I have an old Plasma TV (78lbs + 18lb mount) that i was going to mount in my garage. Obviously the mount will be secured to the studs but is this too heavy? And would I need to use a fixed wall mount to keep the tv weight as close to possible to the wall? I want a swivel mount but worried that may stress the bolts/ studs a little much?

You'll be fine as long as they mount first extend more than a foot.

I've got an old plasma in my basement on a swivel mount and it hasn't fallen yet :).
Make sure you're mount covers 2 studs. I used 3 or 3.5" lag screws and made sure they were drilled into the center of the studs.

That old plasma's picture is as good as anything currently out there for watching a hockey game.

Ya the picture is great which is why I gotta keep her going. Thanks, I'll have to grab some 3in lags, I don't have too much faith in the ones the mounts come with.
Finding the studs is a chore all in itself. Never had any luck with a stud finder, i just verify where is should be with a pinhole and metal wire.

As long as the mount will support it you’re totally fine. Our big mouth swallowing 150 pounds 30“ off the wall

Just make sure you get a sturdy bracket, I have a 50" plasma on a swivel in my garage, the mount is from monoprice, it is not a single swivel, it has 2 arms that come out so it only turns about 45* but very solid.

As stated no problem with the right mount.
Better brands can support 150+ lbs up to. 28" deep.
Sanus, Omni, chief. Usually not the box store models, they are lighter weight.

I just bought one of the articulating mounts from Harbor freight fir my 65" LED and damn! That thing is VERY impressive. The mount itself has to weigh over 20lbs easy! To test it out i actually extended it out all the way and hung ny 220lbs fat ass from it. It didnt even blink. And for $40..... cant go wrong.

Not a thing. Except it doesn't have a digital tuner. Even comes with a mount

What inputs?
HDMI?

I had an older one I got from an RDPer - the plasma TV was heavy as shit - and the only high-def signal it could receive was RGB, which isn't supported anymore so the picture was never as good as it could be.
