These are from the mid to late 70s. My younger brother was the mechanic/engine builder and part time driver for th GN 37 boat.

Some of these pictures are from Walker Lake. If you would like more info on these pics, go to: http://home.earthlink.net/~jengle37/index.html

Thanks for posting. Remember Mitch Lempke of Speed & Marine. You had a few photos of Mitch's boats that he drove. Mitched rigged my dad's 20' Schiada for ski racing in '79.

May I ask who is your brother? The pic's you posted are mostly from John Engle's site. John is the one who helped identify which Palm boat I found(in a field). The last pic you posted is the boat I restored...GN 76.

Any more pics or information on the gold #37 boat? Is it still around? I've heard a lot about that boat...when did you guys stop racing it?

It's kinda cool to see the "evolution" of Gn boats---thanks for posting that

Dekman, John Engle is my younger brother.
369, what I understand, is the gold Mandela was retired in the late 70s and it is being stored in a garage. I don't know where though.

Well that's crazy! Been trying to reach him for years. Could I get his Email or phone # from you. He helped me a great deal with my resto of Rampage GN 76. Thanks, Rob

Since there is some interest, here are a couple of stills of Doc Cannan's Mandella the "Inlay" grabbed from old movie film of the 1969 Parker 9 Hour, shot by Walt Barker according to Carson Brummett. Excuse the quality of the images, will have to see about getting the video uploaded.

Spoke with your brother John today...thanks for connecting us! He said he was a member of Dr. Cannan's crew and worked on Inlay GN37 #2 (the Palm version). He said Dr. Cannan still has both boats( mandella and the Palm) and will not part with them!

Regarding my boat (Rampage #3)....."Having BEEN THERE during the development of the Palm boat, I can say with confidence that the hull was modified from a 21 ft Conquest. Hull design was done entirely by Bob Palm, Joe Poty, and John Poty (father and son). The Potys had their own boat company before, and the design of their boats influenced yours. The Conquest was so heavily modified it was unrecognizable. The line on the dash of yours is unique, Palm wanted to have one that was a little different. "

"The decks on #1(TinCan),#2(Inlay), & #3(Rampage) are all slightly different in the cockpit area. He toyed with design each time." I worked with John Poty, Ray Barrett, and Johnny Waddell on #2(Inlay) and #3(Rampage).

"The majority of the difference from the conquest is the bottom. Only about 5 of us knew the science involved. Suffice it to say that at 90+ mph..... that hull has less drag than any other semi v that was available at the time. There is a certain way to race it, as far as cornering and straightaway that make it faster and more stable. I assume that Bob(Palm) passed the info on to Teague because he won the championship with it.

I have no idea where TinCan ended up, but Cannan still has The Inlays.

You have quite a boat there! Have fun with it!"

John

I also sent him a link to the thread on my boat...which has alot of discussion(arguing) on the history/orgin of these v-drive hulls(who copied what from who).

Very cool info, thanks for posting! Awesome to hear that the #37 Mandella "The Inlay" still exists somewhere in good hands.

Another marathon Mandella "Inferno" ran the #37.

Inferno was Red Adair's boat (you can even read that in the ad). He was famous for fighting oil rig fires,, and Carson Brummett could often be seen wearing one of his hard hats at the races.

I didn't know Red Adair raced a boat. Thanks.

Back in the 60's, marathon boat racing was huge. Prize money was unbelievable if converted to today's dollar, and there were a number of celebrity type drivers,, astronauts, race car drivers, a president's son, etc.

There was an Elvis Presley movie in the 60s which involved a marathon circle race in Miami. I can't remember the name of the movie

Still enjoy watching Elvis and the boats in "Clambake."

John Engle sent me some pic's of Doc Cannan's newly purchased Palm "INLAY" prior to rigging.

An if you look very closely at the center boat...you will see a GN76 which is my boat "Rampage!" I just discovered this......Thank You John!!! This is the first and only pic I have of my boat competing.

And this is apparently the real "Robert Palm" with a 76 on his sleeve..

Awesome pics---awesome thread. Would be great to see movie clips of those old Enduros!!

It's good to see something other than "R" boats running GN. Like that inboard Daytona next to the 76 boat in the Havasu pic. Same class maybe?

I'm digging the windshield on the Palm...how its integrated in the dash. Those boats do look to ride very flat...and fast.

Here's a pic of the windshield... screwed/bolted on the inside lip. Bottom pic is the inside of Bob Teague's dash.

The pic's are from Walker Lake...not sure where that is.

Yes...Teagues boat is dialed in and fast. He runs 85 to over 100 in the Parker Enduro and the water is not smooth! :eek

In Nevada, southeast of Reno. Last time we ski raced there I recall the small casino in Hawthorne. Apparently the water level is way down to a record low now.

Hello, I'm John Engle, brother to the guy who started the thread. I crewed and built engines for Doc Cannan for several years. I spent many, many hours working in this beautiful Mandella. Any possibility of getting a copy of the video?

I looked through all the pics I had and this is the only one I had of Duke's boat. It is from a race at Puddingstone.

I don't have a lot in the way of pictures, mostly because I spent more time turning wrenches rather than holding a camera. The boat still exists I hope to restore it one day if I can talk Doc into it. We stopped racing it around 1977 or 1978 I think, when the new boat Bob Palm built us was ready.

I'm thinking the inboard Daytona was running CJ class that day. At Walker, and with most of the races then GN, CJ, and ET ran together

I don't think it's a problem, but I don't own the rights to it. Carson Brummett loaned me a copy since my dad helped his dad out with the boat. Carson tells me it was movie film shot by Walt Barker.
