Dad's Boating Pix circa 1968, Lake Powell

So, in the previous thread we went from 1961 up through 1967.

This year, (1968) Pops took all of his vacation at one time and we spent a month at Lake Powell. Started out going to Powell through Zion Nat'l Park and ended the trip going through the Grand Canyon.

This first trip to Powell, the lake was filling and the hike to Rainbow bridge was about 2 miles.......many years later you could boat nearly to the bridge.

Lots of skiing in the Wahweap area......

Couple of thoughts/comments, the first couple of pix show the camper. Check this out, 1962 Chev 1/2 ton, bed removed and 10' chassis mount camper installed. 235 cid 6 cylinder with three on the tree. Throw a 16' boat, 5 people and gear for a month, what do you think that weighed in at? He was down into 1st gear pulling out of Zion, told me to watch for a turn around spot in case it quit pulling.

The black and white Glasspar G-3 (14'r) powered by a 65 Merc had 5 people in it with overnight gear. When in the narrows, the tour boats would throw a 4-5' wake, Chuck told his girls to hang on and he cleared the wake, boat flew about 7' in the air.

Very cool. One day I'll go through my parents photo albums and scan all our old river and Powell photos from the 70's and 80's.

'68 was the first year my parents took us kids to Powell 2 weeks. We may have even crossed wakes way back then.

Dredging up an old thread! My pops took me on this same trip and we saw a lot of the same things you posted here! Its awesome how similar my memories are, yet slightly different. Thanks for sharing and taking me back to some good memories!
