So I needed a new atlernator on my 96 Searay 220 Merc 7.4. The atlernator is located under the power steering, you can barely see it down there. So I stuck my phone in and took a pic of the info tag. I then looked up a replacement Alternator and Saturday I went to installed it. Well I tore it all apart and got out the factory alternator. Problem is it had 4 wires hooked up, my new one only has 3. The fourth looks to be a Trio wire?, I have done some poking around on the net and it seems this is used if you leave the key on, it cuts the amp draw that would be pulled by the alternator. It also lets the alternator spin freely while you start your boat, because it cuts the amps that the alt itself pulls before it is spinning and producing power.

My question is #1, is what I just typed correct? Am I understanding this right?
#2 do I need to buy a different alternator that has a location for a Trio wire? Or just run it without?

My research says I will be fine without it but I am not an expert and I value other opinions.
