Hi all,

My Chinese vise is giving up the ghost. It's a basic 5" vise with a pipe jaw. The acme thread is galling in the nut and I figure it's really not worth dealing with.

Any takes on a 30 year vise as opposed to a 5 year HF?

Thanks,

When it comes to tools, I live by the buy once cry once philosophy.I have a vintage Wilton Bullet. Scored it for 250 at the local swap meet. Hands down one of the best vises out there

Oh and the HF speed and marine tools probably won't make it past 1 year

Out of curiosity I looked up the model number on it

Seeing pictures of vices I was reminded I was given one some time ago and has been sitting in the shop since. I believe you are local, you are welcome to it if you would like it.

It is a Rock Island No 593. It is a decent size vise.

Needs some TLC cleanup.

Story of my life.....a day late and a dollar short! :D

One of these days I will score a nice Wilton. But not until I have a garage worthy of it. Some day.....

(That was cool of you Brian to help a member out.) ;)

It might still be available, Lebel came by the shop today and said he wasn't sure he was going to use it. He decided he wanted a swivel base. Hit him up and ask.

Hi Guys,

I took Brians vise home, naval jellied it, wire brushed it, filed the hammer marks out of the slide, hit it with rust reformer, and painted it red...looks pretty good and lots of life in it. But like Brian said, it only goes on a bench parallel to the edge it attaches to, won't work in my shop, too small. I was gonna give it to my son, but if a member needs it let me know.

On the flip side I was looking at Vises and found a 5 1/2" Wilton enclosed on sale on Sears. com and they were $390, not $650. Should be here tomorrow.

This thread made me go to my parent's house and rescue this vise with the intention of offering it up. It seems like before I could do that, the problem was already solved. That is OK with me, as I have become somewhat attached to this 1997 Wilton. I have since gotten the foil decal and attached it. It is really smooth.
