Sister in law got some crazy idea from pinterest about making a bed for her son made out of steel pipe and fittings. She said her and her husband spent the better part of a weekend trying to figure out how to get it assembled. So she brought it over and I said hell with that, its mig time. Reason being, tightening up one side, means loosening the other. Theres no way in hell that thing would ever go together as-is...
Every project begins with a trip to the depot... she was missing a few items
Next I welded a small steel bar to the side of the side pipes for the wood pieces that would eventually hold the mattress to sit on.
I assembled the frames as far as they would go by over tightening one side and then loosening it to thread it into the other side, making the exposed threads even, and then tack welding everything together.
Lastly I took some extra U bolts I had from my trailer re-do, and welded them to washers, then welded the washers to the ends of the long cross pipes. Drilled a hole in the fitting it was supposed to connect to, and bolted it all together.
Cut the strapping to length and used some ribbon and staples to hold em together so they stay in line.
Sanded everything down, wiped with acetone (pipe has grease all over it) Painted it up with some metallic paint I had laying around.
All done!
