Thank you! I just have a 496HO with a Bravo 1X drive. Seems like that's how they were making most of them at the time. Love the boat but wouldn't mind a bit more power.

I hear ya, I would like more power too. I have a 502 MPI with a bravo 1. Extra HP isn't cheap. I would need a beefier drive and external steering. Although I do love the reliability of a merc motor. My 502 has just over 600 hours and still runs strong.

Something to be said for reliability! 600 hours - nice. Looks like you use your boat!

Here's mine it started life with a 496 as well. Then I put a Whipple on it and the boat was a blast to drive and it really came alive. After 3 years with the Whipple I wanted a bolt prof motor as my 496 was stock and I did not bowl it up it was cheaper to sell the motor and build a custom Merlin 572. With the weight savings from motor to motor and the 572 has at least 100 more ponies the boat runs into the mid 80's with a light load. Once you have some power in the heats you will never go back. But you are right it all comes with a price. Nice looking boats boys!!

Nice ride! Thanks for sharing.
I've heard the heats can take a lot of power. Are you running a drive spacer? The guys over on OSO with heats and good power all run 1" spacers cause the x dim is too shallow on the step hull heats.

Yep I got the spacer. My boat ran good, with good slip numbers with a p5x and the Whipple 496 (12%to 13%). After the motor swap the boat sat in the water exactly 1" higher than before. I believe that I cut about 400 pounds out if the motor with no close cooling and aluminum heads and all the other stuff the 496 has on it. With the spacer it brought my slip numbers back to the 12% to 13% range. My boat came with hydro steering and an xr drive. It ran low 60s with the 496. 75 all day long with the Whipple 496. 80 all day long with the best of 84 with the Merlin 572. It's a fun boat that is very dialed in. I'm looking to make the step to a cat someday but the market sucks right now and I will not give my boat away. It takes a lot of money to play with them and make them go faster. The one thing I have learned that I still will not take back is if you want a faster boat buy one already done with the motor and drive the way you want it and you will be thousands ahead. That being said I have had a ton of fun with the boat and learning more and more about motors and building boats.

Thanks Brayden

I've heard those 496s are heavy. 400 lbs lighter is incredible. How much more HP you making with the new motor?

Well it is hard to say because I have not had the motor on dyno to give real world numbers. What I do know is the 496 comes stock with 425hp. Whipple claims to make 625 to 650??? With those numbers and the performance gains from the boat (400 less pounds in weight is going to make some gains as well) I fell the motor makes a solid 700hp?? But like I said it has never been on a dyno.

Nice little hot rod,I had one just like it that was yellow with the wood paneling on it. Very mild 454. I had a ton of fun with that boat.

Its a 1985, 22' . Pretty stock 454 with a dominator jet with all the goodies. I'd love to fix it up but for the cost of new gel and interior, I could sell it, save the money on the upgrades, and buy something bigger, newer, with an i/o. This was to get the feet wet so to speak.
