  1. Lucas Oil Drag Boats World Finals 2013... In the eye of the beer-holder

    View attachment 597686

Typically when I write about my experience at a given event or trip of mine I try to give everyone who wasn't able to attend a front row seat to the festivities by telling a little story and adding some of my pictures to reinforce the words. This past week a friend of mine made a post about my photography in her Blog and it got me to thinking. I usually go about my...
  2. Road Trip to Burley my first trip to the "Idaho Regatta!"

Written by Barry Oblier - Obnoxious Racing Engines

I had never been to the Burley Regatta prior to this past weekend, but this year I was able to combine a trip to dyno a friends Comp Jet engine in nearby Twin Falls, Idaho with the weekend of the famous race.

In order to not have to make the entire drive myself, I needed to be in Blythe, CA by 8AM to meet my ride that was traveling from Yuma. I didn't even know there was a 4:00 in the morning! I made it on time, only to get a call...
  3. Taming The Dragon... A Land Lovers Guide To The LOTO Shootout.

The performance boating community is a mixed bag of personalities, boats, and waterways. Each geographical region of boating holds its legends and lore and boaters from each proudly carry their flag high and tout their home water as the best in the country. Those of us on the west coast are fond of speaking with great fervor about such areas as The Delta, Lake Powell, Lake Havasu, or Parker. To left coasters these aquatic playgrounds represent the epitome of what boating was meant to be....
  4. Extreme Machines at the AVI

    View attachment 598125

Mid last week I was forced with a choice to either go to the Parker Tube Float, or an event that I had just recently heard about The Extreme Machine show at the AVI Casino. It's no secret that I'm a Parker Rat, and we go to the Tube Float every year, but this year with the kids being so young and my wife almost being full term Pregnant I decided to stick with the option where Air Conditioning was close.

I have never been to the AVI before, and I must say I...
  5. Nordic Boats and the Los Angeles BoatShow 2012 Part 1

View attachment 597311 Nordic brought more boats than any of the other Performance Boat manufacturers with a very impressive line up featuring everything from Deck Boats to a 100+mph 39 Vee. The boats themselves will be "lightly" covered in the article, but I figure what better way to start then to just give you the "HIT LIST" of their booth right up front.

    1. Buck's 28SS with a GT 1300 - 148 mph!
    2. Another 28 SS with a Merc 700 - 106 mph!
    3. 39 Vee with Staggered Merc 700's...
  6. Storm Chasers... Fast Boats and Good Company

We are now more than a week removed from what has become the unofficial kick-off of boating season on the west coast and I have had some time to decompress and reflect on the events of the 2014 Desert Storm Poker Run in Lake Havasu, AZ. This year brought with it a slew of changes that some speculated could put a real dent in the image and popularity of this great event. Couple this with the fact that Mother...
  7. Team OutLaw Racing going after Golden Gate to Long Beach Record!

View attachment 597770 Tomorrow Morning Bob Russel and John Rodgers will be attempting to set TWO new World Records! The boat will be leaving at 7:00 am and making it's way south to Marina Del Ray in an attempt to break a record set by Bob Nordskog, Norm Teague and Bob Teague on September 13th 1988! The record currently is 5 hours 57 minutes with an average speed of 76 mph. From Marina Del Rey the 50' OuterLimits cat will continue it's journey to the fantail of the Queen Mary to...
  8. Desert Storm 2014 - Putting the Animal Back in the Cage

I have been reading the forums, and one question that has come up several times is "Why do they do it on this weekend? StageCoach and the bike run are on the same weekend?" To answer that question I want to take you back to a little over a decade ago, when I first attended one of the AZHB Poker Run's called the "Heat Wave." Years before I attended this one I had heard they used to do a "Shotgun" start, meaning everyone would just take off heading down the lake at the same time. The...
  9. 2013 Parker International Water Ski Races

View attachment 597325 I went down to the Parker International Water Ski Races a few weeks back (Mar 9-10), and had an absolute blast! I have been going to water ski races of all sorts for about seven years and it seems with each event there is always a different "vibe." I'm not hardcore enough into the sport to be able to tell you what dictates that "vibe" of each event, or the mood of the racers but from my limited (very limited) knowledge I would have to say that the...
  10. Nordic Christmas Party

View attachment 597166 Got a text from Thane the new GM of Nordic boats Saturday afternoon inviting me to partake in their first annual Christmas party. The text was short and to the point and didn't give a lot of detail or description as to what the game plan was, all that I knew was 5:00 and something about a BBQ. A quick offer to bring something to the Que, and should I bring the wife and kids was sent back. An even shorter and borderline cryptic response "Adults only,...
  11. Needles Hotboat and Custom Car Show - Billy B

This year marks the tenth year of the "Billy B" show in Needles CA. What started off as a yearly Vacation with Billy B and some friends has turned into what is historically one of the coolest boating events on the West Coast.

Over the years this thing has grown to the point of busting at the seams. Last year was undoubtedly the biggest show of all of them. If you didn't arrive early last year and you had a spot in the back to say it was a "task" getting in...
  12. Pit Stops and Parties... It's almost Enduro Time!

Fall brings with it thoughts of colorful turning of the leaves on the trees outside; cool, crisp morning air; smooth, glassy, water on the river; and every chick on Facebook talking about Pumpkin Spice Latte and yoga pants. Of course, in addition to the usual musings of this time of harvest comes to mind one of the best parts about this perennial turning of the seasons... 40 uncorked boats and their equally unhinged pilots decimating the quiet solitude and running wide open...
  13. Needles to Parker. "The Show and Shine Capital of the Southwest"

    View attachment 597666

I've been to four of them so far this year with one more to go at Lake Havasu on November 2. So who doesn't like to look at beautifully restored high performance classics and appreciate the craftsmanship that each so elegantly displays. What I've also noticed is that each Show and Shine, although similar in concept and format, has a little different vibe which makes it just that much more interesting and definitely worth attending.

  14. Against All Odds... The 2013 Bluewater 336 Enduro by Teague Custom Marine

As kids we learn at an early age that humans have a built in desire to compete with one another. We raced our Schwinn Orange Krates, challenged each other to see who could eat a slice of pizza in the least bites, got to the bottom of who could spit water the farthest, and later in life may have bloodied each other up in an attempt to impress the Prom Queen... who, inevitably, paid no attention and left the party with some senior who looked like he should have graduated 4 years...
