Ryan,
here is a boat that is here in the NW, My dad rigged it, and it was region 10 high point champ in 1972 in the K class.

Anybody SURE there wasn't an Orange/Black checkerboard built? I seem to remember "toying" with one up @ Clear Lake CA. in about 1971 or '72. I think it might have belonged to a Trucking Company in the San Jose area.

We had a "dice" with the boat in my Wickens thru some pretty rough water in front of Lakeport. Seem to remember we ran pretty close to him, some "remarks" made, we went back to dock and got my Bud's Hallett (and a hundred bucks!) and went out lookin'. Found 'em, they wouldn't race the Hallett, even efter seeing the C. Hell, the Hallett was 15-20 mph faster than my Wickens!

I remember that day pretty well, I'm almost sure their boat was a Schiada!

Dave,
I think this is Bill Dunsmore Sr.'s boat Suddenly. I don't remember the name of his driver back then, but he held many records with this boat. He still has this picture on his wall at home. If you are interested I am sure I can get some more pictures next time I am out at Boulder. That was quite an engine he had in that boat.
Hope this helps.

Seems like one of you two guys could find out...Looks like the name on it is "Instantly",, falls right in line with the Suddenly boats? Someone can give Billy a ring and ask him?

Today at the Long Beach races I talked for hours with the Harper's who are truly great people with a real love of these boats. They mentioned a #57 boat named Suddenly. I forgot to ask about Instantly, maybe there were two boats?

I also learned today of some old Marine Stadium race footage that still exists on 8mm film which may have some of shots of these boats in action. I hope someday if it gets converted we'll be able to add em to this thread via youtube maybe? :thumbsup

Here's another photo of Psychedelic SS-82 not being a checkerboard.

Tom Mosier remembers it having a rootbeer brown target.

there was a yellow w/ orange (or red) checkers called Harry Canary

also a light blue w/ dark blue checkers that ran around w/ the group I grew up w/.

Also included the On to Glory boat, John is a personal friend of mine and very knowledgeable. There was a 4th Schiada flat but not a checker, black and gold w/ a "Nailhead" in it. I know the blue one and Johns are still around but the Harry Canary and the "nailhead" are not.

My dad has what is left of the Harry Canary, in Havasu. It was rode hard a put away wet. He was going to restore it, but has not gotten very far. Do you have any pictures of it back in the day?

Yeah somewhere! I remember watching it sink (slowly) on the anchor in front of Red Rock. Do you know if it was bought from the Rose family from the San Fernando Valley? Sadly that boat was not taken care of :(

I met a guy named Gene B. yesterday at McGoo's on Rice Road. This is his 77 v-drive Rayson Craft. He told me he was there when Leonard popped the first ones out of the mold and that he helped deliver one of the old Checkerboard Schiada's out to Pennsylvania back in 68 or 69.

So...maybe it's still out there?

The boat was sitting in a boat lot in Havasu for several years. it was stripped out and on a trailer. It was in sad shape, dad has taken all the rotten wood out of it and it ready to be replaced. That is as far as he has gotten. If you find some pictures I would sure be interested in seeing them. I do have a few parts out of the boat, but again most are in sad shape.

I just got a stripped 18' v-drive hull. It may be PSYCHECKELIC SS-82 or a paint design clone. The gelcoat is rootbeer, with the white paint over, leaving the design. It has a observers seat base. I thought about a checkerboard design with the name 'CHECKERED PAST'.

There is no number or name. There is rootbeer on the outside of the siderails. No design on the deck or dash.

There is a paint design on the deck. I could not find any trace of a name or race numbers. There are fiberglas fuel tanks bonded to the floors. This boat would be interesting to repair-restore.

Hey guys, I was just looking over this thread curious of the remaining checker boats. Love seeing all the other ones out there. My dad and I have a blue on blue checker that has been in the family for a long time. Right no we are giving it some "upgrades." The name of the boat is Wake Dancer and used to have a number 70 on it. So you can add it to the list. Let's see if the pic comes up.

Here is another pic of the boat at the river this year. I am curious, I heard of a blue checker in T.O. Could that be ours or is that another one people are talking about?

Thanks for the story and photos! I like your oldschool ski rack. I heard about your boat from John Villegas and Ryan(Warpt71). The white boat with blue checkers and back to back bench seats is in Thousand Oaks I believe.:thumbsup

Yes, my dad has been friends with John Villegas for a long time. We would always camp at Redrock every year with them. I always had an affinity for John's boat and later on Harry Canary came into our group. I was a bit young but I can't remember if we had all three boats in the water at the same time. Would of loved to have a picture of that. Have you heard or seen the brown on brown checker boat? Is that one of the boats listed?
