This one is rackin my brain, I have a 1977 Spectra 24 XS and it is going to get a redo and the ace champion gear box is in the boat now. I came across a casale out of a 18ft sanger. It was a good price so i bought it. Thinking that i wanted to use it in my boat. Now rumor has it that the c-500 is the better way to go. The question is do i stay with stock, can it handle a 489 chevy and a 400 trans and if i split the cases to see if it is good is it going to leak? 2nd install the casale out of the sanger? 3rd sell both and go with a c-500? Ive never had this boat in the water seeing as i bought it with a blown motor and trans. This boat is under construction for the past 3 years and looking to start workin on it again. My Damn house remodel is gettin in my way. Check out custom speaker hole that some :bang: cut into the boat!!!! :bash: Any opinions will be appreciated.

Thanks TURBO350R

Me thinks that the 'speaker' hole is/was a compass hole. Boat may well have been an early Catalina racer (before GPS) and you had to 'find' the island.

Many will have opinions on the v-box. I have a C-500 in my Howard 24 (a splash of your hull) and think its a great v-drive.

Is the Kleenex box there to wipe your eyes from the excessive speed?

Carl

Never seen a full bench seat in one of these. Any more pix of the interior and layout?

Nice boat, you're gonna love it!

I think your right about the hole in the dash its for a compass.
The seat in that boat is a 3/4 bench with a built in cooler on top/middle.
I had one with that seating.

A Casale V-drive is the only way to go.

The Champion is a very quiet box and from what I have read and heard about them... a good box. Rebuild the champion and spend a couple hundred if you have issues down the road pony up for the c500. I bought a used / rebuilt C500 from Rex Marine a few years back and spent $1600 pay for the confidence of getting a good box when dealing with the C500 many people have screwed these boxes up rebuilding them, lash has to be right and many people don't do it. I am using a Champion in my rebuild, not running crazy horse power, when I do go with a bigger motor (650hp+) I will be changing to a C500

This is funny!! I new that last pix would give me something to laugh at.:D Being that im in the glass business i used silicone to hold that Kleenex box down. We were doin some heavy duty payment racing that day. I guess i should not have been so mean about the hole, but i hate holes in these classics, but i understand why. The bench seat was there and now its gone, it was so big that there was no room between the motor cover and the back of the bench, i do have pix though. As far as trailer brakes the last owner had a situation and removed them after the were damanged and decided that he didnt need them. :grumble: It was a white nuckle drive from vegas bringin her home. I called casale and since they rebuild all drives they said they would take a look at it. His answer was to run the champion. Good drive and can handle the power im putting to it.

Thanks Turbo350r

I brought my 270 Hallett back from Mead on a weekend. The prior owner said the brakes were fine. My bad I get home with brake dust all over my F-350 and wow no brakes. Add another 500 dollars to the price! Stops better now!

I wonder why they put that cav plate actuator way up in the front of the boat like that?

Oh, and while you are de-rigging, check the gas tank material. If fiberglass (like my Howard :grumble:) you may as well cut 'em out now and replace with stainless or aluminum.

Ethanol mix in gas is eating up fiberglass. Messy job but if needed, do it now!
