I had a lot of money in my heads also. I'll have to dig up the flow numbers I had on them. I had 044's also. Not saying yours won't make good hp. Just saying what mine actually dyno'd at. I have the dyno sheet buried in the box around here somewhere. Sent from my iPad using Tap That Ass
Cool.....forgot to mention the titanium valves and the chevy springs.... I'd also like to add the fact that the 48s aren't exactly 48s either not to mention some other mods that will remain undisclosed.
I did say 48 Dellortos but, that is only what they appear to be on the outside. A good engine builder will tell you what is in the motor. A great engine builder will never tell you what is in the motor...
Not quite done but some new pics if you haven't seen them on GD. Only have some polishing and tuning left. Looking like New Years for the maiden voyage.
I have a buddy who just got a killer dyno in his shop...He wants to dyno my buggy and was working on the adapter for the motor. Is your car intact or, do you have the motor pulled? Just picked my car up last week. Dumont either this weekend or next for the shakedown tune to figure out the jetting.
The car was awesome! Duned with a few full travel cars that couldn't keep up. Here is the first run at St As. Shift linkage was needing attention but, I got it halfway close. On this run, 3rd gear was really tough to find so, the vid is mostly in 2nd gear. Handled like a slot car. Dropped the LS 1 car uphill like it was sitting still. Not for sale. Break in period is over. Needs to be jetted for 4k ft instead of sea level that's for sure as it was a little bit on the fat side.
Ah... I remember the mid engine days.....I had a 100" Sand Sprite IV with a fuel injected turbo SCAT Motor. When the thing spooled up it was a white knuckle ride and you couldn't keep the front end down. Good times back in the day! Cool Video!
Did you ever dyno it? Nice video, no 3rd gear? What kind of tranny are you running to harness this thing?
It has 3rd. I just had to finesse it. It shifts well now. Still haven't dynoed-never made it down to Glamis this year. ST As season is right around the corner. I was doing biz in Eastern Idaho today and cringing to be duning.
Very nice car, congrats. I love the old school rails. Simple, fast. St. A's is the best duning in the world, our first trip there was in 1989. We had the whole complex to ourselves during the week. We went every year for several years. This was my last sand car. Built by me an a friend from a pile of tubing. There is more than one way to skin a cat. You don't have to be light to run choke. Apply enough HP and get enough floatation and you'll do fine, better than fine, LOL. It was 1540lb with 4 gallons of fuel. 634 HP@7400 RPM. Mild tune. No No2. Single 4bbl carburetor. I put the kit on it to freak everyone out. Never filled the bottle. We tried to hit it with a 100 shot on the dyno and the water brake wouldn't load fast enough to read. The engine was good for 8500, all Crower rotating assembly. Dart 220 Spread-port heads, Crower roller, HVH intake, Braswell Carb, etc...
What do you have to get the drive to the axles? I've never seen a set up like this. Nice piece of work.
It used a Turbo hydromatic 325, a front wheel drive unit GM built for Eldorado/toronado/Riveria for 3 years. We machined the drive flanges down and mated them to VW Bus CV's and built our own other pieces. It was a labor of love, but the lack of cores would make it impractical today. My buddy owns a transmission shop, we were tired of exploding VW transmissions in our sand toys running big HP VW's and small water pumpers. While sitting around in his shop one afternoon after closing, a 12 pack appeared, and the wheels started turning. We built about 6 of these cars. We put as much as 850 HP to one of them, via a 414 blown Rodeck on alcohol. Mine seemed to be the perfect balance of weight and power and was the quickest and best handling. My back went to hell, the sand got rough, and it went away. I have no idea where it is now and don't want to know. Too much of my spirit went into that car. I did all the polishing myself, over 80 hours just in the trans case. There are over 600 1/8 inch holes drilled in the floors, countersunk to 3/16 in a palm tree/beach pattern. Brushed stainless floors, trimmed with polished aluminum. Over a month just prepping the floors.
Very nice, still curious if you can get 200+ hp with the 44's? I had the 48's to get the hp, but had to run short filters.
They aren't 44s. They are 51s. We can modify your 48IDA carbs to a 51.5mm butterfly, float chamber enlarged, modify secondary venturi and new larger Berg designed billet velocity stacks that provide 12% more flow than what others offer. We install factory Weber 3.0 high performance needle/seats. Originated by Gene Berg and Scott Bomar in 1977. Priced per carb. $772.20 $561.60 $561.20 LA CARB010 Sleeve to sleeve size $14.00 $104.00 $100.00 LA CARB020 Labor charge to profile butterfly and throttle shaft for a gain of 50 CFM per throat. Each carb. $357.50 $260.00 $260.00
That looks sweet! I built up a Scripion Sand Car, mid with a VW aluminum Frt end, 120" wheel base 2 seater bought most of my stuff at Fibertech in El Cajon, CA. Close ratio trans, 2276 built By Le Roy Hayes (Fast Company ) out of Escondido. I just loved to get the car in a 4 wheel drift, now that's some fun! This was back in the early to mid 90's, when Glamis was fun!
