I have this Kimber Pro carry II that is showing a bit of holster wear, I'm thinking about having it re-done in a Duracoat finish. Has anyone had it done or know how well the Duracoat finish is?

Dura coat is not the best finish out there...The ceramic coatings such as cerra coat are tougher....The best I have ever seen is Black T....Walter Birdsong passed away last year, but his sons are carrying on his business. Everyone I know uses this process, and no one has ever been disappointed.

Gun cote, duracote, cerracote....I have tried them all...and have access to an oven at work, and actually sprayed cerra cote on some ar-15 mags which came out well...Google has a wealth of info on the opinions of people with respect to durability of different coatings....For my money Black t is the best...for me....just my 02..:p

    http://www.sandstromproducts.com/gun-coating-bullet-coating.html

We make aerospace/weapons coatings, most to mil specs. We are between one and ten miles from Les Baer, Armalite, Rock River Arms, Springfield Armory, Lewis Machine Tool and supply all of them. Just getting into the aftermarket sporting arms DIY coatings and started marketing the above coating. Just ask and I will send any of you a sample large enough to coat several guns.

I looked at their website. It seems that you have to send it to them and have them do it? Do they sell their product so we can do it at home?

Most of us don't have an oven so we have to resort to do-it-yourself at home or send it on the places like Black T

I have in my possession a sample of this that 69 1/2 sent me...I have not had a chance to use it yet, but the tech specs look pretty impressive...

    Great thread - thanks

I want to send my 870 Express out to have it coated as the factory "finish" isn't acceptable to me.

I started my tire kicking looking at Parkerizing and now I'm looking at these coatings which appear to be far superior.

Just talked to them (Robar) www.robarguns.com and OUCH!

My Remington 870 Express with their suggested coatings: Roguard on the outside and NP3 coating on the internals (no extra charge for both coatings).

    Price: $350
    Lead time: 4-6 weeks

I'm sure it's good and they guarantee the coatings not to chip, etc. for life of the gun but that's way too much $$$ compared to other companies' services.

I called Sandstrom Coating Technologies (www.sandstromproducts.com ) and talked to Jerri. She said they don't do any coating work - they only sell the coatings to companies who do it. I asked her for a local company and they don't have that information handy (!!!) so she'll call me back.

I contacted Black-T by email and got a rapid response:

Hi, we do refinish only metal parts. The "Direct" price for the shotgun is $185.00 complete internal and external metal parts + 2 mags. {if of course it takes mags} + tax & shipping.

We do have an order form on our website "black-t.com", print it and fill it out, send it with your weapon and we should have all the info we need.

Our turn around time is running about 8 weeks right now. If you need anything else please let me know.

    Thanks, Susan

PS: We do have 7 different colors now, only 4 are on the website (she emailed me pics of the 3 other ones).

Wilson Combat (Scattergun Technologies) - I contacted them today

    From their website:

ARMOR-TUFF Protective Firearms Finish was developed specifically for firearms use to provide a surface finish with optimum corrosion protection, abrasion resistance and lubricity. It permanently bonds to the surface of the firearm to form a barrier from acids, oils, paint remover, powder solvents, bore cleaners and other strong industrial solvents. The extremely low curing temperature (300 degrees) prevents possible damage to parts during the curing process. A firearm finished with ARMOR-TUFF? has the most durable, chemical and heat resistant, thermally cured finish available.

    $250 - outside surfaces

    about 6 weeks

Randy at RD Precision said he is too busy now to do work involving coatings only.

Just to finish up the info on coating companies...

The last one I checked with is Jim's Gun Supply in Wisconsin.

    www.jimsgunsupply.com

They offer a wide range of Duracoat coating colors and finishes (more than any other company I found).

They also will add most any item you want to your gun (they referred me to Brownell's site as one place to check out: www.brownells.com ) at no extra charge since the gun will already be apart.

They will coat just about any item including non-metallic parts.

And their price for the 870 Express is $150 - a very fair price.
