This will be a loooonngg on going thread, but overall I should be able to get pics of this deal from Start to finish to show how a bare hull turns into a running haul ass program. :)

Most people think that a good hull design is all you need and you slap power in it and go. CG is hugely important. Even a couple of subs can throw the boat off balance and create a porpouse, scrub speed, etc.. etc.. From my limited understanding 100lbs is 1 MPH.

This is now my favorite thread, 2 mfr that I highly admire coming together. If you don't my mind "girly" questions I have 2...maybe 3..:grumble:

CG? would that be center of gravity?
and do elaborate on the 100lbs for 1mph..please

CG is center of gravity. It is crucial to get the boat setup properly because if the CG is off, it will cause the boat to have an improper attitude while running. This is why many offshore race boats push the motors forward in the boats and use drive shafts instead of coupling the motor directly to the drive.

Weight definitely impacts speed. With less weight, it is much easier to push the boat through the water. Race boats typically have very light lamination schedules. Placement of the weight is also extremely important. If you overload the nose with weight, it won't want to pick the nose up with speed. If you have all the weight on the tail, it will often put too much of the boat out of the water.

A little Schiada "flair" to the install.. Of course they would do rail kits and motor plates etc.. After all it is a Schiada even if it does say something else on the registration. ;) Mock up motors and beginning to make the mounting hardware.

(note the LED's on the transom BTW)

Hey Dave
Beautiful boat. Sorry if I’m confused here by the name, but is this a joint venture build or what’s the story.

Hey Dave
Beautiful boat. Sorry if I’m confused here by the name, but is this a joint venture build or what’s the story.

Schiada builds top of the line west coast boats.. A lot of guys from the west coast want a big cat to go haul ass in etc.. (Actually some people from the midwest and east coast will still have them build boats as well)

Since Schiada is one of the better "custom" rigging shops on the planet, the customers will often buy a hull and bring it to them to rig it to their specs. In some rare cases that will even include bringing a mold and having them build it from start to finish.

My understanding of it is there is No joint venture, but MTI is working with Schiada on somethings like "CG" etc.. Overall though Schiada will build this boat from start to finish, starting with a bare MTI Hull.

They build all sorts of crazy boats etc.. up at Schiada. Most people don't really know what they do up at the Van Nuys shop. That is Part of the mystique behind the company, becuase usually unless you got a wad in your pocket that could choke an elephant you really wouldn't get an opportunity to see this kinda stuff.

With their permission I'm pulling the curtain back ever so slightly to give us average joe Q public a chance to see what they do and what they can do.. ;)

Maybe SchiadaStan will chime in and answer some of these questions more clearly if I got any of them wrong.. LOL

Dave, what is the expected "rig" time by Schiada from the time they took delivery to the time it hits the water?

Interesting thread, was curious myself. Thanks for the explanation and kudos to Schiada for allowing it to be shared:thumbsup

Dave, what is the expected "rig" time by Schiada from the time they took delivery to the time it hits the water?

I have no idea.. LOl I gotta talk to STan today so I'll ask him. I'd expect about a year though? Maybe a little less? Nice shit takes time to build. I know their v-drives it's about a year.

Ironically enough the people that have boats built by Schiada have 2 things in common. # 1 They don't really care about price so long as it's the best. # 2 They don't really care about how long it takes.

It's interesting to see how different the company runs from any other boat mfg I have ever been around. I used to hear Jon West complain all the time about how fast he would have to build a boat on occasion. Or the customers complaining about how the boat was ready 2 weeks after they said it would be in most cases on HB, PB etc..

The guys that deal with Schiada don't really seem to be on any timeline.

Underwater Lights RD?

Yep.. This boat has a lot of "features" on it that you wouldn't normally see on boats like this (including big stereo etc..)

Here is a good example of Quality..

They were under the impression that when they built the motor plates they would have to only make clearance for one set of lines on one side. They built the plates and come to find out it needed clearance for something else on the other side as well.

They already relieved this plate so now it fits.. but the plate had already been polished and annodized. Most people would either have the anno stripped and re done.. Or some places would consider just powdercoating over the top of it to hide the 2nd operation.

Schiada takes the whole thing apart etc.. will be taking this plate off, junking it and building a new one. Nothin half ass in this place what so ever.

Is there a difference in the finish between stripped, re-polished, re-anno'd and new, polished, anno'd?

No personal experiance, legitimate question.:thumbsup

There could be a few reasons to simply start over... Stripping the existing off and redoing it isn't cheap and would most likely result in a slightly rougher final finish and might not have the look they consider acceptable. On certain aircraft components annodizing is not recommended as it (the acid and voltage) can cause a reduction in fatigue strength. Twice the amount of acid porosity and repeated charges in the part most likely won't cause a catastrophic failure of this type of part but if you are building something to be "perfect" it probably makes more sense to scrap the existing part and start fresh.

Check out the Chromic acid process (Type I) versus the Sulphuric acid process (Type II). Type I is more expensive but is considered more fatigue friendly. It might give you a little additional insight into why they are scrapping this piece.

Stan gave me some pics to update.. This boat will be ready for, Dessert Storm. :)

Someone asked how long this build will take.. Schiada is hauling ass on it, but to give you the exact dates they got this boat the week of the LA Boat Show.. I believe on Feb 8th. And it will be ready by mid April. (Pretty fast when you think about it)

Some of the updated pics. :)

These are the tilt tanks.. These tanks are hidden in the boat and are for when you tilt the boat on the trailer. Before the boat tilts they have to pump the oil out of the motors and into these tanks.. Otherwise when the boat tilts you'd have a hell of a mess on your hands.

I suppose it's something I never really thought about, but it'd be an expensive mistake to forget to pump the oil back into the motors before you lit em off.

Both motors are in the boat now.. One motor is 95% done, the other is about 80% done from what I understand.
