is something going on that isn't allowing her to empty her stomach and thus causing the excessive spit up. They are going to do a consultation with a Neurologist during the week to explore any neurological explanations.

She doesn't look happy in this pic but she was smiling almost the entire time we were there.

And now she gets to come home so she's happy again.

Last night was a hard night for Bailey. She was obviously in a lot of pain and nothing was helping. We had an appointment for the 10th for a consultation with a GI specialist and to do some imagining since they belive her stomach isn't emptying to her intestines properly. We after last night we called her doctor this morning and told them this needs to happen much sooner. They spoke to the specialist at Cottage hospital in Goleta and it was decided to do it sooner we need to go down there tonight and have her admitted so she can get everything done ASAP tomorrow. We're keeping our fingers crossed that they determine its just something she'll grow out of.

Thank you everybody for your support and encouragement. The GI specialist reviewed all the tests and imaging and feels pretty confident that the bleeding was from the excessive spit up and that her GI tract is just fine. Bailey may be sensitive to milk and so now Bre is being put on a dairy free diet to see if that helps with the acid reflux. The good news is it all appears to be something she should grow out of in a few months.

Sweet...both my boys can't do dairy in their formula. We use Earth's Best soy...get it at whole foods...you can also try Enfamil Prosoybe that is soy based

She's 100% breast fed. Thank God. I don't think I could afford the cost of formula from Whole Foods. We aren't all big ballers like you Lynch. Lol!
